    TD thank you for the great review. My LP 4.5 died this weekend. I originally picked up a pair of Olympus, and found I wanted the lower stack so I returned them & picked up the LP 6. I appreciate the input on energy return. If I remember I’ll update as I use mine!

    MaxTrak is definitely rubbish in wet conditions. Even on wet pavement it’s terrible. I just upgraded to Olympus today for the Vibram from the Superior. I’m waiting to test my Mont Blancs until my husband’s arrive. Pretty excited about the light shoe, but very good points on the lack of protection in the toe.

    I find them true to size, and wear them in the same size as my other Altras. At first glance, it looks a little narrow (like the Rivera) but after a few runs it can definitely be worn by people with slightly wider feet. They're just not as curved/clown shoe shaped like most other Altras.

    I love the LP5, its so comfy. But the outsole needs a massive revamp as the grip is useless in any form of mud. I really wish they did a soft ground version for with real deep lugs for muddy conditoins, that would be perfect. Shoes that do grip well in mud are Inov-8 Mudclaw, X Talons and Hoka Evo Jawz. Great shoes for muddy conditions. Nice review.

    "Don't shoot the messenger" 😆 I'm disappointed in the fit based on what you're describing. When I saw it had a Vibram outsole I was STOKED because, like you, I really don't like the MaxTrac. But it sounds like the fit probably wouldn't work for me. Since you have both the Timps and the Lone Peaks, would you say the Mont Blanc is in the middle between those, or really more like the fit of the Timp? I ask because the Timps hurt my feet because of the toe box fit, so if that's what the Mont Blanc feels like then it's a no-go for me. Thanks for sharing your first impressions!

    Seth demoor had a tear in his lp6 upper after less than 50 miles. Right where the toe box creases. It seems they cannot get out from under their poor trail shoe durability. Throw in the fact that their outsole rubber can be dangerously unpredictable and they still have some major issues to work out. I still keep my Saucony trail shoes for those wet/sloppy days because the altras are useless and better left at home. This is pretty much the one thing keeping me from being able to be exclusive to Altra. I get that the Rivera's are "slim fit" but I find the timp 2 to be WAY more snug than the Rivera. In addition, my riveras fit very long. I could've easily sized down a half and probably a full size. It's a very baggy fit. All of that being said, I just got the escalante racer and although I only have less than 30 miles in them, I have a 10 mile effort, a few "recovery" paced 4-5 milers and a max effort 10k. The escalante racer is the best shoe I have ever run in from any brand. Now I need to find it's trail companion. Sorry for getting wordy there! I just wish I could rely on Altra as I LOVE the fit and the effect they have on my entire physical health.

  • @TDMiller

    @TDMiller

    As I saw Seth run in the Lone Peak 6 on a treadmill and the way he janks on the tongues putting his shoes on, I'm not sure what to think of his reviews nowadays. Don't get me wrong - he knows a lot about shoes! And we can learn a lot of what he has to share with us. Altra definitely has a bad rep with durability - I've personally never had any issues, so I cannot confirm, but I've heard many many stories. Have you ever tried running in the shoes without the insole? Altra designs their shoes to also be worn without the insole, so this can give the runner more space. No worries about leaving long comments - I love hearing from other runners and talking about Altras! I try to include stories just like yours in my reviews to give the viewer a wider opinion, and not just my personal opinion. :-)

  • @robertmorano2372

    @@TDMiller I have tried running in my riveras without the insole. at about 200 miles, I started to get a blister on the inside of my left foot arch on anything over 5 miles or so. At first I thought that it would solve the issue but with no luck. I've been trying different insoles in hopes of at least getting enough miles out of them to be satisfied with my purchase. I even emailed altra about the sizing of the riveras and how every review I saw or read suggesting maybe sizing up a half size (I ordered my normal size that I wear in everything, including superiors, timps, and now the escalante racer and other brands as well) and how mine absolutely fit at least one full size large. I asked them if I were to purchase another rivera or wait for the rivera 2, if the sizing would be about the same, or should I try a full size down. They told me maybe try the escalante. I do like the rivera for certain things although it is way too soft for what I wanted it to be and it looks like the upper in version 2 might have some improvements to help mitigate that "baggy" fit. Not to mention I'm really attracted to that colorway you posted the other day with the olive green midsole foam. Either way, I'm at the point with my rivera's of just getting enough miles out of them so I can justify buying another pair of escalante racers, which I'm now obsessed with and would love to see a trail companion to, it even though I saw altra is probably discontinuing the racer. If only the superior was a little bit firmer and would grip. I know people say to just get the olympus, but I don't want the olympus. I want a minimal, "stiffer" faster trail shoe that grips like my peregrines. We see a lot of gnarly, wet, very technical trail conditions here in the hudson valley region of New York and I need a trail shoe that inspires confidence as you move through terrain. And not always wondering "is this the step where I might need to change my shorts" (or worse). Again, I'm blabbering now. Thanks for the reply.

    I’m concerned about the width of the Mont Blancs too. I get the idea of racing/performance fits being more narrow in road running contexts, but for ultra running it feels backwards. I expect my feet will expand over the 5+ hours I’m out there so I definitely don’t want a slim shoe

Paradigm is very soft, maybe even too soft. I don't know if it's a good choice for asphalt running. Besides, I don't know if the size 43 is too small. It seems good, but I don't have a lot of free space in my fingers. Very similar feeling to other brands of running shoes in size 43, or even slightly less space in length.
