The book this is based on, also called Altered Carbon, won at least 3 awards, including the Arthur C. Clarke award. This isn't a Ghost in the Shell or Blade Runner mimic. Those things may be influences, but that's allowed. It's cyberpunk noir, there is a certain visual/conceptual language involved.

this show is based on the book which is exactly about an asian man transferring into other bodies of diff. races, but thats not even the point of the books, the books are about the world and other stuff the MC gets roped into.

violetcrumble94 it's derivative in the same way Dredd is derivative of Blade Runner, or Ghost in the Shell is derivative. VISUALLY there are similarities -- high tech stuff, flying cars, smog, fight scenes -- beyond that the actual story is not derivative at all.

I'd say yes. Even from this 3 minute trailer I can tell that the main theme's of the book are there. As far as Grace's point: how many people have the luxury of driving a different car every day if they choose? Can't say more without spoiling it. Read the book!

Cool!, I definitely will. What frustrated me about what Grace said, is she is commenting on a trailer without doing any research on what it's based on. "oh no, now they're white washing again!, didn't they watch GITS!". But if it's based on a book that has all of those ideas..what should they do..change the story because all the ideas that are in the book are apparently no longer new anymore?..sounds ridiculous to me.

Yeah, obviously I like Grace's channel and reviews; but she sees movies from an industry point of view and always thinks about the box office first. Personally, I'm more interested in the story, acting, cinematography, etc... This was a great book, and can't wait to see the show.

more and more grace says the most negative non sense without even knowing the source material etc, to say this is a copy is like saying any movie set in a dystopian future is copying which is just ridiculous. I really used to love her reviews even when I didnt agree but lately it feels like she is trying to be funny or say things for shock value bc her reviews just feel so negative and that would be ok if she supported it with intelligent reasons, not the BS she is spewing these days.

Nothing problematic about race changing Grace. In the book, he changed from asian to caucasian because that's the entire point. Race is irrelevant when the person in the sleeve could be anyone. In later books he changes into a black sleeve and then in another book he's in an asian sleeve. The problem with GitS was that the original main character was Japanese and they changed it to a white person. Now the interesting question is if there will be a different actor each season or if they will keep Kinnaman throughout.

And what Grace talks about actually sort of happens in the books as well - while the rich have multiple clones they can switch to, people can and do switch into synthetic bodies built for different purposes. The show seems to be dropping the space travel aspect though, where people are transmitted to other worlds at light speed and downloaded into local bodies, so you can move around the solar system in minutes.

It has nothing to do with Ghost in the Shell. That is a comic book/anime. The book is a novel and a very complex one and a series with other 2 books. The story is much more complex than the Ghost in the Shell's, the main character too. Check it out before saying something. This book is one of the best, not just a popular comic in the west...

I'm just halfway through the original book. I don't think this has anything to do with whitewashing in GITS. In the book ethnicity is not irrelevant... But it's just different. Takeshi Kovacs is supposed to be half Japanese and half Polish, from a planet colonized by that joint effort. He seems to be going to be played by different actors in flashbacks and the present. There are planets colonized by the Vatican, by Islamic countries... And this happens mostly on Earth. The sleeve Tak is wearing belonged to a particular person, so it wouldn't make sense for it to fit his ethnicity. He's also used female sleeves. I don't know if he uses the same sleeve in the sequels. If Tak is that sleeve fluid... He should me played by many more actors. I personally think it can be very original if done right.

I loved the story of the first novel. The second and third are also really good but the first was the best. They should have used Kinnaman's voice as narration and then they could have cycled different actors/actresses in over several seasons. That would have been ace as Kinnaman has a good narration voice.

The "small screen" is really surpassing movies these days in about every which way possible (it has for years now) and stuff like "Game Of Thrones" and now "Altered Carbon" are proof positive of that very thing. I can't wait to see what Anthony Mackie will do with the role as the new lead in the second season! I also love the fact that the pilot was directed by Miguel Sapochnick who did an amazing job directing several episodes of "Game Of Thrones" as well! I hope he comes back for the second season as well!

And it is equally applicable to GitS, but of course people prefer to call it whitewashing, even though in GitS it was explained that Caucasian was the latest model (implying the previous wasn't) and Matoko looks ambiguous anyways.

*I think there's something to be said for doing a thing well* Hi Grace, so you commented on how this seems to be really derivative of a lot of other cyberpunk and sci-fi works. While I would agree, a lot of people were pretty disappointed in those versions. So I think theirs some merit in trying to make a high-quality product. Now, this could turn out to be bad, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now.

dendariiprime came here to say just that. Pontificating without a shred of actual information save the trailer. The book was an amazing debut for the author and received rave reviews. Next time spend a few minutes doing some research instead of spinning your wheels.

The novel (series of novels) are excellent. I wish they didn't make it into a TV show though because how Blade Runner 2049 was...that is how I imagined Altered Carbon to be. So anything else is a letdown. And they haven't changed ethnicity...not really.

Scifi story that seems to be my kinda show. I've watched the Travelers series (people from a dystopian future travel their conscience to people in the present right before they were recorded to die in an attempt to prevent the dystopian future from happening) and I cant say its that great but I sometimes can't say no to these types of shows. So pretty sure i'll watch it - just hope it's good and entertaining.

Kovacs is half Japanese, half Polish. Reading the books I never saw him as looking very Japanese and if you look at most 'hafu' (mixed race Japanese) the Japanese look isn't super strong. But Joel Kinnaman isn't Kovacs. He's Elias Ryker, the sleeve that Kovacs is wearing at this particular time. Kovacs is a bit like Dr Who. He can be anyone: black, white, male, female and often is. Such is the life of an envoy. Seriously, read the novels.
