Watch out for the boiled lindseed oil!! If you put it on a rag/ paper towel make sure you have it in a metal can or despose of it where it won't be a issue if it ignites I had a rag that had boiled lindseed oil on it and threw it in a garbage can. 6 hours later I get woken up by a terrible smell and ended being the boil lindseed oil rags combusting in the garbage can!!

Forget the axe type and head, this guy knows what he is doing. The approach, knowing to hold it upside down and not rest it on the floor, listen for and feel for changes, retract and repeat. Watch how he cuts the wood with a knife not perpendicular to the wood but parallel and up to ghe metal of the axe head. All correct. Well done sir!

I know this is a late comment, but pignut hickory is the densest wood in America and it makes fabulous handles some of the best I've ever seen, that's the only wood my great grandfather would use and those handles are still as strong as nails now 70 years later, but he took really really good care of them.

So many haters out there. Did any of you actually think about the comments you left before you wrote them? Let me make sure we are all on the same page here....What you are looking for in a KZread channel is a person to devote countless hours every week to coming up with original topics and ideas, producing high quality video footage, editing that footage and delivering it to you for your free entertainment. Correct? Furthermore, you expect this person to do that multiple times each week without collecting anything for himself? You expect this person to inundate you with great ideas and valuable knowledge for FREE? A huge high five to all the folks that encourage and appreciate the content. As for the haters, you are obviously part of the population that is currently deteriorating our amazing Country. Always looking for a free ride and a free meal. Get off your ass and do something and quit looking for a crutch to support your laziness. I personally have nothing against anyone making money so long as they deserve it. Cody, you deserve every penny you make from your channel and you should always be proud of it. Keep living The Dream man and best wishes to you and yours. Brent Hilton

I am so glad I watched this. A few months ago I had to replace a handle on an old splitting maul and just got a store bought handle. I have already started to have problems with it being loose and now I realize it wasn't the handle itself, I just didn't go through the process of seating it properly. Thanks to this I am going to (hopefully) do a better job with it and wont have to fix it again.

Cody, I have watched so many of your videos and I want to say that I appreciate your ability to not only tell a good story but also your natural way of sharing and teaching. You are a born teacher. My career has been in the building industry. I have taught many men carpentry and woodworking. The frustrating part but also the rewarding part is that when their skills get developed and they are proficient at what they do, they usually move on. Either to self employment or up the ladder to another challenge. I have learned much from watching your videos and look forward to more of your projects. A true Master works toward the student exceeding the Master. Such is why we share our lives with others. We are community and we all should serve community for its ultimate health and well being. God bless you and yours.

Very nice job hanging that handle. It amazes me how hard it is to find good axe handles. Over Christmas I had two axes that I was refurbishing and it took me 7 hardware stores before I could find two somewhat decent handles. The good part is I was able to educate a lot of hardware store associates on what to look for in a handle thanks to the good instruction you've given us over the years! Hopefully they will pass the word up to the change to the store buyers and manufacturers. Thanks again!

What a beautiful job on the handle Cody, nice attention to detail on the head mounting. Wishing I had seen this before I did my axe head, I see I made so many mistakes. Well I guess I can start over and do it right now. Thank you.

Ohhhh Dude, I love you. So many guys talk to much. Talk 15 minutes about what they are GOING to do. Then do a poor job of it. No, no. You didn't do that. You explained so much I have had problems with on fixing axes or any other tool that needs a new handle. I learned soo much from you. Perfect delivery of narrative. Great ax head. And your treatment of the handle and the way you did it was perfect. I may never have such an awesome ax but I will say this, next rusty ax head I get that needs a handle, I can now do it perfectly. Maybe not as beautifully as you did it but well enough that it can last a very long time. You explained and demonstrated every single technique I will need to do it right rather than just rushing through it to have a so so job like I have done in the past. I now know how far down the head must be to be done right. I know what to do with the excess material. I know what to do when the wood is too tight and curls over. I learned how to tap the handle into the head and how to extract it properly. I know now to use linseed oil to treat it. I never even thought of that before. By the time you were done I was totally in love with your techniques and feeling grateful as ever I could be. Thanks man. BTW, you did bring it up so... ya, your hair cut you got last time sucks. Just growing out made it look worse. I suggest a new barber. I get a barber than cuts in such a way that a month later it looks fine.

Nice work! There is less chance of splitting if you start the step wedge with the grain instead of against it
