Am I an LGBT Ally? (A Libertarian perspective)

During LGBT History Month, I've been attending various social and educational events with colleagues from work. When they found out I wasn't gay, they labelled me an "LGBT ally". However, that description doesn't sit well with me, because of what I perceive to be the expectations they have for LGBTQ+ allies (aka "the gender-sexuality alliance"). And I wanted to explain why I don't like that label. I have a better label for myself instead...

I'm libertarian myself. I understand the total need for self ownership and self identity. Good on you. 😀

Spot on.. as a libertarian I don’t consider myself an ally or an enemy. Both sides have authoritarian tendencies. I simply don’t care what people do with their lives as long as they are not hurting anyone it’s not my business.

Respectfully, I disagree. Violence and coercion of the state are often against some minority group or groups that others have prejudice and bigotry towards. If we take nazi Germany, then it’s quite clear that bigotry and prejudice of Jewish people, gay and trans people, and black people made it possibly for that kind of government to be elected. The ideas, practices, or projects of anti-sexism, anti-antisemitism, and anti racism would be logically compatible with libertarianism, their success might be important or even necessary for libertarianism to get much purchase in an existing statist society, or for a future free society to emerge from statism without widespread poverty or social conflict, or for a future free society to sustain itself against aggressive statist neighbors, the threat of civil war, or an internal collapse back into statism. It seems that a tolerant, anti-prejudice, reasoning culture is a very strong causal precondition to establish classical liberalism or libertarianism in politics. (Edit): If we oppose traditional sexism, cissexism, heterosexism, oppositional sexism, etc. (opposing them through reasonable boycotts, complaints, protests, conversations, debates, or discussions, not coercively) then a society would not influence or cause political that violates the rights of woman, homosexual people, or transsexual and transgender people. If we oppose classism, whether it is directed at the lower, middle, or upper classes, then the culture won’t endorse the political schemes wherein we try to, violently and coercively, give a lot of money from the rich to the poor, or give a lot of money from the poor and middle class and give it to the rich, in the form of corporate welfare. If we oppose racism and antisemitism, the society would not tolerate, permit, or engage political interests that engage in violence against any person or color or white person on the basis of their race. I think actively protesting and opposing (non-violently and non-coercively) sexism, racism, classism, or any other hatred, bigotry, or prejudice is a very helpful for society to put forward and accept laws and policies that are nonviolent.

I did 30 years in the Army for you to have freedom of speech and opinions which you hold which I disagree with. I will have a logical argument with you over a lemonade on your beliefs. I joined to protect your rights as a citizen of the Queen.

Freedom of speech, the freedom to express opinions, is the first and foremost freedom. It's so valuable that we should all be willing to fight for it, in whatever capacity we can. Some will do so with arms. Others through political struggles. All are to be applauded for doing so. And I would welcome the opportunity to have a conversation. Hopefully, you will be putting out some videos of your own on the subject. I'm sure you have valuable and interesting insights to share.
