AMAZING Steering Wheel Transformation with Micro-Suede Rewrap | Install & Review

Фильм және анимация

This leather steering wheel from a Lancer Evolution 9 had seen better days and was due for leather repair OR a rewrap cover. I found an affordable Japanese Suede steering wheel wrap with red stitching and decided to transform this wheel myself!
This wheel was an EXTRA Evo 9 wheel I had laying around that I had been itching to repair due to the damage on the leather. It would have cost hundreds to restitch the leather from scratch and preferred to attempt the DIY rewrap method and show you how to install it. Auto Interior Technic makes an awesome steering wheel kit (and full interior kit) for the Evo 8 and Evo 9. For less than $100 I was able to get the Japanese Suede wheel kit with the red stitching and red center stripe. I have NEVER sewn anything in my life, so his was truly a DIY first attempt. And if I can do this, you can do this. You can choose between Suede or Alcantara, with plenty of stitching color options!
Auto Interior Technic makes steering wheel rewraps for Audi, BMW, Honda, Subaru, and a few others, so this isn't limited to just the Evo. They have some awesome wraps for WRX STI's, S2000's, BRZ, FRS, etc. As a note, you DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHEEL. It does make it a little easier, but is not necessary. I just happened to have an extra wheel to work on.

I think what I'd do is divide the larger section into two and the red middle marker. End one half there and start the other half there. Easier than dealing with yards of thread - which is when I tend to mess up sewing projects - thy end up as thread bird's nest... The steering wheel looks great btw.

Did you have any small gaps where the material didn't reach each other to essentially close? I have some gaps around the steering wheel clips, I think my material was just a tad too short to make it look sealed. I did my best with the thread to to close it and cover it.

I ordered a leather one from Wheelskins for my F150 (weird how I ended up here, right? Lol) and the first time was a little screwy. It isn't as factory looking as this one, but it's a nice alternative to the $10 Wal-Mart ones. Lol. Doing that sewing takes a lot of patience for sure for it to come out right. You did good though, looks clean and like something you'd see on high end cars.

I have a cheap wrap on my Ford Fiesta made from a micro suede type material and it’s been great for the 2-3 months I’ve had it on so far, it bobbles up a little in the first few weeks but it smooths out again pretty quick, I love the material but my biggest issue with my own wrap is that I didn’t use any double sided tape so it does move very slightly although it’s not noticeable when driving. Much better than the 16 year old leather it’s covering regardless 👌🏻

Great job, I'd never have the patience. The oem cover looks like it could just have been coated, the leather didn't look worn. My wrx wheel looks crappy up top, the black coating over the leather is a little different than yours. Sucks because the rest of the wheel is great. Will probably pay someone to rewrap mine, so I won't notice the mistakes I'd make.
