AMAZING RESTORATION of Mid-Century Modern Dresser. Shocking Results!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have never had to do so much repair to restore a piece of furniture! I was challenged at every step. I think the final results will amaze you!
This dresser had been repainted twice before so it had multiple coats of paint on top of the original finish. I will be posting a video showing a comparison of the 3 strippers I used on this dresser: Kwik Strip, CitriStrip and Watco. I was very surprised at the results I obtained when I tested these 3 strippers. Watch the video to see for yourself how they performed when applied side by side on this dresser top.
The link to that video is below:

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included kzread.infoUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

Wow! This is wonderful! I love the way it turned out. One of the things I like about your projects is that you find common sense solutions to achieve the same result that others would spend a bunch of money buying specialized tools for. You are a very practical person who continues to find practical approaches to problems you encounter along the way. Love your work and your very instructive videos.

Hi Mary Kay- I am so glad you get me! I try to show you how to restore furniture without having to buy all kinds of expensive tools and supplies. I use plain old screw drivers not electric screw drivers (even tho I have one) because some people are intimidated by power tools! So glad you like my work!

THIS PROJECT OF YOURS BROUGHT UP A LOT OF MEMORIES FOR ME REGARDING ONE PIECE I DID. I BOUGHT A LINGERAE CHEST THAT I WAS PLANNING ON USING FOR EXTRA DRAWERS IN MY KITCHEN. I HAD TO MAKE A LOT OF REPAIR TO MAKE IT STURDY AGAIN AND EVEN HAD TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT TO COVERUP THE CHEWED UP BOTTOM ON THE SIDES. IT ENDED UP BEING MORE THAN PRESENTABLE ENOUGH TO HAVE IN MY KITCHEN SO AT LEAST I WAS ABLE TO USE IT WITHOUT IT FALLING APART. I PAINTED THE WHOLE WHOLE THING IN AN IVORY COLORED PAINT. KC OF COURSE I KEPT THINGS I NEEDED FOR FUTURE PROJECTS IN ONE OF THE DRAWERS WHICH THE GOOFY EX AND HIS SON MADE SURE THEY STOLE EVERYTHING I HAD IN THE DRAWERS. MY TAPE MEASURES DISAPPEARED ONE AFTER ANOTHER AND I WAS ALWAYS EXPECTED TO HAVE ONE IN MY DRAWER FOR THEM TO STEAL. IF THEY COULDN'T FIND THE TAPE MEASURES THEY STOLE - THEY WOULD ASK IF I KNEW WHERE A TAPE MEASURE WAS. I HAVE MY OWN PLACE NOW AND ANOTHER LINGERAE CHEST. THERE IS NOT ANY WOOD VENEER ON IT SO PAINT IS WHAT I WILL END UP USING. I NO LONGER HAVE THE TWO USEFUL IDIOTS AROUND SO NOTHING I PUT IN THE DRAWERS WILL BE STOLEN. YEA! WIN, WIN!

Hi Brenda. I sure would not refinish an ugly duckling and plan to make money on it! This one was a lot of work and I will be lucky to get $350 for it in my market. I bought it to product a video to show you some new techniques. Please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing!!

How veneers are applied has a lot to do with how long they last. The oldest ones were applied with hide glue and there's lots of examples of those still going strong hundreds of years later. Get yourself an edge trimmer to trim the veneer to an exact fit. They're not expensive and work like magic to give your veneer a perfect fit. Hide glue isn't expensive either but you need a heated glue pot. Pro tip is put water in the glue pot and glue in an old jar. Set the jar in the water. Keeps your pot clean and if it gets funky just get another jar. Mix up some more glue and you're back in business again.

This is the best demonstration video on furniture treatment that I've seen. Well done. Lovely, sleek finish. I'm not so sure I would have bothered with something needing that much repair. I would have drawn the line at a quarter of the gluing. I didn't know you could buy ready to stick veneer either. Very useful.

Hi Michelle, as I said in the video, I would never have taken this on as a project except for the fac that I planned to enter in the ugly duckling challenge. If you want to make money flipping furniture it should be in good shape when you buy it so you need only refinish it. The repairs and stripping take a LOT of time and time is money! The stick veneer was a breeze and it certainly was easy. Thanks for watching. Please give it a thumbs up to help my channel grow.

WOW What a pain but so well worth it. I am an old man and have been doing this with my dad since age 10. I can go on endlessly about how you did things here that most people do not, but just good practice. One example, you put lacquer over the metal painted pulls. Another is that you neutralized your bleach with vinegar, another thing I consider essential. In short you do excellent work. However may I point out 2 things? See the finished dresser's grid lines should look like individual drawers? Easy fix is to use a black crayola crayon inside that groove or a china marker, or even a sharpie. I will sharpen it up, since some are dark and some are not. I do not know why, but most people use stain right out of the can. I always thin mine out because you can always add more coats. OR you might not like the color, you can then switch to another color of stain if it looks too red or too yellow. Also, a thinned stain gives you more working time so you are not all rushed; you have more control. You can also add additional coats to certain parts that are not taking the stain as much as other parts within the same piece of furniture. Golly, this is a beautiful piece. 😍 It is a shame I just discovered you, you have a lot of common sense and understand it all. It is crazy how they market wonder products at a high cost when all it is is bee's wax and mineral spirits, etc. Thank you.

May I make a suggestion. I notice you use a scraper to clean the indentations on the drawer. A hard bristle toothbrush or a soft small brass brush works better and cheap enough to throw away when used up. Actually any small brush with stiff bristles works well. I've used this trick for about 40 years now. Thanks. Also I would like to see some faux finishes in use. A lot of the furniture in the Versailles palace were done this way - to resemble marble, malachite, etc. Doing a dresser or cabinet with a faux marble top or tortoise shell finish or something would be very interesting I believe!! Thanks. Have fun if you decide to experiment a little.

Hi Phillip. Thanks for the tip. I actually has a tooth brush on the table with me--- should have used it! I always experiment so who knows, I may do a tortoise shell finish on a dresser or drawers some day! Thanks for watching!

Gorgeous! Thank you for not painting more than you had to. Good job on those scrapes. I've also seen someone use a soldering iron on a gouge, and a wet towel. Oxalic acid also works for bleaching wood. I feel your pain on the stripper, and like to use my heat gun, as multiple coats of paint seem to take no longer than just one.
