AMAZON Returns MYSTERY Box from eBay??? Can I FIX it?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi, in this video I bought an Amazon Returns Box from eBay!
So what will be inside, I'm thinking complete and utter junk, but will I be proved wrong. Will anything be fixable or will it all be broken beyond repair.
Let's find out.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

The reason the battery pack didn't originally come on when you bent the tag down (and also after the repair) until after you'd supplied external power is a good sign that the charge controller is behaving correctly! When the battery was disconnected, the charge controller saw the 0v and put itself into undervoltage protection mode before it's power failed (there's probably a capacitor that held enough charge to allow this). It's then isolated from drawing power from the battery so as to avoid the fire risk of draining it too low. As soon as you supplied external power, it could safely power itself and check on the current battery state, saw the battery was at a safe voltage and switched into the normal charge cycle.

A lot of returns arent faulty, they can just be because they changed thier mind, or ordered the wronf thing but returned it as 'damaged' as this is a way to get it returned postage-free, otherwise you have to pay the return postage. Or another reason it might be just damaged oackaging ibstead of the actual items. But a lot of items not might have anything wrong at all. Be careful when ordering any Mystery Boxes from unscrupulous sellers as they are already been compiled / re-sold by people who dont want the rest of the stuff

Turned out to not be a bad little lot, and I'd love to see the rest of the items reviewed/assessed/repaired! I also kinda knew that most of the batteries would be good as well. Most people just tend to select damaged as the reason for return just so they can get free return shipping (at the sellers' expense!). The seller then can't resell the item as brand new (if at all).

I've done quite a number of headphones' jacks repairs since my school days and currently trust epoxy more than hot glue. Because hot glue softens over time, being in contact with oils and other chemicals from skin. And, anyway, it's not really strong for holding those tiny wires. And there's a way to restore mechanical strength, at least, taking some load away from the wires themselves by means of a thread. Can run it few times, wrapping around the cable and the connector or even connecting it to the reinforcing thread of the cable if there is one. Also thread can be used as a part of new outer shell, that can be quite nice of done carefully. Just put threads close to each other over the repaired area and bind it with a glue of your choice. Mostly I've used PVA (wood glue) as it's easy to use and flexible when dry, but epoxy or even CA can be used as well.

I'll sometimes use a piece of heatshrink that's too narrow to go over the connector and stretch it out with long-nosed pliers. Have to be careful as it can rip easily. Then it will fit over the connector, and shrink down small enough to fit the cable when you apply heat. That way you get a neat heatshrink covering on both the connector and cable. Another great video, good work!!!

Hi Vince... a simple bit of test gear can find 'motorboating' faults as per your mini Bush record player: a hi Z in AC coupled signal tracer. Instead of tracing audio signals, you 'listen' to the power supply where it feeds the audio amplifier. Any ripple (as caused by a 10nF cap rather than a 100nF) is immediately obvious - it's 'noise' on the power rails. If you've a 'scope you'll see a typical 'pop-pop-pop' triangular wave on the DC power rail(s). Job done!

Vince the reason disposable batteries are 1.7v is to compensate for voltage drop in the appliance

Not bad at all! Gone all the way through town with those spot welds, the other, untouched end would fail instead! (Curious about how cheap the welder is, will be needing one for my battery pack) It is normal for non rechargeable AA, AAA cells to show 1.7 volts when fresh - that's how they are said to last X years in storage, once the voltage drops down to 1.5 volts it would have been that old (nearing expiry or otherwise expired, always check with a multimeter because there will be some stronger cells than others!) Is that Energizer charger the CHPRO? Pretty good unit. Maybe on the next mystery box you'll get a BQ-CC55 if the win streak goes through!

I've seen a bunch of things returned to Amazon like brand new Kindle Fire , garmin forerunner smart watch , hamecs , blankets, etcetera some brand new never opened some stuff slightly used but for the most part everything worked or was in excellent condition but was missing chargers , covers/cases , etcetera the Kindle Fire was brand new never opened its a gamble what you will find though

I’m curious if the batteries are faulty because they don’t provide the correct power output or rated mAh. I’m not sure about load testing batteries but I had purchased some AA batteries on Amazon that measured around 1.6 volts but when put under load they dropped sharply and I actually had one explode. I was using them in an Estes model rocket ignition system and couldn’t get the igniters to glow and set off the rocket engines. During changing of batteries and checking voltages for faults, I had one battery explode. It wasn’t until switching to another batch of batteries that I purchased locally that the igniters and rockets engines started functioning correctly.

IPA for glued in batteries. I've done a few powerbanks without damage this way.

It is possible to slide the white outer shell off the earbuds connector (away from the connector towards the earbuds). Then the cable could have een repaired and the shell slid back on and glued down.. Edit: well after locking at the video I think my cable probably was a 3rd party cable..

Thanks JCreazy. I did buy a 2nd box from the same seller a few days ago so there will be at least one more video 👍👍 Who knows, if the 2nd video does well maybe I can try and buy more from other sources. Personally I love the idea of not knowing what is inside 😎

With the power bank, why not pick up one of those guitar pedal alloy cases and transfer all the doings into that and you can dremel out a window for the meter and socketry giving you a fairly robust power bank? You could even wire in one of those voltmeters that show draw etc and even a couple quid from Aliexpress one of those step up/step down variable voltage circuit boards giving you a decent 12v output that you can control. I wired one of those into my emerging ATX psu kit, I bought for £1.40 a kit from Ali, you plug the 24 pin into it giving you 2x 12v with terminals and 1 5v and 1 3.3v, I wired in a 12v into this variable step up/down board and I get now a variable .5v to 12v to a set of terminals and the thing has cost me an old ATX power supply, few pounds in Aliexpress kits and about 10 minutes work :)
