Hey Mike, could you do a review of Trackcomp by DMG? Its got the best modelled vintage comps packed into 1 plugin with extra features, very underrated

Great video, Mike! I'm a fan of the AMEK 200 and how transparent it is. Mastering EQ is a tricky skill and these EQs help keep it simple.

Great video. As well as the obvious differences I thought the transients sounded snappier and more aggressive on the 250. I can't say for sure whether or not I imagined that. 😆

  • @paulcanz

The 250 sounds a little more aggressive to me , I own the 200 Already and the Soma EQ so I was curious about the difference bc you know we can overdo with buying plugins we might not ever use or making one obsolete that we already own . So this was helpful

I did a massive shoot out with this EQ alongside every other major analogue EQ emus (It took days): all the PA EQs, Acoustica Aquas (All of them!), UAD (7), DMG and others. The EQ that won was a digital one. The actual code from Skywalker Ranch's AMS-Neve first digital desk from it's CS.. UAD's AMS-Neve CS is the exact same code as that desk, and it sounds amazing, with an analogue feel (Weirdly) and was Neve's first digital console design. After that, I think Acoustica's Opal came next (Huge CPU use, largest of any plugin I own). Even UAD's emulations of the Massive Passive and Curve Bender sounded flat like this Amek, which broke up into aliasing if pushed. I have the PA Neve EQ (Their one in the series before this) and they are fine for making small changes with a tiny bit of texture. But it's nothing compared to professional EQs you can rent using Access Analog. So, might as well use good digital EQ like FabFilter or stock, then add a saturator like Spectre, Saturn 2 or even True Iron. Or try some of the Acoustica Aquas like Opal, Diamond EQ and Jade 2 (But all in a 96khz sessions though, the difference in 44.1/48 is really obvious).

Just a FYI something you may have forgotten in your "digital EQ recommendation" like a ginormous hard drive and a unreasonably expensive CPU. At 96K samples, a Nyquist wall set at 44.1K or 48K is the least of your problems.

@@stallmak8 To get the UAD AMS-NEVE CS,, you can just get a UAD Arrow and buy the plugin. Admittedly, you'd only get a few instances. I have 10 UAD cores so I can use it more, but I'm actually using it in stem mastering (4 instances). If I mixed with it (With it's horrific UI), and used it on tracks, group tracks and bus tracks in the mix? My mixes would be sooo much better. But I need the UAD processing for other things in that stage. That said, now I can use UADx, which just went M1 Native a few wees ago! Maybe I will use it more in the mix. What sucks so hard about UAD plugs? They don't update them except tiny changes. Even after 8 years. Scandalous.

Ahhhhh audio snobs. Gotta love them. Always one guy in the room who has to say everything sounds like trash outside of a few very specific selections when in reality 99.99% of people won’t even hear a difference

For those wondering about use scenarios between the two: I would use the 250 on rock and pop, and I would use the 200 on jazz and orchestral music. Also, on a light gentle song with just a soft singer and an acoustic guitar I would again reach for the 200. Hope this helps.

I already have the AMEK EQ 200 and on first listen I was slightly preferring the 250 until I realised some of the frequencies on the 250 don't match up. i.e. 600Hz is actually around 820Hz. To get 600Hz on the 250 you need to use a 480Hz setting. So the 620Hz shelf cut here on the 250 is actually a much longer shelf than 620Hz on the 200 which will give quite a different sound. When I matched the two purely by ear I was happy enough to just stick with the 200 as the difference to me didn't justify owning both. They are both great sounding EQs though and you won't have to deliberate too much about which to get if you compare how they sound using a curve analyzer to set them identically.

I watch all your videos and respect your opinion. I’m a bit stumped with this one though. Some other (respected) reviewers have suggested ‘snake oil’ regarding the differences between this and the AMEK 200. Any thoughts? I prefer it cuz it’s easier to see, 😂!

You can currently get the EQ 250 for $29.99 inc VAT in UK. Is this a tacit admission that the product has confused the market (in particular, EQ 200 owners) as it is apparently so similar in what it offers (at least one expert review says similarly). Even at the sale price, I think I'll pass as there's a point where you should just be using your ears to get the sound you are after and too many plugins to deal with can just make that search harder. I already have EQ 200 and love it btw :-)

  • @Fwuzeem

I'll be honest and say that I can't hear the difference, although there might be a bit more smoothness to the 250.
