Am I Spoiling My Child Rotten? (Childhood Obesity Documentary)

From obesity to alcohol misuse, from rotting baby teeth to hearing problems caused by passive smoking - Britain’s largest children’s hospital is treating younger and younger patients for health problems which are ultimately preventable. Many are the result of kids’ lifestyles and are, according to the experts, causing them unnecessary suffering.
With unprecedented access to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, this documentary meets the kids, the pediatricians treating them and follows them home in an attempt to uncover the root cause of their problems. It is clear that some of the basic health messages from the doctors are not getting through to parents.
The A&E is a busy department and having to deal with cases such as drunk children is not only time consuming for staff, but can be upsetting for other young patients too. Operations on dental, glue ear and obesity cases are helping clog up a system that’s already under considerable strain. The hospital estimates they spend around a million pounds a year on treating preventable conditions, enough to buy them a new MRI scanner.

Leon's mother is called a "feeder" - someone who deliberately overfeeds a vulnerable person in order to exert full control over them. It's disgusting, cruel and abusive. His wheelchair garners her sympathy and attention. If Leon was grossly underweight and staved by his mother, he would be removed. There is no difference here; he'll be dead by 25 if an intervention doesn't happen now. He should be removed from her immediately. She's hostile and aggressive.

Children have good instincts. When they are full they don't want to eat. They are also naturally active creatures -- they love to run and jump and play. Even in countries where children have very little food to eat, the children still run and jump and play because it is so natural!! It is a horrific tragedy to see child be stuffed with food beyond sickness and prevented from participating in active natural play.

I really think there's something much more psychological going on with her than stupidity or denial. She knows what she's doing, & she's rendering him dependent on her. He can never 'leave' her if he can't take care of himself, & even worse, down the road, this will surely have a psychological effect on him as well... Especially socially. He already can't play with other children (which means maybe no or very few friends), & his weight is going to be a nightmare for him at school as he gets older. But that means that he can be home with his mother instead. It's also a 'control' thing. She's dangerous to him, & is willing to cause him pain/discomfort for the sake of what _she_ wants.

This is abuse, a five year old isn't able to buy his own food, this is 100% his mother's doing and she should have been stopped long ago. This is nothing but abuse, she's seriously handicapped her child and is slowly killing him he should have been taken away long before he ever needed a wheelchair

I think overfeeding would be harder to find a reasonable line for. There are also real genetic disorders that cause kids to be bottomless pit starving nonstop. I forgot what it’s called, but if you google, you’ll find it. I forgot if there’s a treatment or not but that would really suck to have to deal with.

More praise should be on that man. I commend him for cutting down the smoking and attempting to quit. As a parent and an ex smoker I know personally how hard it is. And adding to that a single dad. Well done sir. That other dad smoking inside the house is horrible. Smoking close to any child should be seen as abuse. Any medical problem that boy has I’m willing to bet that it’s his fathers fault by smoking around him. 🤦‍♀️ it’s actually infuriating listening to that “father” deny any fault

Nathaniel Sison it is selfish, just because something is hard to stop doesn’t mean that continuing to do it (to the detriment of you child) isn’t selfish. It’s the epitome of selfish. The father is putting his own cravings above the health and safety of his child. That’s deplorable. I dislike the father in the video for being so cavalier and cruel. He didn’t even try to stop, he just chose to continue to hurt his child. The other father who stopped smoking immediately when his child got ill is an example of how a good parent takes responsibility for their actions and puts their child’s needs above their wants. I’m happy your father was able to quit because that’s good for anyone, and you’re right that it’s not easy to do. I hope he’s doing well!

I worked with a dental surgeon who performed extractions under sedation, one day we had a child of about 9yrs old who needed to have 10 teeth removed including adult teeth. The surgeon got frustrated with the parent and told her it was basically child abuse, the parent complained to the general dental council and the surgeon was reprimanded! When you see kids suffer like this everyday it's so frustrating and even trying to educate some parents goes nowhere when you see the same child back 6months later with more teeth to take out!

"I just wish someone would put a camera in the corner of my house and watch my son, then come back and tell me I'm doing something wrong. Because I guarantee they won't find nothing." Umm. They did. They followed you and your son around with a camera. In the span of after school, he walked part of the way home and then was pushed in a wheelchair. Then he was given chocolate cake, a full bowl of cereal with fruit piled high, then an adult portion of fish and vegetables! He probably also had a snack before bed! Yes, five year olds generally need snacks. But that means instead of a full bowl of cereal with 2 types of fruit, a small bowl of cereal. Or just a banana and a couple strawberries. But not all three and definitely not in that portion. Cake at a school party, I can understand. But he does not then need to come home and eat ANOTHER piece of cake! Not only that, he doesn't play outside. He sat and did a puzzle, then watched tv as far as I saw! The only exercise he got once at home was throwing that tantrum and climbing into his chair for dinner. Unacceptable.

I'd be careful of that. If you don't give your child any treats ever, they will likely end up building an addiction to them when they gain freedom 18 or so years down the line. I would recommend building good habits in your child, so they don't end up overeating them when they leave your care. Doing things like rewarding good behavior with a treat is good, and just so long as you're brushing their teeth every night would prevent tooth decay and if living a healthy lifestyle, exercise would prevent weight gain in future years. Just something to think about. All about having a healthy relationship with treats :)

Why all are these parents blaming their children like it’s their fault? What do you mean your child HAS to have 4-5 lollipops a day and doesn’t brush his teeth before he goes to bed. HELLO YOU’RE THE PARENT! You have the control! You do the shopping! You feed your child! You are responsible for them! 🤦🏼‍♀️

All the problems in the world come from our ego. Whether it's blaming ourselves or the others, it's always our ego feeding itself with stupid ideas and lies and especially with the idea we have the right to do something. These parents for example, think they have the right to be happy by neglecting parenting and blaming the child for eating. Pathetic and sick.

Knowing that something you are doing is harming your child and then continuing to engage in that behaviour is abuse. They need child protective services to intervene.

Leons mother is feeding him way too much for a 5 year old, even if the food is healthy you have to have proper portions.

Same here. My dad forced us to eat man size portions. While my mom would put me on fad diets even giving me rx. All 4 of us have eating disorders.

stockart whiteman Maybe a few days/weeks/months in the slammer would change their minds!! Giving how inmates feel about & respond to child abuse, prisoners may be just the ticket to wake them up & stop thinking about only themselves. Have you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall when a child abuser is ‘dealt’ with by inmates 🤔🤫 I’m not a weirdo, but fully support vigilante just...swift, to the point & doesn’t cost us millions to house them!!!!
