The capacity of most of old European stadiums was cut down when UEFA reviewed security measures after the Heysel Stadium disaster (It left out English teams to play in Europe for a number of years). Before that, Santiago Bernabeu Stadium (Madrid) had a capacity of 106 thousand and Camp Nou (Barcelona) had a capacity of 120 thousand in 1997.

New stadiums in Europe started getting "capped" at around 60000~65000 due to security regulations. As an example: the old Benfica stadium in Lisbon at one point had a max capacity of more than 120k (the record attendance was between 135k to 140k in a Benfica vs Porto game in 1987), but on its last decade attendance was capped at 78k~80k due to security regulations. The new Benfica stadium (finished in 2003) was built for 65k max to fulfill even newer regulations.

The Camp Nou can fit more than 100,000 people seated, in the video it says 99,000 putting security measures, etc., and now they are expanding it to renovate it and make it even bigger. The next is the Benabéu (Real Madrid) and the third is the Monumental, from River Plate.

I think it was more for safety and also for practicality aswell, because the issue of the stadium collapses in the 80s that mutliple teams suffered. Also a lot of this huge stadiums used to make the whole citys come to a standstill because of the massive amount of people trying to get to a very limited space and than also leave it.

Old Wembley in London, which was in use from 1923 to 2000, had a capacity of 127.000. The first event held at the stadium was the 1923 FA Cup Final on 28 April between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United. Such was the eagerness to attend the final at the new national stadium that vast numbers of people crammed through the 104 turnstiles into the stadium, far exceeding its official 127,000 capacity. The crowds overflowed onto the pitch as there was no room on the terraces. Estimates of the number of fans in attendance range from 240,000 to well over 300,000.

These capacity figures trip me out. I used to live in an area that had a population of 400, spread over hundreds of square kilometres. I returned to live in a city for a while and went to a large shopping centre. I came to the realisation that there were more people shopping in that centre on that day than there were people where I used to live. Even if you took in the closest town (75km away), Cooktown, with a population of around 2500, there are more people living in a smaller area just down the road from where I currently live. I really miss my isolation.

In order to compare stadiums properly, you need to take into account whether the audience is partially standing or not. Otherwise the stats are not accurate. Some of the European Stadiums mentioned in the video used to have bigger capacities in the past and had it decreased because they turned into all-seated stadiums. Maracaná used to reach 200k-ish capacity and now is only 80k. Michigan is an interesting middleground as people don't sit on actual seats but on benches so more people fit into a smaller space. As far as i know Camp Nou is an all seated stadium with actual seats which makes its capacity even more remarkable.

What used to be and what is now are two entirely different realities. There is also a difference between capacity and seating capacity. Per Wiki, the largest capacity associated football stadium in the world was Maracanã Stadium in Rio which hosted the final World Cup in 1950 with 199,000 official attendees. At the time of the World Cup, the stadium was mostly grandstands with no individual seats. Today after the latest renovations it’s seating capacity and maximum capacity is 78,838. Yes, more than 100,000 less. Almost all American football stadiums state seating capacity. So the University of Michigan’s seating capacity is 107,601 has almost 30,000 more seats than Rio’s.

You won’t find any soccer stadiums bigger than Michigan. It’s about the 3rd largest stadium of any kind in the world, edged out only by one in North Korea, presumably for loony displays of devotion to the Kim family, and a cricket stadium in India. Because it’s probably not that hard to get like 125,000 plus people to go to a cricket match in India.

But a lot of towns and cities have at least two teams and therefore 2 stadiums. We don't share stadiums across here. In Scotland if you look at Glasgow it has Celtic Park, Ibrox plus the national stadium of Hampden, it also has many stadiums close in proximity to the city of Glasgow. London has stadiums all over it. You were looking at Michigan which I would assume is a state stadium. London has Wembley, but it also has stadiums for Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham, Fulham Charlton, Crystal Palace and Leighton Orient and these are just the ones I can remeber. Birmingham is similair with clubs in and around the area of the city. Also our stadiums were bigger before but for safety they were cut down in size because you could no longer stand and they all had to be seated. In Europe and especially in the UK, a lot of football stadiums are in residential areas. There are houses and shops etc very close by or in many cases right next to.
