Amazing Persian Knife - Wedding Gift

Making a Persian fighter as a wedding gift! Bladesmith Walter Sorrells demonstrates the making of a custom Persian style knife in this month's Pops Project of the Month, sponsored by Pop's Knife Supply. This awesome build starts with 154 CM steel and includes crazy G10 handle scales and Loveless bolts. Plenty of grinding tips and tricks, heat treating, and a cool method of drilling handle scales using superglue.
The video also includes news about Pops' move to a brand new and expanded facility outside Atlanta.

I like watching these for encouragement. You do all the same stuff I do, but your knives turn out 100X better :D At least I know what mine could be like with enough practice.

that handle scale material is absolutely stunning!! I had no idea I could be so moved by nice wood grain and figured wood, until I started into blade-smithing!! I guess its G10 material, as you explained while I was typing this comment... but my statement about beautiful wood grains still stands! :)

As always so crisp and clean on the grind. Beautiful work. Really hope at some time to meet you in person to thank you. You’ve been a huge inspiration for my work in knifemaking and would love to take a course in your shop and hammer on some steel sometime.

Why don't you use a bandsaw to remove the excess material from the blank of steel and then use the coarse belt grinder to get down to your layout line? For my way of thinking it would be much faster and a lot less small particles flying around.

In Appalachia it's considered bad to give a knife as a wedding or housewarming gift. The recipient may turn out to be your enemy. It's an old Scots-Irish idea that still exists.

⭕️with all your knowledge and skills... if you would... which stock removal steel do you recommend for a "rust-less" blade (or as close to it as possible) to make a self-defense blade as an EDC ? i jus got my first delivery of 1095 and figured i would ask the professional. thank you sir.

How does that laser work on other steels like 80CRV2 or 1095 etc...

Walter, you should sell those simple bevel grinding jigs, i would buy a couple for, say, $40 each. Jusy sayin, you could make a killing on those. Yea I know, too much time spent for a measly fotey, okay, $50. I would still buy at least one. Good luck, and thanks for what you do.

At 11:45 what do you use to clamp your handle scales into the vise with? I assumed that you would do all the drilling before shaping so that the clamping surface would be square and solid, but you evidently have a solution for thin irregular shapes. I have seen fractal vises, but that didn’t look like one

I'm a complete noobie but to me it looks like he just used some parallels (from machining/milling) in a drill press vise (the parallels holding it up in the vise). Or his drill press vise has a step in it.

Nice. My mom would’ve wanted to make sure you ‘sold’ this gift to the recipient for a penny as not to superstitiously sever the relationship.
