Later in the 70's I lived on Umbarger Rd. right behind the track along the back straight. In the early 70's my family would stop at the SPur on Monterey Rd and have breakfast then go to the races. I never race the mile but I raced the 1/2 mile many time both as an amateur and a pro. Man I loved those days. I didn't realize how much until I knew that I would never be able to be there again. Those days are gone. No more track, no more racing, no more fun in life.

I want one of those ABC sport jackets , lol. Indy 500 blacked out in Indianapolis, I thought only the NFL did that? That first heat was stacked, all top riders ,look how long they stayed packed together! God I miss that place, he was right “SJ was a happening “way more then 16 thousand, I remembered it was packet, was an easy place to sneak into.I think Remero was the oldest out there. Man I miss the Burritto, Godspeed to him and all the other flat trackers not with us anymore.🇺🇸

Wow. Old memories seeing all these racers. I was s a 12yr old sister in 1974 watching her older brother Brian #17R, (#177R, #56) racing there. Even Ascot and the Stockton mile and other tracks

Hank Scott #14 was never an HD Factory Rider but his bike on the mile tracks was always faster than the best HD Factory Race Team XR's. That's because his engine builder/Tuner/Sponser was JERRY BRANCH(Branch Flowmetrics Long Beach,Ca). Jerry did all the Alloy XR750 & XR1000 heads for HD going back to 1972. When he was doing his own R&D on the new alloy cylinder heads he came up with a port configuration that was flowing better than the Harley Engineers design and producing 3 + HP more on his Dyno. Branch told Dick O'Brien of this and asked him if he wanted the incoming unfinished XR heads to be ported this way. Obrien and probably Matt Kroll said NO; port them to our design specs. So what you could of had for Free when buying a privateer XR back then ended up costing you close to 300 bucks for those extra horses because HD's Ego got in the way of common sense. Branch got 100 hp out of his XR's before HD Race Dept. ever did and Hank Scott's 14 mile track wins were on Branch built XR's As you can see from the Video, The Factory Race Team XR's had nothing on Scott's Privateer HD....GREAT RACE!!! .

Nothing on Terry Poovey 18... I love him like all these good ole boys... but title is a bit misleading. Terry gets second on the heat... Then he loses the whole shot in the final and falls to the back. Not seen the rest of the race. There are some early lead shots of Scott Parker 11 and Alex Jorgensen 44 battling at the front half for the lead... but the cameras stay on Hank Scott 14, Jay Springsteen 9 and Randy Goss 13 most of the race... with a few peeks at Ricky Graham 41 toward the end. Hank holds on through some rough turns and pulls out ahead to win it...A sneeky Jorgy slips into 3rd at the finish line.... just behind Springer 2nd... leaving Graham in 4th and Goss in 5th. Damn fine race!!
