    My only experience and funny story with aluminum stick welding was when I was in welding school we had to pass a stick aluminum test. Our instructor would tell us to give it a go and we would lay down absolute garbage and take it to him to look at. All he said was “Do you ever wanna do that again?” I was like “hell no!” He just laughed and said okay you passed the test! 😂👍

    I first stick welded aluminum just to try it. After the first crappy beads I preheated only the first 2 inches and beveled the 1/4" plate, it came out a lot better. Fun to try.

    I've used aluminum stick rods off of my 1977 Miller Big20 to repair 18 wheeler truck diesel tanks and aluminum boats and i had to fight it every time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this overlooked topic of aluminum stick rods! It's going to make my life a lot easier! Mr. Zila is absolutely right about heat input and not being married to specific amperage settings. Heat is your friend when is comes to aluminum! Don't be afraid to crank up the amps. It looks like some equipment upgrades are in my future.

    Great video and excellent presentation! Note: If you want to preserve the electrodes after opening the container, you can seal them back up in a plastic bag to prevent moisture from dissolving the coating. These electrodes can also be used in brazing applications and also as a tig rod when the flux coating is removed. The MG 405 is a 4047 wire.

    Yes, pulsing SMAW seems be the best help with super difficult electrodes/non-ferrous metals like aluminum. For many years DC+ and hi-frequency superimposed helps improve results. Great video , shows SMAW comes to the rescue of MIG and TIG outside in the field.

    Skippity Do Da na na na .... i mean its very nice for you to say that. But i can tell you, almost 43 y/o need reading glasses under my hood to weld low amp tig .... and didnt learn stick welding till i was 32 (one year after i started my own welding business 😳) all the guys at weldtube can stick weld circles around me without even breaking a sweat ! Seriously. And tig? I used to be pretty awesome in my 20’s and early 30’s but again, welding with real pros here ... man - i had a lot of rust to shake off ..... Now mig and pulse mig .... i do a lot of lately - i like to think i can hold my own on mig .... its all a matter of what you do and how much of it you do .... i have a passion for welding ans i do a lot of odd ball stuff like castings or oily scrapyard stuff.... and there is a ton of guys out there who can do all this and there is plenty of guys who i can teach something but there are plenty of guys who can teach me something .... the only difference is those really good guys - they work so hard in the trenches all day and we just dont see them on youtube ..... that does not mean that there are no good guys out there it just means 90%+ of those guys we dont “see” Thanks for the compliment though!

    How has the process affected the temper of the aluminum? Biggest concern I have with aluminum in general is not ending up with soft joints that will break if the design of the thing doesn't account for that softness.

  • @ZILAwelds

    @ZILAwelds

    4 жыл бұрын

    TWX1138 any aluminum that you weld looses all the heat treat AND the artificial aging As a rule of thumb EVERY aluminum welding process mig, tig or stick will loose ( depends on what grade aluminum you started with ) at least 50% but possible as much as 70%+ of its original strength. 6061 T651 for example looses about 70% tensile strength in close proximity to the weld ( 1/4”-1” away from the weld) Typically engineers account for that when building things. If you fix an aluminum casting by welding it - it needs to back to the heat treating shop and pull all the temper out and re heat treat the entire piece.

  • @garykish8951

    @garykish8951

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ZILAwelds Holy Shit! I didn't know it lost THAT much strength. What did/do they do it when building aluminum frames for race cars like the old Lola T70's? Is the whole frame heated treated to regain it's strength?

  • @ZILAwelds

    @ZILAwelds

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@garykish8951 re heat treating can be an option depending on the size, shape and the kind of alloy used. Some aluminum tubing looses more than others for example if you build a frame from 6061 tubing (round, rectangular or square tubing) you loose a ton of strength when you weld on it. 6063 tubing on the other hand (which is less strong to begin with that 6061 , looks, feels, tastes the same ...LOL. it will be stronger than 6061 after you welded on both - so if you dont heat treat you need to look at the level of strength the material has AFTER you welded on it .... also the design, (size and configuration of the welded joint, placement of the welds, ..... all this is figured in by some engineer who should understand how that works .... with aluminum I try to stick exactly to the engineering specs and not "over weld" the joints because the more you weld - the more temper you destroy .... you have to be careful and should somewhat know what you are doing if you weld aluminum and strength is critical .... its not "easy" and you have to have the right filler material of course .... you cant just weld aluminum .... and if you have some sheets lets say 1/8" thick and you tig weld them - you cant just take your tin snips and just a little strip off one sheet and use that as filler .... aluminum in general (without going into all details) dont like "fusion tig weld" or using same alloy filler tig welds. they need "dissimilar" aluminum alloys to work - but they have to be the "right ones" ..... I have a few videos on my channel on some of that topic .... one of the videos has a link to a 72 page Lincoln Electric publication that is a VERY good resource.

  • @garykish8951

    @garykish8951

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ZILAwelds Wow! Never knew the loses were so high. I wonder if that's why you hear of failure on race cars with the welds/joints failing. I can see why steel tube frames are so much more common with the old V8 mid-engine kit cars like the Manta or Marauder.

  • @ZILAwelds

    @ZILAwelds

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@garykish8951 the tube chassis on race cars are typically chrome moly tubing. all tig welded ... but some guys use the wrong filler or too much heat and that changes the temper of that tubing as well .... hard to say .... aluminum has another MAJOR problem .... I made a video making a bicycle and kayak rack on the back of a 5th wheel camper trailer ..... and some guys said in the comments : that. is way to heat you should have mede it from aluminum ..... the issue with that is I used "very light" 1/8" wall steel stuff .... the nice thing about steel is it can flex back and forth for " a million times" (within it flexible range where it does not take a permanent set and deforms) and still maintain it integrity ..... aluminum on the other had - although it flexes too ..... it has a memory .... although you dont flex or bend it enough to take a permanent set and deform it develops fatigue and stress cracks .... steel has that to to a degree (it's typically referred to as "work harden") but on aluminum this effect is MUCH more pronounced and a real risk ..... aluminum is not good for anything that is subject to permanent back and forth defection ... living in Wisconsin I see a bunch of little aluminum landscape and snowmobil trailers .... (some boat and Jetski trailers too). and because people dont want to haul a heavy trailer behind their little suv and because they dont want to deal with rusty trailers they buy aluminum trailers ..... and that is about the biggest mistake you can make .... why? because they are not anodized and the salty roads eat them alive !!!! and even if a guy only uses them in the summer - they are all cracked !!!!! and then a guy comes and welds it - and although the weld takes some temper and strength out .... the guy who welds it says: weld is better than a crack and I guess he is right but it has now 50-30% of its original strength ..... so what happens is : if the trailer lasted 3,4 or maybe even 5 years before it cracked for the first time ..... your repair weld job will be cracked again in a year from now because the strength is simply not there ..... also when you over load aluminum trailers vs steel trailers - not good - they crack so fast !!!!! so the recipe for making good aluminum trailers - you have to do it like featherlite. when they build a 3 car hauler wedge trailer to go on a pick up. the thing is "fully enclosed" on the bottom (tool boxes build in) with gives it a TON of rigidity - you want the trailer to be "as stiff as you can" so it does not twist and flex (because as we learned - that is why they fail. also you dont want it to be "fully welded" or "over welded" ..... you need to make sure it welded "just enough" in "all the right areas" if you weld it too much it is counter productive and weakens it .... then anodize the thing - so slat water does not do a number on it ..... then you might have a chance ..... I personally still would weigh out my options buying one .... payload is higher, fuel consumption in lower, towing is easier, BUT initial purchase price is much higher and life span of a comparable steel unit is longer than the aluminum unit ..... once it starts cracking. - weld'r up and sell'r as fast as you can ... ! LOL. but I am happy they make aluminum trailers ... something needs to pay my bills and put food on my family's table ..... so you won't hear me talk shit .... and if you "run your business right and you need the trailer every day and it Raif for itself in a year and after 5 you sell it to throw it away .... (who wants to keep a trailer for 10 or 20 years ? and repaint it every 5 ....). then it could be a great move for you to buy one ....

    All fine, BUT ! If "Stel invented pulse stick in 2005" then how is it possible that my old welder from Denmark from 1996 has pulse stick mode with adjustable pulse time and pulse frequency up to a 1000Hz ? Amongst other like inductance, hot start, arc force and the ballance between pulse current and the background current.

    Mark Masterson well. They formulated 50% pulse on time 50% background and with enough arc dynamic to run 6010 and citoflex rods .... they were the first to officially introduce this and make it popular that the 2005 welding show is ESSEN ( germany)

    I was in the tanker repair industry even with tig welding,fixing a leak where you have pinch points and the weap hole won't allow pressure relief how do you compensate? I have struggled with it many times the only solution to save cost is to drill more weap holes and when the guy who's gotta fix that shit gets tired of arguing with you, buy another tanker or fix the roads or the parking lot so that shit don't cause a fight

    Mike Kerezsi on most tankers i do mig or pulse mig. Sandblast the area with the pinhole, weld the pinhole, than put a good size “patch” over it 4” a 6” and weld that leak tight over your repair spot. At least that system always did it for me.
