    Jimin, the last member in this intro guide who specializes in contemporary dance, is the member you were thinking of for Dynamite. Coincidently, Jimin is also the member most likely to turn a space heater on and fiddle with its settings for an hour before realizing it's not plugged in. Jimin has repeatedly tried to pour sauces, gotten confused by the absence of liquid, then realized he never removed the seal on the bottle. RM is the clumsy one from the beginning of this vid, and might also do the same. V and JK are the ones likely to have unplugged the heater on you in the first place. Jin is the one who probably put the idea in V and JK's heads. J-Hope would laugh the loudest at your plight, but off to hug you to keep you warm. And Suga would plug the heater in for you before you even realized your mistake, or he'd fix the heater if it were broken.

    The concept of a leader here is not someone who takes the spotlight. In bts a leader is someone who shoulders extra responsibilty. The group was built around RM because of his songwriting skills and stage presence from an early age. He is the mediator between the group and the company and also between the group members. And he is also updated about what individuals members do, and all their unique strengths and weaknesses. Back in their early days when a fight occurred between members, he usually stepped up to resolve it.

    @@DivergentReactions Actually, I would argue that Jungkook is BTS's star because he is the most popular and most-searched idol, I think because of he is all-around and multi-talented and many appreciates him as a great visual too. I think for many reasons too, like his vocal tone and his musicality he performs. But Jungkook himself would not be able to shine if it is not for the BTS as a whole. They all work together and for each other.

    2:49 we call them the big3. The name of the 3 big companies is YG, SM and JYP entertainment. Basically if you debut from these companies, you're likely to have everything easier from groups who don't come from this big3. You'll already have fans even before your debut, you'll have the hype, and you'll have media on your side because the big3 is controlling the media and influence in South Korea. Blackpink is one of the groups that come from the big3 which is YG. While BTS had to work their asses off to be where they're today because they were underdogs and not to mention how this big3 used to and still shitting on BTS and tried and still try to sabotage BTS because they couldn't believe a group from a small company is this successful. 8:44 no, a leader in K-pop in general is not that type of leader such as in western who will get the spotlight etc. The leader here means the one who communicates with the company, and solves any conflict among the members, has a huge responsibility. Basically the alpha of the pack. 11:54 The way we refer to stars singing or dancing on the stage in Korea, we don't call them "stars" or "artists". The common way we call them is "idols". 50:29 for example "Kim Namjoon", Kim is his surname and the second word is his name.

    I think the "paid" is important because, on one side, each ticket was valid for two devices which could be on two different locations. Not everyone shared the ticket because you needed to give access to your Weverse account (a social and shop set of apps managed by BTS' company) so you needed trust the other person, but it was an option. And, in the other side, there were a lot of pirate transmissions for "broke ARMY", both massive ones on streaming platforms and social media, and small ones by Discord servers and groups of friends. So we'll never know how many people actually watched their online concerts. The official numbers alone were record-breaking

    @@DivergentReactions What @Areum Dawo said! And just to add some background-- the phrase comes from fanfiction's idea of the "One True Pairing"-- the couple that fans think are perfect for each other, whether or not they actually got together in the original show/book/whatever. OT7 means that, while an ARMY (fan) may be biased towards one (or more) member or another, all 7 of them are "perfect together" and necessary for BTS to be what they are, and to love BTS means loving all 7 of them. Many ARMYs do not take kindly to people who try to promote a favorite member over the others, especially by putting down other members. In interviews, the guys sometimes speculate about fate, and how unexpected it was that such different personalities were not only able to work together, but achieve such success and synergy and familial affection for each other. And they include ARMY in that formula, too-- they constantly express gratitude that ARMY found them and continue to stand by them through difficulties. On our side of the fate thing, many ARMYs talk about when BTS "found them," as opposed to when they came across BTS's music. For a lot of ARMYs, BTS's music and message connected with them at a time they needed it most, and helped them through a particularly dark time in their lives. The relationship between BTS and ARMY is really like nothing else I've encountered before in music. It's not your typical star/fan relationship where the star is happy to accept fans' money and adulation and maybe answer a bit of fan mail for a few lucky fans. BTS's love and concern for ARMY's well-being and happiness is genuine, and it shows in what they say at concerts and in every Live (which is a usually impromptu meeting of one or more members on a live video chat with ARMYs responding by text). It's very much a mutual admiration society. They may never be able to know us as individuals, but they do certainly care for us as people.

    BTS really popularized a lot of social media approaches that others have since scrambled to get a foothold in -- KZread and live-streaming with fans and their own variety show are just a few examples. When they first won Social Media Artists of the Year at the Billboards, every other kpop company crapped themselves and suddenly revamped or started their social media accounts.

    Actually, many dancers are amazed by Jimin because hip hop dancing is the exact opposite of contemporary dance. In hip hop, the movement is directed at the ground and many steps rely on strength and muscle control, whereas with contemporary dance, movement is directed upwards and limbs are stretched. I can't explain it well but there are many vlogs posted on KZread and google where people discuss the difference and explain why Jimin struggled at first with hip hop dance routines. He had to retrain his body.

    Yes, surname is listed first and first name is second…they also calculate age differently, so when they say their ages it’s about 1-2 years different (ex:JK says he joined at 15, but we in the west would say he was13). They count they time in the womb so when born are considered 1…then on Jan 1st everyone turns a year older.

    Korean names are generally three syllables. The family name first, followed by two syllable that make up the given/personal name. There is no middle name like in many western cultures. In traditional Korean naming practices the first syllable of the given name is generational. Jung Kook's brother is Jung-hyun; Jin and his brother are named Seok Jin and Seok Joong, respectively; Jimin's brother is Ji Hyun. RM, Suga, and V also have brpthers, but their parents did not follow this naming practice. You may notice that sometimes the two syllables are one word, separated by a space or a hyphen. The romanized spelling of the name is determined by the person. So Suga's given name can be seen as Yoongi, Yoon Gi, Yoon-gi, Yoonki, Yun-ki, or other variations. In Korean, it is always spelled 윤기 [윤(Yoon) 기 (Gi)]. Bonus, since you like linguistics. Regarding the spelling of YoonGi vs YoonKi, K and G are the same letter in Korean ㄱ. As you know the difference between hard G and K sound is one is vocalized. Koreans do not hear the difference. This can be confusing for English speakers just learning Korean. By the way, the J in Jungkook is pronounced the same as the J in Jimin and Jin. Also the last K in Jungkook is a glottal stop.

    in 2013, when BTS debuted, there were 3 huge entertainment companies that dominated the Kpop market (SM, YG, JYP). These companies had connections to all media outlets and even had entertainment reporters in their pockets. So they did everything they could to prevent BTS from being a 'problem' for them. Big Hit had no real power and couldn't do anything to swim against that negative current. That's why Bang PD went around the obstacles, sending BTS on an overseas tour and developing content on KZread and vLive. Most of Korea's general population had never heard of BTS until they performed live at the American Music Awards (2017) And even then, they didn't hear from Korean media but from radio/tv stations in Japan and Indonesia. It was amazing how shut out they were. Finally after their speech at the UN, Korean media could not ignore them.

    Yes, it was Jimin, but they all (vocal line) can reach those high tones and even in that they compliment each other. I would put it like this: JIMIN - the most distinct, very sweet and fairy-like, the one to make first time reactors lose control over their jaws because of how unusual it is, very useful in an all-male group, adds depth to the soundscape of the song JIN - airy, emotional and with it's own echo that acts like a real-life autotune, since he has wide vocal range and because of vibrato - his voice is like a glue that binds all the vocals together JUNGKOOK - clear, piercing and sharp, wonderful technically but with a lot of character, he hits those notes like no one before him - almost surgically but with ease and emotions V - since his voice is the lowest, he's not using it as often because it's needed elsewhere in the songs, but when he does - it's very soulful, jazzy, warm and he has absolute control over it

    In Korea they call idols the groups or soloists of popular music (what we call kpop), which by the way includes various genres such as edm, hip hop, rap, pop, rock, ballad, edm, etc. It's not just pop as many think. Even BTS has songs from other genres or fusions like r&b, jazz, blues, latin pop, etc. iTunes #1s represent the countries where a song or album managed to reach 1st place. V's song Sweet Night (not only does he perform, he's the main songwriter and lyricist) got the record for the most #1's in iTunes history, overall not by genre.

    Kpop is not called Kpop in Korea. It's called Idol music. The idols who perform in this industry are supposed to be as near perfection as possible. Because Kpop is not a genre-- it encompasses beauty, fashion, music and dance-- and can be any genre. It's more like performance art.. This is why BTS got lots of flak when they first started out. netizens criticized their looks, their style, etc. because they weren't like other groups. Generally, idol music has been looked down upon in Korea-- as music for kids. Just like in the west, people did not take it seriously, but BTS is slowly changing those assumptions.

    All 4 vocalists can hit the highest notes in Dynamite. It’s wild. They demonstrate that very well in their live Tiny Desk Concert. I LOVE a concept album and it’s what really drew me into them. As soon as I heard they had a whole album inspired by Demian by Herman Hesse I was hooked! Lol. That’s Wings, by the way. Many of their albums come in trilogies that explore a theme- Love Yourself flows from a fated idealized love, to the collapse of that relationship bc it wasn’t “true,” to the finale, all about the importance of loving yourself. (Lead singles are DNA, Fake Love, and Idol.) Their last true trilogy before the Proof album is Map of the Soul, based on a Jungian psychology of the self and identity. (The Rap Line each take a solo exploring Persona, Shadow, and Ego.) they are so smart and deep! They also have a storyline running through a good chunk of their albums (the Bangtan Universe), but it’s waaay too much for me so I just acknowledge it’s there and enjoy their videos on their own. LOL!

    iTunes exists in a lot of countires. So we count the reaching of number 1 only once per country. Ironically - with one exception - an Adele song - every song that made it in over 100 countries is a BTS song. Jimin actually began with Hiphop dancing. But when he changed schools to an performance school they had less Hiphop stlye classes and he had to do contemporary. Ironically the school was so impressed with his skill that - when his family couldn't pay for lessons - they waived the fee/a teacher paid or something simlar. The fluidity I think comes from his prior martial arts training. He plays a cutie but you don't want him really angry. He goes cold. He was also very good at school. I think that Jimin is possibly the member with the highest EQ in the group. Namjoon was once asked about stuff that would surprise fans about the members and he spoke about how young Yoongi (Suga) sometimes acts and how Jimin feels like the older one with wisdom far beyond his years. Namjoon learned a lot from Hoseok (J-Hope) and Jimin. There is also that interview with Jimin and Namjoon for the "BE" album where Jimin shook his head at his prior interview partner and Namjoon asked who that was. Jimin said the youngest and Namjoon mentioned JK to which Jimin just said with emphesized "The youngest". Namjoon just aknowledge that that is Jin. It can be confusing but they have many many personas and some seem to be opposite of each other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Personally I love bby gang mag's video essays. They help to understand like "BTS vs. K-pop" - which has a section that defines K-pop - and "you are wrong about K-pop" which destructs the "The Dark Side of K-pop" narrative. Music wise? Maybe their solo songs of the "Wings" album: - Begin (JK) - Lie (Jimin) - Stigma (V) - First Love (Suga) - Reflection (RM) - MAMA (J-Hope) - Awake (Jin) You nice! Keep going! 💜

The first is the Surname and the Other two is the name. For example: Kim Namjoon (RM) is in Korean 김남준. 김 = Kim (Surname) 남 = Nam 준 = Joon. That's also the reason why korean Surname are really sort and why there aren't so many different surnames in Korea. That's why in BTS three of the members have the same name. (Englisch isn't my first Language, sorry)

    I'm so impressed! I've never seen someone able to recall 6 out of 7 names after only their second reaction! The linguist in you might be interested to know that the Korean language, Hangul (Korea is called "Hanguk" in Korean) is a language isolate: it is not related to any other language, although it has over the centuries absorbed many words from other languages. The Korean phonetic alphabet was invented centuries ago by a progressive king to allow everyday people to be literate. Up until then, it was written using Chinese characters, which was very convoluted and difficult to learn since the languages aren't related. Following that king's death, the aristocracy predictably quashed that writing, which was only revived in modern times.

    BIG THREE 'YG" "SM" "JYPE" These entertainment companies dominated the entertainment industry for a long time. They have control of all TV, Media, and Radio. Since BTS come from a very small company at that time. They were having trouble getting onto TV and Radio. No media(press) want to interview them. They decided to use social media to get their music out. They also created their own Variety and Radio show. They conduct their own interviews. That's another reason ARMY is very protective of BTS. I have been an ARMY since day one. Seeing BTS come from the bottom to the VERY top. One very proud ARMY!!!! BTW Black Pink is from YG

    Yes, to answer your question towards the end, the Koreans have family name first and then their given name, so there are 3 with last name Kim (but as far as I know, they aren't related). Jungkook is pronounced with the J (not like a Y) and the first "k" in Jungkook is pronounced like a hard "G", so Jung Gook. That said, you did really well with the pronunciation and remembering names for being new. One other point, they were mentioning ages, but when they said Jungkook (for example) started at 15 - he actually joined Big Hit at 13 years of age (international age) and made his debut with BTS at 15. Korea has had a different way to calculate age, so you are already 1 when you are born and then I believe you add a year at January 1st. Rappers: RM, Suga, J-Hope. Vocalists: Jungkook (youngest), Jin (oldest), V and Jimin. The youngest just turned 25 on Sept 1st. The oldest will turn 30 in December.

    If you do react to "Singularity" by V, I also suggest the video "BTS - Singularity Comeback Trailer Explained" by the channel "Bookish Theories". Very informational video that breaks the song down as so much meaning is lost in translation. The song was written by "Namjoon" with V in mind, and was based on a book. What you read in the translated lyrics on youtube is often not entirely what the song is about. Most times their songs have very deep meanings that gets lost in translation, and that's where explanation videos really help get some of the nuances across. Other amazing channels that analyze and break down their lyrics and symbolisms in their music videos are "DKDKTV", "xCeleste" and "A PIECE OF KOREAN CULTURE". Yes their albums are thematic, and often in trilogies. They even have a fictional storyline that's quite complicated if you ask me.

    Your guess about the names of Koreans is correct. For Koreans, the last name comes before the first name, and the first name comes after the last name in most two syllables. Sometimes there are people with a first name of one or three syllables, but this is quite rare in Korea. Oh, very rarely, there are last names consisting of two syllables: Namgung, Hwangbo, Sunwoo, Sagong, Jegal, and Dokgo...etc. :)

  • @trollnystan
    @trollnystan Жыл бұрын

    I'm not an expert in Korean names but yes, their surname is always first and then their first name, a style I believe both Korea and Japan adopted from China waaaay back. Surnames are usually one syllable and first names are usually two, but there are exceptions. Kim is the most common surname in Korea, however there are at least four different clans with the name Kim; the Gimhae Kim clan has over 4 million members, whereas the Andong Kim clan has only 500k. Traditionally--This changed in 1997 and now people use DNA tests to make sure you're not too closely related--you could not marry a person from the same clan. When married the wife will keep her name and the children will take the father's name and clan. So in BTS we have three Kims and none of them are closely related, but Jin and Taehyung/V are in the same clan, Gwangsan Kim, while Namjoon/RM is in the Gangneung Kim clan. I hope that helped somewhat!

  • @trollnystan

    @trollnystan

    Addendum: since you enjoy languages, another thing in Korea that is still a thing I believe is generational first names, where one syllable of the name will be the same among all the siblings or even all the cousins of family. Sometimes it's gendered, but sometimes it's not. A funny coincidence in BTS is that Jimin has a brother the same age as Jungkook named Ji-hyun, and Jungkook has a brother the same age as Jimin named Jung-hyun.

    Leaders kind of have a different meaning there. Leaders basically just have extra responsibility as they have to mediate between the company and the group members and stuff. It has nothing to do with popularity or being in the center. There is actually a "center" role in BTS, and that is Jungkook, as the video suggests. If we talk about popularity, the three youngest members (Taehyung, Jimin, Jungkook) are statistically shown to be a bit more "popular" as shown from the merch sales or Google search frequencies, etc

    Idol is what KPop artists are called. They aren't called Artists, instead they are called Idols. So BTS were going to be a rap/hip hop group, and instead of that, they ended up debuting as a HIp Hop Idol group, under the KPop umbrella. Their CEO changed it. KPop is the system that creates Idols, as trainees. So if you think of KPop as a genre, it's really not that, it's more integrated content, it includes choreography, fashion, stage make-up, and music videos, it's very visually focused.

    To answer your question about the names, yes, it's similar to Japanese (and Chinese) where it's surname first. The norm is that there is 1 syllable for the surname and 2 syllables for the name, though uncommonly, there are some that are named with 1 syllable only, and even rarer are 2 syllable surnames. There are not a lot of surnames in Korea because their surnames used to derive from clan names or where your family was from (by not a lot I meant about 288~ but still, that's a lot less than western's amounts of surnames). More than half of the common surnames (Kim, Lee, Park, Choi) are used in Korea because they used to be the biggest (or ruled the longest) royal clans.

    @@DivergentReactions To me they are all young enough to be my grandchildren, possibly great grandchildren (I’m 73), so exact age doesn’t matter much. They are all under 30 with a 10 year successful career so I’m constantly in a state of admiration of their talent and skill. Youngest is about 25 and eldest is about 30 (Western age). Good enough for me. LOL
