The American version of the show has the same attitude. It's just how the show is. Edit: Now that I watched the video, the British version is way more savage than the US version... the US version has some jokes at the expense of the contestants, but there's an audience and a laugh track... but the British version's "jokes" don't feel like jokes they just feel like insults, and the contestants don't seem bothered by the host's incredibly passive aggressiveness. What a strange show.

Actually, that's not true. From what I can find on the Internet, the position is responsible (among other things) for arranging the procurement, processing and delivery of legal documents, keeping a "communications line" (so to speak) open w/ the customer, planning meetings and trips, auditing accounts, and reporting on possible process and efficiency improvements, as well as delivering periodic (typically yearly or quarterly) reports to customers. I'd say that's *quite a bit more* than standing at a desk.

What I really appreciate about the British version of this show, is how civil and collected they are - both throughout the show, and when voted out. On the American version, they often express desires for others' loss, try to look for others' faults and generally look outside themselves - but in the British version they more often seem to focus on themselves and their own faults, as the reason for being voted off. Not always, but notably more often. I also like how the show isn't dumbed down, and yet everyone can follow. I suppose I can chalk that up to a cultural difference there... The banter with the host(ess) is also markedly more witty, more rapid-fire too - all in all, more interesting. And here's something I really get to enjoy this time around: Anne Robinson seems to react much more warmly and with more interest (and less animosity, too) to contestants that seem to know their trivia. I think that, from time to time, she gets to be something more than just the cruel mistress of the ceremony, and she seems to enjoy that quite a bit - that's enjoyable to watch.
