America’s Wild Horses Are Under Threat | NBC Left Field

A federal law protects tens of thousands of wild horses across millions of acres in America’s West. But with their numbers now skyrocketing, the Trump administration wants to make selling them for slaughter legal again, and the future of these icons of America’s West is hanging in the balance.

Colorado has already disseminated their wild horse areas to a token few areas such as what was highlighted in this story. Only 2.7% of all American ranchers have Federal land permits and even smaller fraction of that number on wild horse dedicated areas. The ranchers in this story struggling to get by are not the typical ranchers on Horse areas. Eg. Three horse areas in Oregon (1.7 million acres) have one permittee that has 97% of the allocation of forage to 3 % for the horses. Same in WY three horse areas with 1.4 million acres and the so called rancher who with their billions of dollars got a consent decree from the local court (judge is a ranchers wife) to completely have the horses in their area Zeroed out within 10 years or by 2024. Remember Wild Horses were given this land by law and for their "principal use". The story is more than what they say. The stories facts have been shown to be inconsistent and exaggerated. The livestock minded, (all animals are for $$) are salivating at the Stewarts amendment to release our wild horses for sale emass. They are rounding them up in record numbers even when they say they have to many in holding with the lie of overpopulation. This Excess song was written and directed by the billion dollar meat industry and they are afraid of the truth.

I do not understand why they would want to rid themselves of these animals while people pay a ton for thoroughbreds. The people buying horses should take the foals and also ones that can be broken. I think all horses can be broken. American Indians did this all the time. Furthermore even a thoroughbred needs to be broken to ride. Horses are a very smart animal and ultimately loves the socialization in the end of being broken and ridden. They love human interaction. When I was a boy a freaking deer followed deer followed me home for some reason and just would not go away. I went inside the house and when I came out a few hours later the freaking deer was standing at the front door on the lawn where I left him. This was confusing. I literally had to yell "go away!!!" So if a deer wanted to be friends for some bizarre reason I'm quite sure we could circulate the beautiful horses into the public quite easily and offer protection of a beautiful animal. Eventually I learned (when my father returned that the deer was young and likely lost his mom. So he imprinted on me immediately when he saw I was no threat and was nice to him. Once I patted his head that was it. Game on.

Of the few family ranchers left that share fed. land leases on a horse herd area called HMA could be contracted to watch over the herds. Much cheaper than rounding them up and stressing them out. (also the stress taking them does on the public). They could take data on the horses self regulation according to habitat conditions of each year. Even help with dna collection, how the horse interacts with other species etc.

I am not understanding why these ranchers can't round up stray horses and sell them for human consumption? the French, Italians, Canadians and many more cultures eat horses, I've never tried it, but I would. I grew up during the Quarter horse boom of the 70s and 80s; later on I went to Italy and France with the US Army, they eat horses without blinking an eye. I personally don't see anything wrong with it; it's about perception. Prior to horses and mules being utilized as "beast of burdens" cattle were used in the US and else where; there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating horses.

The horses aren't native to the land and struggled to survive here anyway, but the BLM has always been the horses worst enemy. They need to leave things alone and let nature take care of the horse population. The last thing they need is more money.

Horses are Native, they have been in America 100's, 1000's even millions of years. Elk only 14,000, Bison only 130,000 (both evolved in Northern China Russia) and Man must of followed them across the land bridge also only 14,000 years ago. I do agree leave them alone and let nature take care of them as long as their land resources given them by us by law are not hoarded by the other interests on their land.

There is no such thing as a North American "wild horse". The horse went extinct in the Americas around 10,000 years ago. Their descendants, which had crossed the Bering land bridge, spread out over Asia, were captured and domesticated, and selectively bred for desired traits. These altered breeds were then introduced by the Europeans, after native wildlife and plants had adapted to their absence, and became an invasive species wreaking havoc on the native habitats. These feral mongrels no more resemble the original North American wild horse than dogs resemble wolves. I'm fairly certain no would want to see packs of feral dogs roaming the countryside so why are these pests any different?

Wild life is controlled by a balance of both herbivores and carnivores .... humans need to introduce the balance of both to control the wild horse population. Although sterilization of horses is a good idea to control population without introducing compatible carnivores (wolves, bears and cougars) to help control the species.

Sophie Xo I don’t think they’re targeting all of them. To get rid of them all like that they’d have to sterilize every mare out there every single year until the very last one is too old to breed, which I doubt they could ever do even if they wanted to. The goal is to simply decrease their numbers, since they are way overpopulated now, and that’s all this will do.

To everyone watching this saying the horses are native to the lands. Wrong. They are not native. They were brought over 500 years ago by the Spanish and bred with the ranchers horses that were turned out. The horses ARE over populated. I’ve seen it myself. Let me tell you, dying of starvation is much worse than them being taken in by the BLM. You really want to do something? Stop breeding pure bred horses and go adopt a mustang. They can do everything the show ponies can do and sometimes even better!!

  • @jackmorgan1677

Laura, adopting these horses is also not a solution. To keep horses you need to know so much about horses and the way they think, you need to be an expert. Most of us are not like that so we can't keep these animals. The horse experts amongst the population are only a tiny minority...
