    Flow-drilling is great, but you didn't mention one reason they use it: since there is no pre-drilled hole, the parts can be assembled by flow-drilling even if they are not really lined up properly. Lining body parts up correctly has never been Ford's strength.

    It appears that the chief difference between Flow Drill Screw and a self-tapping screw is that the latter needs a pilot hole through all pieces. However, is the FDS removable, or does the plastic deformation of the metal lock the screw permanently in place?

  • @patreekotime4578

    @patreekotime4578

    They said it was removeable. My impression was that the heat in the FDS deforms the material more than a self tapping screw would. But that it is not enough heat and pressure to forge weld the screws into place.

    I've been watching coverage of the F-150 lightning since it was just speculation years ago, and at 4:49 is the FIRST TIME anyone ever mentioned that Ford kept the aluminium design for this new model. If anyone can show me a mention from Munro or any other site of alu for this body, I'll eat my words. It's like everyone was supposed to just assume the material was unchanged, in a model year that's a very radical departure from the past. I bet what happened is Ford stopped playing up the body material as a differentiating advantage, and all the lackey influencers forgot that it was even worth mentioning.

    Great job guys. Shows that Ford did a good job of converting the ICE F150 into the Lightning and by keeping the frame and aluminium body were able to keep costs within limits. I am impressed that the Lightning is 550 lbs lighter than the Rivian. One might expect a blank sheet design would be lighter than a conversion, but not in this case. Like almost every other commenter, you keep saying that the F-150 is the highest-volume vehicle in North America... but the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are just two different trim levels and badging of one vehicle model, which typically about the same volume as the F-150. Combined Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup volume over the whole range (1500 to 3500) is again similar to Ford F-Series pickup volume over the corresponding range (F-150 to F-450). Ford and GM are the leaders in this segment, not just Ford.

Also how are you going to mount a service cab on a GIGACAST ? These mount to the frame, think plumber, electrician and other trades people. Energy from load in the bed and also frame while towing being dampened by the system has a ton of benefits, while you can make a body strong enough to handle the load, you be an SUV with a bed. Like the chevy avalanche. There is a reason chevy sold a fraction of avalanches compared to Silverado. When you think about bed replacement and industry specific use of truck, this is the better platform. For weekend users yes you can do unibody or SUV with a bed, something like avalanche. imho although Ford is trying, the 3 really big things that will stop mass market takeup are 1) the dealer markups on the all Fords putting people off buying a Ford .2)the scaleability of production of the BEV versions, if they can build them they should be able to sell them,3) the big elephant in the room is the parts supply eg "the blue ford oval", i watched a yt video where someone was parked @ a ex motor racing circuit & Ford had over 40,000 parked up due to lack of parts "badges/chips" until that problem is sold everyone that comes off the line missing parts is unsaleable and effectivately a "used vehicle" even before it gets to a stealership, unlike Tesla where every car that comes off the line is sold & complete and heading onwards to its owner, a company the age/size of Ford should have mastered vertical intergration @ least 30 years ago not now fighting to get "badges", if Jim is not careful the cybertruck hitting production and delieveries will kill the Ford/GM pickup marketshare in less than 3 years, a bit like the old saying"if you make it they will buy it" considering Ford/GMs state of fianances any delay in selling to the public(not the dealers) is only going to worsen there bottom line,i mean 40k plus stood vehicles for a $5 badge ??, the one thing Ford should have definately been making in house supremly bad decision to outsource the amount of parts they do,so many factors beyond Fords control that will cost them dearly from parts to stealerships, sad very sad, Henry must be spinning in his grave :(

  • @kingduckford
    @kingduckford Жыл бұрын

    Its almost laughable how you expound the virtue of "more payload capacity" when in truth Ford was approaching worthlessness in terms of "modern standard" F150 packages without the use of aluminum. Looking through some of the specifications over the years, there was a time a decade ago when "modern standard" crew cab F150's had a total payload of less than 1,000 pounds, with that sub 1,000 pound payload including the driver. In truth, any half ton truck. light duty or heavy duty for its class, should have a payload closer to 1,250 pounds excluding the driver in that figure. The trucks were becoming nearly useless, and were being made only for being used as cars with a towing ability. Hell, load up six full sized men in those packages, and you were exceeding the worthless GVWR of those packages. The push to make half ton trucks crew cabs and treated as cars rather than trucks was creating a minor crisis. Crew cabs are much heavier than regular cabs, and the modern 6 and 10 speed transmissions and all the extra weight was essentially making them too heavy for their intended purpose. The most worthless half tons ever produced were the crew cab steel body trucks of that era. Pure garbage. The aluminum body isn't adding to the half ton truck, rather they are absolutely necessary for the half ton truck to work in the backwards configuration they want. You can't get a real crew cab half ton unless you find a way to cut off about 700-800 pounds. So, that's what they did. And always seeing everyone in the modern era ignore GVWR and payloadd, and instantly go back to "tow rating". Because every light duty truck going forward is a short bed and everything will be towed, right?

    But Giga casting. Troll Tesla sycophant. You don’t like it, ok, but it’s not irrelevant. I would argue against EVs in general as an only car or truck unless you commute specifically point a to b, and live and travel where you have reliable charging. As a truck for towing, or as a vehicle for long distance beyond the novelty of charging inadequacies, like when time matters, no bueno. I rarely see Tesla’s traveling faster than the speed limit.
