Altec Digger Derrick Truck Removing Old Electric Power Pole

A Digger Derrick Truck is used to dig holes, hoist and set utility poles. Here a 45 year old creosote pole is removed. The newer green looking left pole was installed before Katrina/2005 ; years ago and the wires were moved over in stages many years ago to the new pole. The old brown creosote pole was not really defective yet. The green left pole was once added for private lights and then they were removed and the utility left the new green pole in place with nothing attached for many years. The removal order got triggered by last summers pole inspections; ie it was a unused pole thus should be removed since the older creosote type.

I have yet to see an intelligent and skilled removal of a utility pole... Every crew I've seen looked like a bunch of clumsy Dopes!

Wow. How not to pull a pole. You should use a choker chain so that you don't destroy the winch line, set up off the back, not the front weak side, and be closer to the pole so that you get more power out of the boom

I do this stuff for a living and this guy did good - loosened it up and carefully removed it without damage to anyone-anything -to me thats perfect as far as using a choker -I noticed that pole was placed straight from hole to trailer -most times you have to ajust choker so pole isnt butt heavy -this crew just used a shackel on winch line never saw that done

@@davidhagadorn9023 no he didn't. Also you should use a sling, not the winch line.

Also at times I like to open up auger and prop in on an outrigger pad and use it as a kick stand. It gives better leverage and prevents the boom from flexing. Puts dangerous pressure on the turate. Or or course another option is to dig out the base a foot down and cut it and leave the butt and cover it with dirt lolol

When the electric company is done moving service to the new pole, if the old is still there they cut in half down to the cable and phone wires and mark it with an “X” and advise the other utilities to move off the old one and on to the new one. Optimum , Verizon and Frontier hardly ever follow up and the result is there are 100’s of these short poles all over the northeast.

So true. There was a pole that was hit by a car and it was missing the bottom 5 feet. It was a straight run so it was just hanging right over where it was held up by the lines from the poles on either side of it. It took over a week for the company to come out and replace it. There is also a pole that I have seen for a while that is missing its bottom foot and is just strapped to the new pole.

Wow, how not to pull a pole. Use a choker chain next time so that you don't destroy the winch line, set up closer to the pole, and go off the back of the truck, not the side.

I Have NEVER pulled a pole like this. The truck is totally out of position and the choke point is way too low on the pole the bottom should never swap ends with the top when it clears the hole

What a joke, thats exactly how to break stuff. No sling or chain, hits the boom with the butt of the pole, pulling backwards with the pole claws and almost takes out the communication lines.
