I have a 2018 Raptor and about 3 months ago, I actually installed the Morimotos on my truck. I was quite disappointed in the light output compared to the stock LEDs. But especially that they are so focused and the cutoff line so sharp, there was not enough light "spill over" to accurately see on the sides of the truck and on road, street signs. I immediately took them off the next day as i felt stock was better. I ended up getting the AlphaRex Nova Midnight Series this past week and finally got them installed two days ago. I am thoroughly impressed with the AlphaRex output and i actually performed the Amber DRL mod which I like a lot better than the standard white (being a Raptor). Construction wise, they were about the same. I appreciate you guys making this video but the one that did it for me was the comparison you had with the Halogen vs LED vs AlphaRex. I could tell by the video that there was a substantial difference and by experiencing the Morimotos myself, the decision to go with AlphaRex was much easier.

Jeremy Wendel yeah, sorry for the confusion man. We did release this video a week ago but it was only up for a few hours. Indirectly we were contacted by Morimoto and they wanted in on the action. So we had to reshoot to end of the video and get a new offer code so those that liked the Morimotos better could also get 10% off

Thanks for that honest real world offroading review it's a huge difference between street and off-road driving and you got the off-road driving down! I have spent too much on light to justify another grand on headlights but nice to know there are options. I would choose alpha Rex personally but I don't like that neither of them have an amber drl and that you have to fuse tap for the brigher drl and that for 1k headlights they can't include a led amber bulb but other than that they both seem like great options for those that don't already have fogs, light bars and hood mounted lights!

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

SERGIO ACEVEDO so the Morimotos you can get with Amber DRL planks. Alpharex is working on a Amber options as well. On the bulb I would have to agree. But it’s the nature of the business. Since they don’t make that bulb it has to be sourced externally, and it kills the costs of the overall lights.

And that test out on the beach was perfect I think that’s more important than the test on the wall

Thanks man. That is greatly appreciated. The lakebed video is really for the off-roaders to see how effective the light is and how much output your get. The wall test is mainly to see the pattern and that really matters more for on road driving. We wanted to show both so people can make up their own mind. Each set had their strengths and one is better offroad while the other is better onroad.

I was going to order the Morimoto's at first, but I found the AlphaRex lights on sale for a significantly lower price. I have had my XB Morimoto’s for just almost a year. Usable light on the road is great. Never really had to use my high beams. Only use high beams when driving thru our ranch. Cutoff line doesn’t hurt anyone’s eyes when getting behind a car at stoplight. The drone video their using doesn’t do justification when your actually behind the wheel driving. Buying the gen 2 now for the start up sequence on the XB Morimotos.

I have a 2007 Tundra. Prior to purchasing I did not compare the two. I purchased the Morimoto XB based on quality and reputation. My goal is to modernize my Tundra and this definitely accomplished that. I love everything about my Morimotos. Interestingly I purchased the Alpharex tail lights because Morimoto did not have one for me. I naturally thought Morimoto would win... so impressed with the light output on the Alpharex. Worth noting... the Morimotos sit perfectly on the Tundra and the light spray is perfect and no adjustments are needed.

Saw this video and ordered the Alpharex Nova series lights for my 2011 F150 immediately. I've seen a few other videos comparing these two brands, and I gotta say, the Morimoto's are a more attractive looking light, but it's the light output that's obviously most important, especially when you're dropping over a grand for headlights. I've done extensive research and the Alpharex is the champ. Recon makes projector HID lights brighter than Morimoto's flagship LED headlights, let that sink in.

It is interesting to see an actual fair comparison of these. Headlight Revolution did a comparison of these model years and put the lux rating of morimoto at 1900 Lux and the Alpharex at 485 Lux. Which is clearly not the case, obviously their light measuring was off or intentionally skewed due to sponsorship deals. I have experience with morimotos products and I am not impressed with their Quality Assurance or engineering design principles. I have the X3B third brake lights and it is not well designed. They omit the center two bolts for plastic pins and it is damned near impossible to get a good seal with he truck because of the lack of the two center bolts. As a result I had to make my own gasket that would seal with the pressure of the two remaining bolts, but not leave it sitting way far away from the truck due to gasket pressure. The second morimoto product I have is their HXB 4banger fog lights. While the lights themselves are decent, you are definitely paying way too much for what you are getting. On top of that, the wiring harness I got with the lights had one of the sides wired in backwards so one light would not work. I had to push out the pins from the socket of the cable and switch them around to make it work on the dead side. This speaks volumes of their Quality Assurance which is WHY they have the 5 year warrantee to begin with, I believe. I have not tried Alpharex yet, but I just ordered their LUXX tail lights so we will see how the quality compares.

That’s why we had the AX shirts on. We tried to make it as fair as possible and let the footage speak for itself. You can clearly see where each light shines. Only regret we have is, that the Morimotos were not properly adjusted. But a field tune was not possible with how difficult those are to adjust. Basically have to take the light out and we did not have the tools or time to do it here.

I have morimoto 18-20 on my 2020 f150. Didn’t even know about alpha. With these lights - as you showed, you need to take time to adjust them. The morimoto’s are extremely easy, i dropped the carpet trim linner and could reach the 4 adjustment screws. My high beams were really high, and low beam were focused too much to center. My only complaint is that I cannot get a wide enough light output so hard to see vehicles and deer toward the sides of the vehicle. Great review and video. Be interesting what more it would look like with both truck lights calibrated as they both were off on low and high

Alphas can be adjusted without removing the liners. Adjustment screw up too for low beams, and an adjustment screw below for high beams. Much, much easier than Morimotos. We did see that the Morimotos provide a more focused light

I dont know if I'm just bias or what but I own the Morimotos and was debating the alpha Rex's because they were around the same price range. But what turned me away from alpha Rex's was that they had a lower end model called the alpha rex pros, and after reading several reviews about how horrible they were i assumed that their higher end model would be just as bad. Even though the alpha rexs are brighter with their low beams compared to the morimotos i chose morimotos because to me it looked like the the day time running lights and sequential looked better. They didn't look like they had gaps in between the leds and looked more like a tube led. I am overall satisfied with my purchase but I hope I won't have any issues in the future like this guy did.

Has to do with the fuse tap location; they assume it must have something to do with the FordConnect app/software. It does turn off but odd it would do that. You probably should have finished the video then 🤷‍♂️. We are not hiding the fact that AlphaRex is sponsoring us. This video was also sponsored by Morimotos, they gave us a discount code to share because of how fair the review was. When we filmed this video, AX lights had only been out a year. Jury is still out on their reliability as we have not seen many report problems to us. Even still now a year later we have not gotten many reports of issues. Morimotos have been out a while and their issues are well documented and that’s why they have such a long warranty. In the video we do make some calls, Morimotos do win some comparisons and loose others. For us our focus is off-roading and the AX lights are the clear winners in my opinion. But many see it differently, specially for pavement use. Next time, finish the video and watch the footage. It really speaks for itself and you can make up your own mind.

Keep It Dirty Off-Road I think Alpharex is focusing on optic efficiency. Diode Dynamic has had a huge success because they use super efficient optics that fully utilize the leds. I think Alpharex and their cube projectors are doing something similar. I have a feeling for these headlights to be Road legal the LEDs they are using are not running at full capacity, I would like to see these headlights have like an offroad mode were you flash the highbeams a few times and the leds go as bright as they can. Morimoto do have a good warranty but I’ve been hearing a lot of issues with them. The loose projectors and even the sun reflecting off their projectors and burning the paint on the headlights. I’ve seen the Nova series Alpharex is doing for my 2012 F250 and I’m disappointed they are keeping the halogen bulb blinker in the middle of the headlight instead of adding two more projectors in its place. The C-Bar is more than bright enough to act as the main blinker.

I already had a suspicion on which would be better even before getting to the comparison part because I saw another video comparing AlphaRex and Morimoto, it was for a Ram. Anyways, your comparison proved my suspicions correct: based on what your camera picked up, the Morimotos are actually better. I know a lot of viewers are saying they'd go with the Alpharex but the way the Alphas focuses the light is the opposite of what you want. They're all foreground and you do NOT want bright foreground. It will hinder how far you can see in the distance at night, and it strains your eyes with so much light bouncing off the asphalt directly in front of your car. You can actually try this, when you're driving, use your hands to block the foreground from your line of sight, you'll notice that it is much more comfortable to look down the distance, although be careful since you are still driving after all. The Morimotos also have a more even, slightly wider spread and distance from the drone shots you provided, the AlphaRex was a giant bulbous foreground lighting that was, quite franky, jarring. When you compared the two on a wall, it was clear that the Morimotos had the ideal pattern. It has a more focused, brighter hot spots (better for distance) and a decent, bright band of light right under the cutoff which, again, limits foreground while providing just enough light on either side to light up the sides of the road. The AlphaRex, however, doesn't seem to have any discernable hot spot which is probably why the foreground is so bright. The high beam comparison actually shows that the Morimotos are better, not the Alphas. This, again, is because of foreground. My car came with factory H4 halogen reflectors and H4 bulbs have 2 filaments: a low beam filament with a shield to create a cutoff and an uncovered high beam filament for high beams. When you turn on the highs on an H4 setup, the low beam filament turns off and the high beam filament fires up and you'll notice how little light is focused on the ground. When you have high beams on, you want distance and height, and minimize foreground as much as possible. The drone shot of the high beams shows the Morimoto shining a bit further with not much more foreground than the lows. The Alphas basically doubled the foreground. The wall shot of the high beams again showed that the Morimoto has two distinct and intense hot spots above the cut off which is what you'll want. The Alphas, as said in the video, needs a bit of fine tuning but the hot spots seem to be all over the place, if there are any at all. I'm not hating on the Alphas but based on the few video comparisons I've seen between the two brands, the Morimoto is the superior product whereas the AlphaRex is notable in only two areas: a lower price tag, and the start up DRL sequence. Again, I'm not trying to sound negative but before anyone sees the comparisons and sees that the AlphaRex lights up the foreground much brighter and therefore think it's better, they need to understand that foreground is actually the enemy. You obviously do need some light shining on the road directly in front of you, but not to the extent that the AlphaRex provides, not even close to that.

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

You may be right but I think you missed a few points in the video. 1st. we did acknowledge that the Marimotos may be better for street driving and it support your comment. BUT, this channel and this video is all about off-Roading and how the lights will help us off-road. What works on the street does not work off-road. And for us, the AlphaRex are far better for an off-road truck on both scenarios. We need to see all that extra detail at the front of the truck, fill light is not as important because we have other lights for that. Our focus is on the terrain so that we can recognize and avoid obstacles That all being said, In my experience, I prefer the Alpha Rex. I can see everything better in both scenarios. For me it works best for both an on-road and off-road application.

While the Morimotos were slightly high, based on the wall comparison it was very minimal and did not impact our test much. In a few of the shots the lights pointed high gave them an edge. The goal of the video is to let the footage speak for itself and let those watching to make up their own mind. One of my High beams was way off and not doing anything and the one working was at the same level as the Morimotos and AlphaRex was still brighter than the Morimotos on the lake bed high beam test. If your leaning towards the Morimotos and you don’t offroad you will see they do better for road applications. But for me it’s about the most light I can get for off-road driving and that’s why I chose AlphaRex.

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I do like the AlphaRex however the 2 year warranty makes me hesitant to buy them, while the morimoto offers a 5 year. I do appreciate you being honest just wish we could have seen both the rex and mori adjusted evenly for a 100% comparison. While in the desert, the shot is quite obvious that the mori's are no where near as far down adjusted like the rex's are. I too agree for me it's about the most light output and concentration when i choose headlights. I had HID's in my 08 mustang and since then i will never buy anything halogen or dull again. LED's are next best and you don't have to deal with replacing ballasts every year, but if those DRL's go bad in 3 years you're shit out of luck. $1300.00 out of luck to be exact.

Nick H all great points. But in my experience, the longer warranty is usually for a reason. So far the AX lights I’ve had held up to some abuse with my dumb ass behind the wheels on trails that have broken my steering. Have not heard the same from the Morimotos. But the Morimotos have been out longer. AlphaRex has only been in business for 2 years. Only time will tell but so far I’m impressed.

Melting housings, TRS telling people it's not covered. Adjustment screws breaking, bad cutoff lines, etc. And every review i have seen of the light output it's not even close. The Alpharex Nova's are MUCH brighter. One did a drone view at night and it was crazy. I am a huge fan of Moromoto and love the way they look, but the quality on some of these has gone way downhill and Alpharex has them beat in light output by FAR,

I would recommend the AX Just based on the DRL planks and easier adjustments. The AX planks are the full plank for the turn signal. Adjustment is also easy from the top. Morimotos has an individual adjustment for each pod. Very inefficient and requires taking out the lights and removing the liner just to tune them. Finally, light out out will be more with the AX lights. For the 18, it’s a 4 pod solution and provides similar light output. Only benefit to the Morimotos is the warranty. That’s it

From what I understand, the AlphaRex headlights have a factory-like adjustment system. There's one easy to access screw at the top that adjusts the low and high beams simultaneously. I believe the Morimoto's have separate adjusters for high and low beams, but from what I've heard, the high beam adjusters are a pain in the ass to access, and may require the headlight assembly to be removed for adjustment. That is something I definitely would not be interested in. I'll take the AlphaRex over the Morimoto's. Both of these headlights are going to offer a vast improvement over stock halogens, but there's no way in hell I'm interested in dicking around with 4 individual adjusters. Over-engineering on Morimoto's part. AlphaRex has it right with keeping the adjustments simple.
