Alternator noise you CANT get rid of? Maybe it's this..

Super common reason for alt noise that doesnt go away no matter what you try. Sometimes your amps just arent good with each other!

Thanks mate. Gonna put this in a "sticky" thread on some car audio forums. It'll save heaps of time trying to type out answers to the hundreds of people who comment or start a thread about having "alternator white" or other "Noise" in their system. 👍 It's also worth noting that in general, most budget or mid tier level amplifiers will have a common ground on the inputs and power supply, while most upper tier or premium amplifiers will have isolated or "differential" inputs, which function as "common mode rejection" inputs that are somewhat *similar* to a true "balanced" input...i.e. 3-conductor XLR or TRS on pro audio equipment.

I did the janking thing in the old days over 20 years ago and nobody I talked too new this , but the ground loop isolator I used dropped the noise floor at least 10 db and I had to turn the gains up to get the same output this would have been very useful, is very useful 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Bizarre because the Rockford should NOT have a common RCA ground. They used the TOPAZ system which was a quasi differential input and referenced to the secondary side of the transformer. Wonder if it’s been modified.

Yea I thought that was odd as well. I actually used one of rockford's really old schematics to design a differential input circuit for one of my projects.

That's strange! The PSU always separates the primary from the secondary side. Only the 80s Amps had no seperation. I don't know any amp which has a ground connection from the power ground to the RCAs nowadays. Maybe a high resistant. The ground should always come over the RCA cables from the headunit. That's also the reason, why barevids scope signals look so noisy. He has grounded his scope to power gnd and has a bad connection to signal gnd. Here, it would make sense to connect both grounds together.

I just checked the schematic and yes - the RCA ground as well as the entire preamp stage is connected to “I GND” which is NOT tied to Chassis GND. Sorry to say this problem was not repaired correctly.

Lots of times the ground wraps on the head unit are on Pioneer units which run pico fuses on the RCAs. People will plug and unplug the RCAs under power and it will pop those fuses. Enter the ground wrap.

I remember back in the early 80s some factory gm trucks came with ground isolators on factory head units, they do seem janky but them things get the job done in a big way, especially with brush 1 wire alternators, those things make noise like Chewbacca...😂

I set my HU up to 20 for max volume but at 20 has only 0,7volt on rca so i set gain amplifier up as a result a lot of noise.. so i put my HU at 50 for max clean signal 1,6 volt and turned down amp gain after that sound was clean... im speaking for mids and tweeters.... so if u want quality buy 4-5v HUs

I’m wondering if this is the issue I’m having. I think I may have loosened one of the rca cables on the back of my head unit maybe? It makes the alternator whine as I increase in rpm, my last amp which was a Jensen xda94rb, didn’t make the noise, but I installed an XPR540 and re did my entire ground wire and power wire setup from the battery with a new inline fuse and when I hooked it all up to go it made the alternator whine which increased with rpm. My solutions currently were option 3 which I plan to try or to re do my ground all together, maybe even just check the back of my head unit and just make sure my rca’s aren’t loose?

Hey Sam, I don't know if you will get to this, but I will thank you in advance if you do. I have an MB Quart formula FA1900.5. I'm pretty sure the power supply mofsets blew, I'm pretty sure the amp got too hot. But anyway, where do you get the parts to fix it? I've been all over Google, and I can't seem to come across the site that sells that stuff. The number on the MOSFETs is 80N08A. And I've googled them a hundred times and I can't seem to find those things anywhere. If you can help, that's awesome. And if you can't, I get it. I still watch your channel, still enjoy you repair an amps. You got a great channel brother.

Our Honda Civic 2008 started releasing this very low volume, high frequency sound that increase as the gas pedal is pressed. When the stereo volume is fully off, the sound goes away. But, as soon as volume is put on 1 that sound comes back. The sound started with stock audio system and speakers. Maybe you can help? Thank you.
