Amazing Grand Canyon Monsoon Storms, Arizona, USA

September 12th, 2022: The remnants of Hurricane Kay injected new life to the monsoon by funneling up hordes of tropical moisture. Many strong thunderstorms impacted Arizona, including the Grand Canyon, and some dropped a blanket of hail (which almost looked like a coating of snow). I was able to see beautiful thunderstorm development on the drive to the national park, and the South Rim provided a great vantage point to view distant storms at sunset. Evening light illuminated deep storm clouds and briefly cast stunning warmth onto the canyon walls. The lightning show added even more splendor.
From the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: “Forecast to make the closest pass to Southern California, Kay brought damaging winds and heavy rains that drenched Mexican coastal states from Oaxaca to Nayarit causing property damage, flooding, mudslides, and three deaths in Guerrero. The storm’s outer bands also hit Southern California and southwestern Arizona, bringing wind gusts of near 100 mph to some areas, primarily in San Diego County, California, as well as heavy rainfall that caused some flash flooding that damaged roads, and power outages in both states. As Kay weakened over land, remnants of the storm reportedly caused localized, heavy damage in Death Valley National Park including road closures due to flooding that left visitors stranded in their vehicles. Rangers even reported “waterfalls” cascading through the park as well as mudflows.”

Really glad to see someone talking about the remaining effects of a hurricane, my first real experience of a thunderstorm was back in the summer of '05, my first job at the North Rim after Hurricane Emily which proved to be a gracious storm over the Grand Canyon North Rim. I had the day off and was in the employee dinning pub when the first bolt of lightning alerted me to the *oncoming six hour beauty* I was about to witness!

I hiked the Bright Angel Trail from Rim to River and back in one LONG day back in April, when it was still cool temps. Very changeling and exhausting, but so rewarding!

I always get the $80 annual pass every year too. I live in California and every year I visit multiple national parks and monuments in CA and nearby states every year. I’m taking an epic two week road trip up the PAC NW, a region, embarrassingly have spent 0 time in, but I’ll be visiting several NPs, but already got my pass from when I took my girlfriend to Yosemite and Sequoia last month.

Beautiful video! Runners run the Canyon: Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim! It's about 52 miles or so. It can be done in a day. I plan to do it in a couple of years. I love your vids!
