Lee Miller, Anne Boleyn and Sylvia Plath - the deadcrushes of each of the band members - conjured up by a supercomputer in a post-apocalyptic world. Absolutely beautiful

This song and video is incredible. Lee Miller's runway walk in her army uniform, as she was a fashion model before a military photographer. Anne Boleyn, the mother of the church of England before the stained glass and her prayer dance. Sylvia Plaith gripping her head as she struggled with her mental health and committed suicide at 30, her works recognized post-death (mostly) because of her very crappy husband, who even burned many of her poems. Amazing work to everyone involved!

Amazing, beautiful
This song never fails to give me goosebumps and I genuinely think it's a masterpiece. Not only is the concept of dead crushes so interesting, but the sound perfectly fits that theme. It's so relaxed and laid-back, but something about it perfectly catches that yearning feeling, like bittersweet sadness.
"As we were finishing writing our second album, This Is All Yours, we came up with a quick jam which we luckily captured on one of our phones. This turned into 'Deadcrush', which is a word we made up to describe someone who is no longer alive that you fancy. Thus the first verse is about Lee Miller, Joe's deadcrush, the second about Anne Boleyn, Gus's."- alt-J

After watching this for the thousandth time, I think I finally understand what the music video is. It's taking these clear disks, which contain the entire essence of each individual and something is documenting them spinning in a kind of projected dance of life until the moment they fall. An entire lifetime for each one of them encompassed in what would only amount to a single spin of the disc in the timeline of the universe. Some stay spinning (or stay alive) longer and some fall faster. Some choose to devote themselves to their faith, their honor, their passion, etc but they all get only one chance to perform. Or at least that's what I now make of this.
@christinekieffer5782

wonderful analysis. I was tracking on this outcome...but why are they all walled up? that is the next dimension....are women put away more for being free thinkers???????????? (consider en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Boleyn)
@MakingtheCase
Жыл бұрын
@@christinekieffer5782 Anne Boleyn was an interesting person, but how do you think she ties in? I think you could be right about it being a higher dimension. But here's the thing. There doesn't really seem to be anything much beyond that building. It's pretty barren. The excitement is focused on the disc, or life itself. Life is the point. Life is the reason and the purpose for its existance. The dance, the struggle, the musing, the creating, and then destroying.
So I didn't care much for this song at first listen on the album- but with the new video, and now knowing the back-story... man, I _love_ it! Alt-J lyrics are so often bizarre and disturbing, but they have such an amazing sound (collective) and carry such an uncomfortably wonderful subject matter repertoire- gaaaah...so amazing!

I think this is my favourite Alt-J song. It's the rhythm, of the whole song (the beat combined with the way it's sung), I think. Also I really enjoy the dancers. They're fantastic, especially at the end.
I don't know which I'm entranced by more: this song or the choreography. Genius.
I wasn't ready for this. Thank you alt-j :')
Each glass plate that is circling represents each dancer in the video. They are from different timeline: past(the fancy dress woman), present (the solider) and future (the one with tights). As the light goes through those glasses, they start to project these dancers. Though they are from the different timeline, they exist on the same dance floor, dancing altogether. The time doesn't exist, and we are just projections of light through prisms, dancing altogether.

my deadcrush is María Josefa Pimentel, the Duchess of Osuna She established a library and commissioned works by Goya such as the Witches Sabbath. I feel y'alls guts in this song. Much More Than Much Love, alt-j boys!
l'art est la méditation, la méditation est l'art, amen!
All this interpretive dancing creeped the hell out of me... *o___o* But hell, it fits the song and its mood damn well.

the whole time I was watching this I was just thinking to myself: "this is just too hip for me to understand it. These guys Alt-J bring a whole new level of nerdiness to the alternative culture."

jim connell, Interpretive dances can be choreographed, so I'm not sure what is the point of your comment, but hey...
This is one of the best songs I have heard in a long time, and the music video is absolutely amazing, I love the style in their dancing.

Think of Relaxer as an LP record. Deadcrush opens , followed by Adeline, Last Year and Pleader. WHAT a side two!
The creators of this video are geniuses.
At first I thought it was weird, now I watch it every day 😂

To me it seems to be talking about that unobtainable beauty of Hollywood stars including Elizabeth Lee Miller. The part about Anna Bolena makes sense and having her likeness captured in plays and paintings... but idk what the plays are actually about and not sure what deadcrush means either. It may help to understand the underlying tragic narrative trying to be portrayed.

No its about King Henry VIII's wives in which he killed(he killed 6 in total) one of which called anne boleyn AKA anna bolina "henry tudor left her lifeless"

Deadcrush is about 2 women on whom Alt-J members are supposed to have crushes, Lee Miller and Anne Boleyn. But these women are dead now. Dead-crush. :p
"Mesmerising" falls short.
Dead crush..... As beautiful as a person can be, always know where you stand.... Just a thought. This song lives rent free in my head, bangin song, it's crazy how much of the lyrics I can feel, as it related to my current situation.....
Just got my tickets for April 8th. My birthday gift to myself. Can't wait. Taking my 17 year old son too. I think it's great that my teenage son will go to a show with his old mother!

Never before have I enjoyed a song so much that I don't understand :')
I love how each of the spinning coins is a dancer and when the light shines on one of the coins it's that dancer's individual character's turn. So lovely.
did you see ??? everything in its right place !!!!
See evil / Hear evil / Know evil Basically an ethical AI machine spanning three archetype characters

It took me till the fourth or fifth time hypnotically re-watching this video that I realized "DC" stands for "Deadcrush"
This is the artistic representation of quantum entanglement. So far I love it
