Amazing RC Airplane review GONE WRONG - Avios C-130 V2

Ғылым және технология

RC Cargo planes are some of the most fun you can have in the radio controlled hobby. The Avios C-130 V2 from Hobbyking had so much potential and I was really enjoying its scale flight characteristcs. It flew almost exactly like the real one does. Unfortunate events led to my review getting cut short, but for the time I had it in the air... it truly was all smiles.

    Very good attitude about the crash, Nothing except throttle back may have saved it. No way to see the prop spin off and the resulting power indifference for sure was all bad. I own a HK C-130V2 and love it with out a gyro, I have 28 flights and have had no issues, I will take your advice and recheck my propellers but I did use lock tight and did not over tighten my screws. I also do a good preflight check before every flight to ensure every plane is right since my D-18 mishap of not checking the CG. I will not get in a hurry to fly for no one,

  • @tomhuntFPV

    Good advice Jay! All I would add is that you know you've overtightened the prop screw when the spinner does not run true. If it wobbles, back off the screw until it runs true. I would also recommend a little foam tac glue on the threads to avoid any loosening!

    @incubrian

    these arent like usual spinners. these are molded into the prop itself as a one piece unit, so it will always "look" true. if you overtighten them you will actually deform the plastic (or whatever polymer they used to cast these) and the bolt will crush thru the seat, as well as deform the inner structure as jay pointed out in the vid. in my c130 the stock props had plastic that didnt seem fully cured or was too thin and even slight tightening (to what is "normal" RC torque) crushed the material to where it would not work anymore. so hobbyking sent me a new set of props from the v1 c130 which seemed to have stronger and thicker spinners. again, snug is all these need, any amount of "TIGHT" will completely destroy the material, crush the seat for the bolt head, and cause deformation inside.

    Yes, I know the configuration of the props. I have one of the early ones. I actually did the analysis on the failures exhibited on this first batch for hobby king and made the recommendations not to overtighten. I experimented with my own model and found that overtightening DOES have thr visual clue of making the tip of the spinner wobble.... yes, the whole prop probably does, but it is easy to see it in the spinner.

    Good to hear you be honest about the building error and the pilot error. Very challenging to do everything correctly for an engine out situation with multi engine craft . Very common with gas surprise with electric.

    dude! i think i remember watching your video when i was doing youtube research to see if i wanted to buy this plane or not, and you were flying on a snowy street. so i probably have you to thank for one of my fav models i have ever owned and flown. it has easily been one of my goto models over the last year or two, and i cannot say enough good things about how nicely it flies! i am super into flying this like a scale c130, and it often looks like the real thing, going at real speeds. i wanted to thank you for that, but also for how cool, honest, and forthright you were in this vid. unlike so many youtube content creators that would get emotional and blame things, you just admitted the 2 faults, and accurately diagnosed the prop explosion. i wanted to also add credence to your NTSB report haha, because when my c130 v2 showed up from HK, all 4 prop/spinners had appeared to have slight "melting" where the spinners all looked slightly deformed. This was made worse when i installed one and the bolt went right thru the spinner with very low torque. then when the prop fell off and hit the shop floor, the spinner broke into tons of pieces- very weird for plastics... so either these materials were just a weird polymer, or had an issue in making them. thankfully i sent pics to hobbyking and they were super pro about it and mailed me 4 new props but from the v1 c130, so my coast guard plane has gray propellers rather than these cool scale multicolor ones. but maybe the gray ones are more simple and thicker. i noticed that when installing the gray ones, there was no deformation, but even still i only snugged the props on rather than using "torque" like a typical RC prop install. i would not be surprised if this may have contributed, so it was great detective work on your end to find the cause being both assembly error of overtightening the bolt (i can vouch for that) and also pilot error. i think most pilots out there myself included, would have had the same death spiral as you, because no one can tell they lost a tiny engine that far away, and by the time you might even think about adverse yaw, its too late to glide it in power off. you ought to remove the other 3 props and just look inside the spinners as well as where the bolt seats and see if you also see any deformation of that spinner material. not saying you should blame HK for that, but just in terms of understanding what went wrong and how to avoid future crashes. my c130 has been flying amazing and i'll be checking the props and spinners before going out this 2024 season. thanks for your video, RC always needs more guys like you!

    Hey, thanks for taking the time to write this comment. Feels good knowing people appreciate what we put out there especially when calling our own faults. Glad yours is flying okay. And I can't vouch for the grey props but it may actually look more realistic with those in the air! Hopefully you continue to enjoy the model! This comment alone is making me consider another one. 🔥

    I meant to comment earlier, but better late than never. I found out very early on with my version 1 and the upgraded version 1 that it will approach stall (tip stall) dropping the wing very quickly if allowed to get to slow with flaps and gear down in a turn. I does NOT like to get to slow while banking in a turn. It will fall out of the sky if your too low to recover. Definitely does not fly like a trainer. I have two of these. I probably work harder flying this plane than any other of my planes, including larger EDF jets. Not sure why. It is more sensitive in the air than anything I have. It's work!!! The only reason I have them and bought a new one like yours is because they look so super awesome and scale. And when I open the cargo door and drop parachutes.... Makes it all worth it.

    Whoa! That’s a lot of big fat fuselage and a skinny wing, too- don’t think they’re designed for tight turns, so that probably helped too. Love the lubricants in the work room, too! (Did you lubricate the pilot before the flight? lol) Say hello to Tom for me!

    good analysis. if possible, you should determine whether the loss of the prop was followed by servo glitching (from excess vibration). because, it can be seen that there was a LOT of roll moment happening during the crash. in a typical of servo glitch control loss/crash, servos peg and ailerons go to max deflection; throttle might go to max also. d
