AMAZING RESTORATION of Vintage Cedar Chest- Relaxing Furniture Restoration Video

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I purchased this cedar chest from Facebook Marketplace. The seller said it had been stored at her parents farm for over 20 years. It was a mess! And it smelled pretty bad! The finish on the top was pretty much destroyed. The chest sat in water at one point and the particle board between the veneer on the base became swollen and started to flake off. This chest presented quite a few problems that I had to deal with if I was to restore it to it's previous state.
Apparently, the prior owner had no key so they forced it open and tore the lock from the wood. (Did they find a treasure inside?) Of course, I did not realize this until I got it back to my shop and realized the lock was useless and I had not key! I realized that I unless I could find a key and repair the damage done by their action, the value of the piece would be dramatically reduced.
I used Odie's oil as a sealer on this chest. I think it really enhanced the beauty of the pecan wood. Watch the video to see how I was able to restore this little chest and resolve the lock issue so I am now able to sell it for a nice profit.
This entire video has no spoken words- only shops sounds.

My grandfather worked for the Lane company in Rocky Mount, VA. In the 1960’s to 70’s. I still store things in my Lane cedar chest that was a Christmas present in 1979 and I use the miniature chest given to me at graduation! Thanks for all your hard work preserving this chest.

I just pulled out my Lane cedar chest I’d gotten in 1969. The outside needs cleaning and painting but interior of mine is also pristine. Will be tackling it soon as my studio is completed end of the month. Thanks for inspiring 💕

To replace it with oak would have cost over $250. Oak is very expensive. I would not have made any profit on this chest if I replaced it with oak. I was able to repair it very inexpensively. I have no doubt the repair will last for a long time.

This video is unique. Repairs are a usual step in a restoration, but this is the first time I've seen reconstruction be part of one. I was really anxious to see how you were going to replace the destroyed base. It never occurred to me you would rebuild it. Bravo for a job well and beautifully done!

Beautiful restoration. I have a Lane cedar chest I tried as a graduation gift in 1966. It's still in pretty good condition as side from one water mark. I put it on wheels because at my age moving furniture has to be easy. I'm planning on refinishing the top to fix the water stain. It's a very pretty piece and still modern. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Love your videos.

It looks as good as the day it was made except for a water mark on the top. I don't think there is a great demand for hope chests anymore. Great for storing blankets and linens though, (or so I am told).

I agree with one of the reviewers. I would have replaced the particle board with wood or cut the wet areas. Also the finish is too yellow. But you did a great job in your finish. Glad it was saved

Thank you for the no music. For spreading the paint remover there are finned aluminum rollers or roller covers that might give you more even coverage and avoid over and under application. The finned rollers are used normally in composite work to press out air bubbles from fiberglass epoxy stacks.

You did a wonderful job restoring this cedar chest, it looks great! Lane has always made beautiful cedar chests. I have my mothers cedar chest, its at least 52 years old, possibly older. Its a very dark wood, but its dried finish and slight damage (more like wear and tear) need to be restored. I hope to get motivated to do it, by watching your videos!

@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I mis-typed the age of the cedar chest, its 72-73 yrs old! My parents married in 1950 but I dont know if my mom had it before her marriage. For many, many years, the Lane Co. who makes my moms chest, and yours, would give to all graduating girls the all Dallas, Texas high schools a certificate for a free mini, locking cedar chest when you went into the store that sold the full size Lane chests. My mom graduated in 1947 and I graduated in 1972 and we both got the free mini chests and she later purchased a full size chest, or her parents purchased it for her, I dont know which. Now I have the full size chest and my moms mini chest. I gave my mini chest to my daughter. We didnt live in Dallas when she graduated but I dont know if they still give mini chests to graduating senior girls. Its a nice tradition though.

Lane recalled millions of chests for safety reasons. They replaced my lock also. I dont recall the year they recalled. My chest was 1952. Took about two months to get it. I think the recall went up to 1987.

You are right Paula. It was 1987. They recalled the locks and provide free replacement locks. I was up a creek until I found that out. This chest was so old that I doubt I could have found a key for it. The final pics on the video show it with the old lock in place. I have to wait for the new lock to come in to list it for sale. Thanks for watching!

In the '50's and 60's Lane gave a coupon to each graduating female for a hope chest. It was a small sample of the large one like this. I have collected these small cedar chest/hope chests for years. So I have a small one like this large one in my collection.
