Alpaca veulen met misvormde poot.
Op een middag krijgt Peter van een klant een filmpje toegestuurd via whatsapp. Hij is bezorgd over het pasgeboren alpacaveulen. Het rechtervoorpootje is niet wat het zijn moet en ook de ogen puilen uit.
Peter zou Peter niet zijn als hij niet een oplossing bedacht voor het pootje. Met watten, om de bloeddoorstroming te garanderen, wordt een spalkje aangebracht. Op de vraag omtrent de uitpuilende ogen kon Peter niet direct een antwoord geven. Dit bleek ook geen echt probleem, want na een dag waren ze al weer normaal.
Het drinken bij de merrie ging moeizaam! Alles leek er op dat de merrie geen of onvoldoende melk produceerde. Het jong wisselde tijdens het drinken telkens van speen. Het groot brengen van een hengstenveulen, waar het hier om gaat, met de fles is onbegonnen werk. De familie Evers koos er voor om het veulen bij de groep te laten en zeven keer per dag de fles erbij te geven.
Na een week wil het veulen steeds minder vaak de fles en drinkt veel vaker bij de merrie. Sinds twee dagen komt hij enkel nog in de ochtend en avond drinken uit de fles.
Hij groeit goed, huppelt met de rest van de kudde door de wei, een sprintje door de wei is niet vreemd voor het veulen. Ook doet hij verwoede pogingen om met de rest mee te grazen en knabbelt links en rechts aan een grasspriet.
De spalk zit er nog altijd om. Het onderste deel van het pootje staat nog altijd in een hoek maar met de spalk aan is dat geen beletsel. Wat de toekomst brengt is nog onzeker. Mogelijk dat er een prothese of een schoentje gemaakt moet worden voor de jonge alpaca, we gaan het zien.

Alpaca foal with a leg problem! One afternoon, wildlife veterinarian Peter Klaver in the Netherlands receives a video from a customer via WhatsApp expressing concern about a newborn alpaca foal. The right front leg is not as it should be, and the eyes are bulging. Peter wouldn't be Peter if he didn't come up with a solution for the leg. Using cotton to ensure blood circulation, he applies a splint. Regarding the bulging eyes, Peter couldn't provide an immediate answer, but it turned out not to be a real problem as they were back to normal after a day. Feeding from the mare was challenging! It seemed the mare wasn't producing enough milk. The foal kept switching nipples while drinking. Raising a colt, as is the case here, with a bottle is a daunting task. The Evers family chose to keep the foal with the group and feed it seven times a day. After a week, the foal shows less interest in the bottle and drinks more often from the mare. For the past two days, it only comes for the bottle in the morning and evening. He's growing well, frolicking with the rest of the herd in the pasture - a sprint through the meadow is not uncommon for the foal. He also makes determined attempts to graze with the rest, nibbling on grass here and there. The splint is still in place. The lower part of the leg remains at an angle, but with the splint, it's not a hindrance. The future is uncertain.
