American Bandstand 1968 - TOP 10 - Green Tambourine, The Lemon Pipers
Музыка
Airdate: January 13, 1968
Happy New Year…..1968!
It’s the second episode of '68 with musical guest The Box Tops. The Lemon Pipers’ very short, “fast-rising”, one hit is at #9 today on the Billboard Hot 100 and will peak at #1 in 3 weeks.
If they were to play any of the other 9 songs on today’s TOP 10, which one would you vote for? (Tough choice, but I’d like to see them dance to “Bend Me, Shape Me”)
Listening and dancing while they play..play…play…. their green tambourine are: Frank Herrera , Robin Morris (back row bleachers, 0:41) Jeff Stein, Patty Barden (middle row bleachers 0:41), Robin Miller, Pat Dickinson, Mike Langham (front row bleachers 0:41), Famous Hooks & June Strode (0:50), Frank Vanderpuil & Judy Michaud (far left, 1:04), Maureen Cohen (with a rose painted on her forehead at 2:16 ), Rick Bach (2:20), Don Sanuskar (in his new plaid jack dancing next to Maureen at 2:29) and Eddie Sanchez & Ruby Dake dancing on the riser at 1:10.
In the News: Tomorrow, Jan. 14, the Green Bay Packers will play the Oakland Raiders in the 2nd NFL-AFL Championship game - later known at Super Bowl II. The Raiders made it to the championship game with the help of an impressive young linebackers coach named John Madden.
In 2 days, on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. will celebrate his 39th birthday.
Baby, I Love You! - I hate that we lost a couple more 60’s music legends this week - Ronettes lead singer Ronnie Spector and The Platters former lead singer Sonny Turner. (RIP) Sonny was interviewed on a Bandstand Hollywood Hotline segment where the kids danced to “With This Ring”.
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day everyone and thank you for spending a few minutes in 1968 with me. You all pass the telescope test!

Awesome. My father was the Lemon Piper's manager. And he is also the one playing the triangle in the production. Paul Menard aka Irving Harrigan of Charlie and Harrigan. Also, Charlie and Harrigan were inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2014. The memories I have of the Lemon Pipers coming over to the house in Ohio. Amazing!
A memorable song from the 60s from someone who was there. ❤️

I am envious of you. I was technically there..born in 67, but I’ve always loved the music of the 60s, even though my childhood and teenage years were 70s/ 80s. I ADORE Green Tambourine, Incense and Peppermints, The Doors, etc. It all feels very familiar to me somehow. ❤
"Green Tambourine" is a certifiable classic.
This was about the time my older brother (16), older cousin (13), and I (almost 7) short-sheeted my parents' bed, and I remember GT playing on the radio whlle we did it. They were not amused, but we were! 😊

@@cindymacferran331 I really liked "Green Tambourine," so it stayed in my memory! 😊 I was excited to see it included on AB, which I watched faithfully every Saturday, along with Soul Train later on!
I'm one of those heretics who prefers Green Tambourine over most Beatles records. Thanks for the Top Ten! Winter '68 was a tough time nationally, and personally for my family. I'm so grateful for happy music memories.
Awwww this is a great old tune. Definitely dance in front of the TV worthy. Hello to all my Bandstand YT buddies! Hope everyone is well. 💗
The nascent days of 2022 have added a few more musical talents to Rock and Roll heaven. Thank you Aaron for preserving their contributions to music across the spectrum in your library via one upload or another. It’s so great to see YCDTI! back satiating our appreciation of American Bandstand memories. Honorable mentions to @jthyme and Uncle George wherever you are. THANK YOU Aaron.

Dancer Don , Plaid looked nice on you and of course we were all cool if we had plaid on. I on the other hand was short and stocky and looked like a kids toy colored block. That's saying nothing about the pants to boot. I now help my wife get my grand kids plaid. It will not go away.I must be one of the few that STILL hates it.

@@gregmoore7709 Yeah, a plaid Pendleton. A Christmas gift that definitely seemed out of step for the times. Well there’s sure no missing that hot mess on the dance floor. Ha! Made for a nice feast for the moths. LOL
Thanks, Aaron!! Sad to say, a few other passings this week were R. Dean Taylor (Indiana Wants Me), Fred Parris of the Five Satins (In The Still Of The Night), songwriter Dallas Frazier (Mohair Sam, Elvira, Alley Oop, There Goes My Everything, etc) and Rosa Lee Hawkins of the Dixie Cups (Chapel Of Love, Iko Iko)

As well, Sonny Turner from the late ‘60s incarnation of the Platters (With this Ring etc.)
For me it would be “Woman, Woman” by the Union Gap. Anytime I hear something from them it’s like I am automatically transformed back into my wonder years from the middle to late 60s
I liked this song then, I like it now....when you think of all the history being played out in those days with all that great music as the soundtrack...a unique time😎
Love You started out showing Famous Hooks and Judy Strode ❤️‼️ Dancing Don looking Cool as Always at the end. I was 9 then....
Another one of my faves, great dancing, great video. Thank you
I'd argue "Green Tambourine" is one of the 10 best songs of the entire decade of the 60s.

@@LibraLady-hg4pd Marty Fried, the drummer for the Cyrkle, was good friends with my uncle. He passed away last September after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. He was a very kind, intellligent and funny man. He became a very well-known lawyer in greater Detroit and few around him knew that in his youth, he opened for the Beatles.
I always love the music and dancing. But the Neet commercial at the beginning was hilarious 🤣. I showed it to Hubs and he about fell out of his chair. I was 12 in 1968, he was 15. Thanks for sharing nostalgic times!
Interesting to see how they dance to the song

Always love the ending to this tune. Top 40 stations back then would cut the ending to make room for more commercials and DJ babble. Christmas 1967, got my first record player, stereo, no less!

LMAO at that commercial! How did they get away with that?! Aaron, Why did they not play the Beatles "Hello Goodbye" that was number one? Didn't they usually do that? I wonder what made them choose#4? I would have loved to dance to "Bend me Shape Me" ....any way you want me......hahaha!

Hi Peggy! Happy New Year. I hope you are doing well. They are at the end of the show and out of time so I think they played it because it was so short. From what Don says, it sounds like Dick was often pressed for time and always trying to move the show along. It’s a good thing they didn’t play “Hello Goodbye” or I wouldn’t be able to post it as Beatles songs are always blocked. I’d love to see you guys dance to “Bend Me, Shape Me” too. I’m guessing they played that at least a few times here in early ‘68. Good to hear from you.
Wow, I remember all these songs.
Wow! That commercial for Neet was just bizarre, even for the loose 60's. And pretty funny too! I saw the Lemon Pipers perform on a TV show (Not AB) in 1969 and naturally Green Tambourine was the song they played. Its one of those marvelous one hit wonders that just resonated with me then and still does. By the way, was that Maureen Cohen at the end of the clip? Peace to all.

It just occurred to me, how is “any song you want I’ll gladly play” played on a tambourine? Is it like the game “what song is this?”, while you bang on the table and someone guesses? Only took me 50 years to notice this.
Linda canção, gostei.

The youngsters here look totally out of it, and was that blonde girl yawning at the beginning of the song? Maureen looks like she's about to do a Clearasil commercial. I'd like to see these folks dance to "Judy In Disguise" (low energy a must to avoid). And RIP to our lost entertainers, so many of them.
