Am I Crazy To Sell Our Off Grid Homestead? Sharing My Philosophy For Making Memories and Moving On.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this episode, I'm discussing how people think I am crazy for selling our off grid homestead. This cabin has been in our family since the 1950's but it was falling apart when I took ownership. Since then, I have done a total restoration and built a workshop, a greenhouse and gardens and it became our full time residence in 2017. After 6 wonderful years of living there, we have decided to sell it and pursue other dreams while we are still young enough to enjoy them. In this video, I share my philosophies on life and ream fulfillment.

As a wise old farmer once said to me when I was a "twenty-something" with no clue.....'Son, it is far better to wear out than to rust out'
I agree with your sentiments in this video. I am 10 years older than you, and I have lived in 8 states and a Canadian province, rehabbed many an old house, built out and lived and traveled in three vans and a tiny house on wheels, worked in corporate America, farmed, traveled across the US and Canada many times, and to other countries as well, and sold places that I loved with all my heart and moved on to other adventures. I now live over 3000 miles from where I was born. My family (what's left of them) cannot understand me at all. Most of them still live where they were born. But if I die tomorrow, I can say that I have really LIVED my life to the fullest. And it's not over yet! I wouldn't trade my life for anyone's. Keep truckin' and enjoyin'. I say. No physical property can ever be as valuable as adventure and experiences.

I'm one year short of 80 and I can attest to what you're saying. I've had a wonderful life of adventure, from one conquest to the next, some adventures more successful than others, but each an adventure none the less. I think that's why I came to love your channel. We are fellow "adventurers". Love you my friend and I'm wishing you and Lori the best in whatever adventure you get caught up in next!

Thank you my friend. I can't say I'd enjoy life much if there wasn't an adventure thrown into the mix.
Keep chasing those dreams, cause a dream won't chase you back! Blessings on all you and Lori do,
True words, true words! We get too attached to things instead of discovering new things. I remember people's reaction when I moved from Germany to the US. I was ready to do a big change again 25 years later. By then I had a husband and 3 kids and no one was willing to go along, so that dream fizzled. But should I become husbandless, I think I could just revive that dream and go with it after all. Then again: not my will but God's, shall be the final determination. Peace to you, boss!

Hello Boss! This was a great video. My situation is a little different. I had a home, and was blessed to have it for 43 years. I sold it to help financially with where I’m at. I miss my home and I love my life here also. I think its wise to own property these days. I wished I could have done that. Were living in incredible prophetic times and I just want to be as close and obedient to the Lord and Saviour so I’m not ashamed. I want others to know him and trust him with all their heart. I tell you this so that whatever decisions you need to make you go to him before action. Anyway, If say you have had a wonderful enjoyable life already and what’s left will be Gods will. As long as we are walking with him we haven’t veered off the path! Take care and God Bless always.

Bossman - I've followed your channel for many many years and I built my own cabin in the wilderness because of YOU - no kidding. Your "the power of baby steps" has shaped how I approach change and/or how I approach the quest of the things I want in my life. I will never question your decisions, your lens or your vision as you get better with every step and with every experience in every phase of your life. You're strategic and calculated but you are also fearless........I appreciate you for showing us an example of how to live life to its fullest. CHEERS to you Bossman.

Always a pleasure hearing from you, Boss. A lot of changes since The Boss Of The Swamp videos caught my eye some 11-12 years ago.... Lots of changes. I, too spent time in the woods of the Pacific Northwest in my youth living with wood heat and kerosene lighting in a A-frame bungalow. Best time of my life! I'll keep an eye open for your next installment! Cheers!
I'll be honest, i haven't seen your videos for awhile. But then i see one, then another and then i binge watch for hours, just to catch up. In all truthfulness, i love watching your channel. I also had a stroke 14 months ago boss. The second one almost killed me. But I was extremely lucky. I am in excellent condition for being 63. I believe it was God warning me to get my act together. Yes I made a lot of mistakes. And yes I eliminated all the stress. I have a second chance, and I want to live to be 96. Since my mom is 89 and is in excellent shape and she says 96 is a great number. Never looked back , keep making memories boss. I wish you and Lori all the best.

Stuff like that sure throws you a wakeup call about how fast life can change. Best of luck to you.
As a professional musician I followed your philosophy; from Carnegie Hall to Austria and great performance halls in between. But when it was over at age 70, I left it to pursue new dreams. My colleagues ask how I could leave it all behind and I replied “there’s more gas in the tank of life”. In the last 5 years I’ve built a rustic house in the Ozarks, maintain my organic garden as a Master Gardener, and fish whenever I wish. It was hard to give up conducting symphonies, playing cello in quartets, and singing Schubert lieder, just as it was hard to turn over your keys. But on to new dreams! Our tanks are emptying fast! God bless and keep you in the palm of his hand!

Don't wait to live your dreams. Make memories now. Living the life everyday!
I have a quote on the wall at our bar that states " MOTTO TO LIVE BY. Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractivve and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, margarita in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming. WHOO HOO, what a ride!" unkown author.
Hey Boss. As always, you speak wise words. I'm going to be 68 in October and I'm feeling the gas running out faster and faster. But I've lived many dreams, and I'm very lucky to have had many friends, and I certainly count you as one of them. Thank you.

Don’t worry Boss, as a old guy told me once, “old age is always 20 years from where you are right now.” I remember as a kid asking my mom how old she was. She said 36, I think, and I thought wow she is old. Now at 62, that’s pretty young.

Absolutely not! At 52 I packed up everything and moved cross country to buy land in Tennessee. Lived 2 weeks in a tent in state park after I put everything in a storage unit. Bought a small camper to live in. 6 months in a RV park until I bought land to move onto. Built 600 sq. Ft. Cabin with some help. Developed 1/2 acre garden. 20+ chickens now. Rabbits and pigs too. Did I mention I did this almost entirely on my own? No truck so had to make 10x the trips hauling lumber and supplies in my car. No well (quoted $20k last year because I'm up on a hill and wells up here between 350-700 ft. down) so packed water for 6 years until I bought 4 -275 gallon totes for water catchment. Turning 61 later this year. Hard work keeps you young but no one tells you that secret! Better get going LIVING or get going dieing!

The video isn't loading for me yet so I haven't seen it yet. Sight unseen, I agree wth anything that elevates you further. We sold OUR 'forever homestead' 2.5 years ago, because the value of it doubled in the pandemic, and _no matter how much we liked that homestead_ , we were looking at 150K in CASH for selling our HOMEstead, and were able to go buy us a LANDstead. 40 solid wooded acres of East Texas glory!! 😂 We've never had a damn thing in our lives... she's a widow at 32 with 3 small children and I'm a poor old abused child who became a multiple ex con. But we were able to get us SOMETHING.. a Suburban Homestead! But then... the OPPORTUNITY arose and we struck while the iron was hot. We were blessed to be able to buy a home to raise the kids in, and we also seen the blessing opportunity arise when the homes value doubled in 7 years. Take that which is offered! Life's too short lol

A great video, "Make Beautiful Memories" came into my mind years ago and I wrote that phrase down. At the time I was a single mom with two children born with Cystic Fibrosis. Life expectancy was 12 years when they were born. I knew I had God in my life, without Him I wouldn't have made it. He was my keeper. I told my children that their life wasn't determined by a disease. My daughter lived to be almost 24 yrs. old. My son lived to be 38 1/2 yrs.old and married for over 13 yrs. Boss, you look so much like my son. You could pass as brothers He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. I chose to let them live life. I tried to " Make Beautiful Memories". Keep. Making those Memories each day. Blessings to you.

That my friends … was a FABULOUS video!!! I’m officially 100% moved in with the folks now. They watch this one with me. Now we keep asking my father if he has enough gas left in the tank. He says he does. An hour latter decides he doesn’t. *Putt Putt* He’s stalling. So my recommendation is “JUST DO IT”!!! Liquidate what you need too (keep one) and do the road trip of your lives and most of all have fun!!!

Being in my mid 60's I know your words about life are very true. I've been trying for almost 6 years to complete my dreams. But I seem to keep being kicked in the teeth every time I try to move forward. But I won't give up. I want to return to the deep country with a few acres to build my own (final) cabin and finish my life like I started it many years ago. With my own garden, and fruit orchard, and farm animals being raised for food. And watching all that happens on the homestead from up close & personal. By putting it in my hands and molding it my way. I just want to go back to the simple days. when I was the happiest.

As a guy a year younger than you, kids grown up and moved away, parents just passed in the last 8 months, property in Miami and western North Carolina I can definitely feel the parallels. I have never spent more time than 2 weeks here and there in the mountains but can feel the desire to be up there sitting on my front steps listening to the creek rushing by. We leave in Oct for our first 3 weeks stay and have a big family reunion planned for July next year up there. The desire to drag up and go there is growing. As my buddy says to me often "I feel ya"

Im 65 and retiring december 31st, 2023. Ive done the cabin thing, sold it and paid off my house on seven acres with a thousand foot stream, a hundred blueberry bushes, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. I live one mile from one of the small finger lakes and minutes from two others. Electric has gone up to $40. A month cause im frugal with it. Tons of firewood free for the cutting. Dear, bear, turkeys, fisher cats and mink. Only a mile from town. This is where ill stay ..for now. But there are old people i met in my early twenties that I've never forgotten because of the hours and hiurs i spent with them talking about when they built the AlCan highway and TVA in Tennessee and the civil war battles that took place on their property. Memories sre great but even better when you share them with the young people who love the stories as much as you enjoyed living them.
You are so right!!! ❤ It's always wonderful to see your videos.. ..Blessings to your future endeavors Boss! ❤
My next birthday I'll be 80, if I make it. My bucket for my "Bucket List", is still more than half filled. It will never be empty. I have come to realize that the "Good Old Days" were back when you could do things. I have so many things that need to be done, and I can no longer do them ! Do what you can while you can ! Enjoyed the video. Thanks.

My wife 2 yrs ago had heart attack and had to have open heart surgery and three arterys replaced bypasses surgery done. All six of our kids are grown. Hi again BOSS Oh the memories! Soo happy to comment today as I'm able. Been following as always but some really tough health stuff has made that part impossible. Still after so many years bottom line I've had to just know you've been ok. That rough health time you had wasn't a fun memory for sure but how you keep moving forward I've never forgotten and has immeasurable help for me to do the same. Many thx for that my friend. So another ending and new beginning for you two is once again exciting. Change is a great thing but feared by many yet if tried great fun in all life's new discovery and making those memories of which you spoke. I hope to keep on track with your journey as always and look forward to your new chapter. My heart just smiles as you've kept your blog ending with you and Frankie. You had so many responses and I knew mine probably would get lost in many but know it's there as I couldn't let that go even though I was in rough shape at the time. We had shared our dog stories many times and Frankie had soo been a beloved fellow especially at the time I had lost mine and got that new little gal Oh my!! Oh the memories... Continue on my friend til the gas runs out. I'm trying to use up mine too lol. Enjoy every minute of all the new times ahead. God bless
