    @@LearnLightAndSoundSessions Really great review and agree with @RobertFeliciano . When I saw the color richness i was immediately dissatisfied and found it lackluster. So when I heard your use cases, I totally agreed with what you said. Although I use primarily nanlite, I do own an Amaran 200x and find that it makes a great utilitarian fill/easy key. And I think if you're looking and can swing it, the color richness from the nanlite 60c is better if you can shell out the extra $250.

    Hi Curtis, another great review helping me put this line 150/300C into context vs other products. Increasingly you are becoming one of my 'go to' reviewers, whose opinion(s) I like to check out before buying kit in the sound and light arena. I'm an amateur with lots of stills experience over many years, but now trying to teach myself the tech aspects of video and film making. I have just bought an Amaran 200X S, based in part on your opinions re high SSI ratings for use as a key light. I can see how a 150C might also work as an effects and background light, although as I learn I'm tempted to consider buying a second 200X S head before a 150C (for consistency, more power, spare unit etc). I have learnt a lot from your channel. An excellent YT resource, so naturally I subscribed about a year back 😊.

    I distrust the bail (bale?) on all these prosumer units tbh. But they seem to be more robust than previously. I definitely agree that they’re better suited for studio use. WRT fragility comparisons, we should also consider replacement/repair costs. Would the cost of completely replacing one of these units be less than replacing an HMI globe? Repairing a buzzing ballast? I prefer old style tungsten and HMI lighting units because that’s what I’m used to. However, I’m retired now and getting back into it as a hobby (after almost 20 years of doing other things). I think if I was working, I’d rather see a truck filled with mole-richardson and arri conventional lights and more robust LED lights. I’d just feel more confident in the equipment.

One of the reasons I don't pulll out my 300D as a one man show is because of the difficulty in size and management... I'm constantly looking for smaller and lighter set ups with the same power. The 150c & 300c have +/- G/M this makes them more accurate as far a color reproduction and ability to match the room environment. The 200X S while good, still is not color accurate to a 0.0 correction gel, due to the the lack of +/- G/M. The 150c & 300c can be. So in terms of color accuracy and dialing the exact color you need, the new ones are much better, IMO. Great review!

    Thank you Curtis for these reviews. I plan to buy the Amaran 200x S light after I watched you review about it this morning and use it as a KEY light for interviews. I was planning to buy an RGB light like the PIXEL K80 because it's cheaper. Do you think it's better to stick with AMARAN and get an RGB light from them like the 150C or 300C? Or is it better for my small budget to go for the cheaper key light AMARAN 60xs and the RGB 150C?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    It depends on how much output you need from your key light. In a space where you can turn off all the other lights and block any light coming in from windows, a smaller light like the 60Xs should be fine. But if you're needing to overpowering any existing light, you'll need a more powerful key light than the 60Xs.

    The Amaran lights are plastic, very different from the Aputure 1200. So the first question you need to answer for yourself is how important to you is build quality and durability? Do you need RGB? Not knowing the answer to these questions I cannot say. But for me, if I work regularly on location and not having a need for RGB, I would opt for the Aputure 300x.

    @@iamnotapoet I see - by "stereo" you mean two channel wireless microphone systems, got it. 32-bit float is a lot to send over the air, especially in the 2.4GHz range which is often saturated with WiFi and other consumer wireless activity. It isn't impossible, but there's more work to do. In some of the pro systems, they do this in slightly different ways, 24-bit float an example. I don't know if they'll tie mics to cameras - essentially have in-built wireless receivers in the camera. That'll move some of the cost to the camera which means higher camera price, whether you need the receiver or not...so my guess is that it is not likely to be a widely implemented pattern. Maybe in vlogging cameras. But that's just a guess.
