I am a seventy year old semi-retired toolmaker, and this is the stuff brought to earth by aliens. Seriously, today’s young people need to be taught what modern manufacturing is really doing. Going to work, and being paid to create jewels from pieces of metal, beats the ass off from sitting at home directing a bloody war. It is truly a different world. The gear cutting sequence left me sitting with my mouth open.

Yeah, the modern CNC machine tools are an amazing bit of technology, particularly the 5-axis simultaneous work. Gear skiving with the axis working synchronously at thousands of rpm is almost magic. The carbide inserts cutting through SS and inconel like it was butter and often without coolant is next level stuff. They've come a long way from a manual Bridgeport to a CNC machine tool with 4um accuracy working from a 3D model and planning its own cutting strategy for best performance. Can you imagine what Kelly Johnson could have built with this tech?

Jason Moore , Oh, that Black Bird. Yes, a man who could lead a project of that depth and complexity would certainly find some very interesting uses for this generation of manufacturing equipment. Your mention of the Black Bird, reminds me of Quicky Rabbit assuring his girlfriend that “This won’t hurt, did it.” There is so much interesting and challenging work to be had in today’s manufacturing world, that nearly anyone could find a life’s path. Much of the blame lies at the feet of our educational system. They all went to college, so to amount to anything in life, you need to do what they did. I got that shit in 1965. I asked the high school principal if he would be happy if I became “a high school principal like you?” That seemed to irritate him.

I worked for Sandvik Coromant UK for twenty three years. It’s good to see there still leading the way, but five or more axis make it all the more possible.

These machines and tools are mind blowing but I find happiness and art in creating the parts I create with math and an old Ez path lathe I have no cad cam or solids. More times than I can count I have been told it can't be made in house send it out. I usually say negotiate the date and let me give her a go, I have surprised a few of the older guys in the shop and actually gained a lot of respect for my talents as to how everyone saw me as the F.N.G. I love dropping my bosses jaw and I love my old path s and all the love the machine has shown me.
