Building an Affordable Off-Grid Homestead | PARAGRAPHIC

Starting a homestead and living off the grid can be achieved with as much, or as little as you have. In fact, it's much more about your attitude and mindset than having a lot of expensive equipment. After all, there's no one-size-fits-all approach so it's about finding the elements that work for you. John went off grid his own way and has found joy, peace, and satisfaction living on his own in the high desert.

I relate to this guy a lot. I am 42, lived alone my whole life, I now have my own little cabin in the forest away from most of society. I loved the line, " I am just a peaceful man, I want to be left alone, I enjoy my solitude" This is me, to a T. It's a great life, and enjoying it is what it's all about. At the end of the day all I need is food and water with a warm safe place to live. Just supplying myself with those things is a full time job. I also have found a way to make more money working for myself from my homestead than I ever did working in society. I started this life 4 years ago and wish I did it sooner. Never even touched a chicken before and last season I incubated my own eggs and raised the entire flock for meat. I did all the processing by myself in the forest. It's a huge accomplishment and something I am extremely proud of, I am still a long ways from self sufficiency but it's a start and I am truly happier doing this than anything else in my life.

That’s my goal!!! Last year I purchased 40+ acres not far from this guy “frugal off grid” for the purpose of moving off grid soon… then I got pregnant lol.. obviously slowed some things down but that’s my plan sooner or later once my older kids move out etc. meanwhile I’ll be working slowly on my property.

Good job! I would much rather watch your channel than a bunch of cutesy 'tiny house' living single women (who are all independently wealthy in case it gets hard!) who walk around flowery meadows with their border collies called Berkeley and Chaz, making sure you see all the cute shots of their dogs lying in front of a wood burning appliance...You took on a challenge, bro! I did the same but not nearly as risky. I'm in a small Nebraska village in the drought zone (10 years now, they say). We are out in the boonies, too, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Great video quality, btw.

It's not crazy. We falsely believe that life is only possible on lush green pasture lands and cities with slabs of concrete. It might be easier in a city or a rural area. But at what cost? Life is possible everywhere. We need to get out there and start colonizing more land

"even if I'm sick as a dog, I still have to go out there and do the work" that's why truly sustainable living is not only going off-grid, but also building community and recuperating a notion of solidarity and collectivism.

Love your story here. Challenges of being frugal, even when don't need to, are actually rewarding. I'm learning what plants to forage, make tinctures, oils, ferments, dandelion jelly and such. Makes sense to go to stores less often when much of what I need is just outdoors.

Hello :) I have a video suggestion.. There is a lot of talk of what you can and cannot do living off grid in AZ. Some say the county has gotten stricter and tells you septic before you can even move in, and need a permit to live in your RV, and need a permit for your solar, and a permit for discharging grey water. But yet here you are doing exactly what a lot of us want to accomplish. So maybe a video touching on the topic of what you can do and your experiences with the county. Great job on your accomplishments.

I love this guy, all of his videos. But this one really made me think I am already established on a house with land, but I am too close to the city for comfort, and I am on a well agreement, which is basically an HOA and I hate it. I think I am going to save up to buy land with cash and just start working on it here in there and then move out there when I am ready to make income outside of the city. I might even be able to do it in a rural community with my profession, but it’s few and far between.
