AMAX4 Lecture Series VIDEO 6/6

The rationale behind the AMX4 algorithm and related concepts are presented in this video by Dr Ben McKenzie. Ben has been a Director of Emergency Medicine Training for 10 years, a retrieval specialist for 15 years and cares about the standard of Emergency Medicine. The concepts and science behind the AMAX4 algorithm are in no way new but are presented in logical sequence to aid a specific response in a time critical situation. The concepts are presented in an hour long lecture that Ben has refined over the course of delivering it many times to two thirds of Victoria's Emergency Departments and over 500 consultants and registrars.
The lec ture has been divided into 6 parts. This is part 6.

Ben, I couldn't hold back my emotion watching the last session of your son Max's story. We are going to hold a simulation and training session to practice the AMAX4 algorithm here in country hospital Victoria next week as a group of rural GP anaesthetists. Thanks for sharing your own tragic loss that we can all learn and prevent loss of life because of anaphylaxis and severe asthma presenting to our Urgent Care Centre because we AMAX4 is delivered efficiently.

Dr. Ben Thank you for this presentation. I am a paramedic from the western United States; my father is Australian as well. I am glad some Critical Care Paramedics here in the USA are finding your work and beginning to share it through podcasts and social media. I take anaphylaxis very seriously having my own experiences prior to starting prehospital emergency medicine. But I learned so much more from your presentation. Especially the criticality of approaching hypoxic arrests differently from a standard cardiac arrest. And yes as a paramedic one of the hardest lessons learned are that one must build and enforce “hard decks” I refer to them as “points of no return” I look to now implement the AMAX4 model in my toolbox and algorithms. Once again, thank you for this education. Your vulnerability and rawness I do appreciate as it illustrates the importance of why we do what we do. God Bless

Ben, I'm an ED nurse with ICU, CCU, Paeds and trauma experience. I cannot imagine how devastating this must have been for you, and still is. You are honouring Max and changing lives with your courage and willingness to share this. I have been in many hypoxic arrests and I can immediately relate to your description of the agonising downtime, time wasted while everyone tries to bag and do CPR on someone with de=oxygenated blood only being circulated, all the while resisting the obvious choice of ETT or surgical airway. Our EDs in which I work, now embrace the VORTEX model and we do SIMS on CICO scenarios..... but probably not enough. I will loudly be advocating to our FACEMs that we roll out this AMAX4 structured approach..... thank you so much for sharing this with us...
