Like most people don't understand "No woman, no cry". It doesn't mean that if you have no woman you don't cry, it means that he begs the woman (his sister) to NOT CRY. So it actually should be "No woman, don't cry!", but "No woman, no cry!" is catchier.

There are heavy morning mists This day is especially cloudy While ancient it is fertile and plentiful Vast, in lofty grey, massive and majestic Oh my Altai of both mountainous and fertile pastures A ridged mountain range towers beyond Khovd there Mineral waters pulsate nearby it There is the quacking of Mandarin ducks The cedar forests are exalted here Their abundant generosity, lovely and plentiful Oh my Altai of both mountainous and fertile pastures The snows quickly melt away There are dispersing flowing waters Fresh green crops growing here The cockoo bird cries alone there It was truly captivating rich and sweet Oh my Altai of both mountainous and fertile pastures Tamarisk mountain ranges tower only there There are at altitude sallow goats The Darzai rise beyond, only there There are red mountain goats clashing Indeed there is an intriguing beauty Oh my Altai of mountainous and fertile pastures

you tend to completely destroy and ravage your vocal cords though so this is still a more then impressive display, because there is no gurantee you can even still sing after learning throatsinging, yet alone, actually learn it. Switching between the two shows that hes a master of his voice and knows how to take care of it. Its more then just raw talent as a musician, hes one with his body. or atleast with parts of it.

Found a translation of the lyrics :) This is one of the oldest traditional songs, it is usually sung before beginning epics (poetic stories through music, which could last several days). There are many different versions of Altain Magtaal and lyrics depend on which area the person is from, usually, it is sung by Uriankhai people :) In the video, Batzorig is singing the most standardized form of this song/praise. The translation of the lyrics that I found is from a different version. The general meaning is similar but the words are different. There is so much to write about this song but that will take a lot of time :P Anyways, here is the translation of the lyrics: "In the praise of Altai" With Eternal mountain glaciers as the origin of its water source, With eroded rocky mountain peaks, Willows, aspens as the ornaments of [Altai] Flowing spring as a means of drinking Spruces as the ornaments by itselves Water of river ice as a means of drinking, In every directions of its valleys, Five kinds of precious livestock to be found. Swans, white cranes appears as being content Raindrops on every flowers leafs as means of drinking. When going towards the spruces, Grayish tinge, dark honey deers are leaped When going towards its horizon, Foxes, wolves are seen to run away. When going towards its peaks, Snow leapords, lynxes are to be seen to leap over the cliffs On the river bank, in the midst of willows, Beavers, wild boars are to be seen meandering. In pristine and translucant water of Bulgan river, Every kinds of fish are to be seen swimming freely. Three months of spring season is enjoyed With the spring location on the hillside Three months of summer are to be full of fun With summer camp on the highland spot Three months of autumn to be enjoyed With another camping location on the valley Three months of winter to be well prepared With camping on the mountainside. In my vast steppe plateu, Golden wheat plants are grown densely, seen to be swaying softly On the endless striaght mountain passes, Caravan of camels are to be seen often. Being abundant with all resources, My ageold, my blessed Altai! Melodies and tunes spread quite far, since musicians living in a given area might copy or learn a tune from a travelling musician and write lyrics for it in their own language. It genuinely wouldn't surprise me if the melody Mr. Vaanchig is playing shares a common ancestor of sorts with some Scottish folk songs.

It’s so rare to hear him sing in a style other than throat singing. And to have both styles showcased in one video! Absolutely amazing and what a beautiful voice in both respects. Always a fan

The year is 1234. A battle-worn soldier from the Mongol empire longs for home as his 23 year campaign against the mighty Jin dynasty has finally reached a conclusion. After a decisive victory, he enters a local tavern to celebrate with his fellow brethren in arms. Battered and bloody from the grand melee, he can finally rest. The tavern keeper pours an aged kumis in a recently acquired skull reaped from a fallen Jin adversary. As the Mongol solider gulps his thirst quenching fermented beverage, he notices an idle musician in the corner. The soldier turns to the musician "You there! Play me a song." Batzorig: "Say less" Thank you for this beautiful piece of history Batz. You and many like you keep these traditions alive. Be well.

I'm not entirely sure why but this song fills me with so much emotion despite me not understand the words, something about the way they are said makes me cry tears of joy and longing. It paints such a vivid and beautiful image of the Altai mountains and the surrounding valleys and steppe, and it really makes me want to go there. Out of every piece of music I have listen to in my entire life, I have no idea why I connect with this one so much, but regardless it has quickly become one of my favorite songs of all time.

The instrument is a Morin khuur. As for the throat singing, I only knew the Tuvan terms. Khöömei is a general term for it, and is also describes the middle toned-style. Sygyt is Khöömei with an amplified overtone. Kargyraa is the low style. To get Khöömei it requires throat tension, which is what causes the overtones. The overtones come passively and are not forced (i.e. no whistling).
