I've used that type of rubber and hot plates to fix tubes when I was younger. It's called vulcanization and works well.

When and where life is cheap and nobody cares one wit about safety. The attitude is, so what if the tire explodes in a few days and kills someone. Just shrug it off.

I have done some very strange repairs in the Alaska to get my truck out off the bush. You just have to think ahead and bring the stuff you need to fix stuff.

They will work perfectly fine it's not a sidewall they filled it in with rubber and they used heat to vulcanize it that is exactly how they would repurpose one in America.
