    Thanks for sharing your work. While I note comments like “don’t have children around”, and understand the safety concerns, you were aware of where they were and directed them to go to or stay in safe places. The lessons you taught them are ones they will remember for their lifetimes, and likely apply to their own problems. You taught them that they can outsmart and overcome obstacles that seem daunting at first. You worked together as a family, which is stronger as a unit than any individual member. You shared your ideas and approaches to address the problem. You listened to your wife and your children and acted on their concerns or suggestions, even if it was just acknowledging that you should be safe. That’s being a great Dad in my book. Thanks for taking the time to share your video.

    I used to use an old rim back when I was younger working on a ranch. That was mid 90s to 2001. I fixed fences everyday and when I had an old cedar post to pull I used an old rim and chain and yanked it out with the truck. It worked everytime and I never had to floor it and the chain would never come off the rim and it was much safer.

    My father used Western Electric wire spools. The huge ones. You had to pull 10 feet to pull 1 foot up. We pulled some huge stumps of locust and the runners to put a home garden in back in the sixties. With a 1948 buick super.

    Log chains don't store energy like a cable would. I use log chains every week cutting timber. Never one time did a broken log chain snape back. They just fall to the ground.

My passions came from my Grandfather including me in his 'chores' as well; and they left a lasting and loving memory of him to this day! By the way, I believe you would have faster success by cutting off the branches and main trunk Before you go to pulling the trunk and root-ball system out. It would also make for an easier/safer cleanup that your children could also help you with!

    About ten years ago I needed to buy a come-along like you're using here. I went to Sears hardware and not only did they not carry them but not a single employee had any idea what it was even after I described it in detail. Same thing happened at Pep Boys. You know America is circling the drain when you experience this sort of incompetence. I finally went to Harbor Fright bought one. They sold a couple different size come-alongs.

  • @peternyc

    @peternyc

    Жыл бұрын

    America did it to itself. Because we spent so many dollars in Korea and Vietnam, the Bretton Woods gold standard collapsed. This was predicted by an economist named Robert Triffin in the 1950's. There were too many dollars overseas, and those countries where those dollars were spent converted them to gold, as per the Bretton Woods agreement ($35/oz). Eventually Nixon closed the gold window and the world began its free floating currencies that we have today. In order to maintain the monopoly on having the dollar function as the global reserve currency, the US had to become the world's net debtor nation and had to run a budget and trade deficit. This was the only way that the top 0.1% could maintain their power over the country and the world. Pump dollars outside the US so that they can return as the price paid for US Treasuries and thereby enable tax cuts that can be used for asset speculation. Manufacturing jobs in this new economic design had to be shipped overseas, and with it went the manufacturing knowledge - hence the massive ignorance and incompetence you talk about in your comment. This ignorance was and is a feature, not a bug, so to speak. The Reagan tax cuts, meant to spur domestic manufacturing by increasing domestic investment in productive enterprises, was used instead as money for FDI, foreign direct investment. The 0.1% got free money from tax payers like you and me in the form of a tax break. They invested that money overseas in low wage poor countries. How could American workers compete? We couldn't. No longer could a blue collar worker raise a family on one income, buy a home, car, take vacations, and grill out on the weekends. The American dream was over. Making money wasn't dead, but the blue collar worker was no longer the backbone of the country. Higher education was pushed by our country as the only way to get ahead. This, of course, is exactly when free public education died in the US. My parents' generation went to public universities for free!!! Since the 1970's, inflation in all higher education accelerated to the point where a kid needs to take out the equivalent of a mortgage just to get what my mom and dad got for free. If the country had not planned on having an economy where the US consistently ran budget and trade deficits, then the world would not have been able to obtain enough dollars to use as the global currency of trade. As of 2015, 80% of international transactions used the dollar. This is also why the US military has increased its footprint all over the globe. The function of the military is first and foremost a banking function. We have over 1,500 military bases around the world, I think. Probably more. They are dollar distribution points. 80% of global trade occurs in dollars. As of 2015, FX in dollars was $5 Trillion per day. Per day!!! Americans don't understand what currency is because we earn and spend dollars only. Most other countries' general population deals with multiple currencies on a daily basis in their household routines, which means they have an intuitive understanding of the importance of currency. Americans don't. We don't understand the role of currency in our knowledge and skills, our work, etc. Because the American empire demands that the world use our currency, we have to pump those dollars out into the world. Deficit spending, trade deficit, and military spending are how we do it. And it costs us absolutely nothing to deficit spend - nothing from an accounting definition I mean. We create Treasuries, which are nothing more than IOU's. The world gladly accepts those treasuries and in return, they swap them with the surplus dollars they all accumulate during the course of trade and business. The more interaction each country has with each other and with the US, the more dollar transactions occur, and the more need to park those excess dollars safely into Treasuries. Those Treasuries are the collateral side of money creation in the money markets that investment bankers use. No budget deficit, no collateral for new money creation. No trade deficit, no collateral for new money creation. No military expansion, no collateral for new money creation. When the world parks its excess dollars with us by buying US Treasuries, the dollars we receive from them finance our budget deficit. With that financing, our wealthy can then take their tax cuts and invest in overseas production of goods that are then sent back here for our ignorant and incompetent working class to buy at cheap prices. Never in the history of the human race has mayonnaise been so cheap! The influx of dollars from the purchase of Treasuries means that there is more money banks have to lend. Where does that spending power go? Real estate and Wall Street. This is why the massive inflation of housing prices in America directly coincided with the loss of manufacturing/productive jobs in the US. The average working class American might have a little more college education under his belt, but his earning potential relative to the price of housing has fallen like a 2 ton rock in the middle of a lake. Looks like all that education produced a lot of dumb clucks! This is why so many working class people who had smarts and weren't afraid to take risks went into house flipping. Incomes couldn't meet the financial terms of a 30 year mortgage, but there wasn't a shortage of banks willing to lend greater and greater amounts of money towards a housing stock that didn't increase in size proportional to the rise in money lent. As of 2015, mortgages made up 80% of all commercial loans in the US, and 80% of those mortgages were for homes that were already built. In other words, the new money created by those loans didn't create any new employment. Those loans were and are speculative loans. They make housing more expensive, especially when you consider that the incomes of regular Americans are not increasing. It's a win-lose game of speculation. That is America since the fall of the Bretton Woods system. When politicians in Washington tell us that we have to be responsible in our national spending, they want all of us to believe the country is making a painful sacrifice when the federal government deficit spends. They either are ignorant, or they are lying. It doesn't matter which side of the aisle, both the Dems and the GOP are covering for their donors. Deficits and spending make the 0.1% super wealthy and make us working people poor. The politicians' job is to convince regular people that we are the ones responsible for the massive budget deficits, and by extension, the loss of our own jobs to the 3rd world and the high cost of university and so on. We are not the ones responsible. It was all part of the global financial plan and it's not a conspiracy theory. It's just finance 101. Loss of productive jobs and knowledge; loss of free, quality education; loss of affordable housing; loss of community and the social fabric that makes a healthy community, etc. etc. It's not hard to see that the current global situation involving Russia and China are not what they seem. The US wants war because it doesn't want the current situation to change. The US doesn't want working Americans to become productive. It wants free money it can use to generate more profits at our expense, all the while convincing us that we are the ones with a spending problem. Sorry for the rant. People who watch videos like this one on stump pulling and so forth are regular folks who need to know the truth. There's a reason so many good people understand that cities are cesspools. Cities don't have to be but they are. Happy winching everyone!

    I do the same thing with a piece of 6 x 6 post about 3 ft long, starting with it at about a 45° Angle and pull it back over top dead center with a come along or my truck. Speaking of tires, you can use a piece of pipe with that come along, to put a tire back on the bead of the wheel. Just take one wrap around the center of the tire and attach the come along to both ends to the pipe. When the tire spreads out, put some air to it.

Several people have commented just to use a rim without the tire, so you don't have the tire trying to tip over like it was for me. I'm going to try that next time-might be worth a shot if you've got one lying around. Do remember to lay a blanket or coat or something over a part of your cable/chain so if it fails, it won't fling so violently. I forgot that step when I did it. 😉

  • @TomWylie

    @TomWylie

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm not positive, but my guess is that it would harm or stress the tree too much, and it probably wouldn't survive. The two reasons I think so are: 1. The cinching action of the chain around the tree trunk could permanently damage the tree and its ability to circulate fluids up and down through the trunk and inner bark area. One way to help with this would be to use a 2 inch wide lifting sling or tow strap instead of the chain, so it would be gentler on the bark, but unless you are using a very strong strap, you risk the strap breaking and injuring yourself or others, or damaging your pulling vehicle, etc. 2. This method yanks the roots out of the ground violently, often breaking some of the most important roots. This would be very stressful on the tree and it might not recover from it. I've never done it before, but from my understanding the best way to transplant trees is to dig up the soil around the tree and carefully move that soil intact along with the tree itself so, the roots aren't disturbed much.

    Kids COMPLETELY out of the line of pull!! Stuff goes flying when something comes loose or breaks! I almost lost an eye when I used an inadequate come along and accidentally overloaded it. (The prior owner had put a solid handle on it instead of the conduit handle it was manufactured with. The handle didn’t bend - let me “feel” the overload.) CAREFUL!!

    That was real scary when i saw the kids around a come along and tight chain on a bouncy tire. The rebound on that could mess someone up. Im feeling like chain, moving blanket over the chain and forward momentum on a rolling truck would just be safer. Interesting concept tho

    As long as there is no rope being used in the pulling, there is almost no spring energy there to fling the chain or cable around. The tire could jump out and fly through the air, however.

    @@peacebeuntoyou8934 I made a video about it but I never put it out, Keith Kalfas has one. Just take a sawsall and cut two circles around the tree then pop the section of root in between the two cuts to allow room for your shovel and pry the main plant section out. Here in Louisiana it works great most roots are shallow, if the tree has roots going deeper you’ll have to pry the plant up and cut deeper down but that’s probably 1 out of 50 that I’ve done, I can usually get trees, shrubs, and stumps out in a few minutes. Good luck.
