Miss this type of racing, a driver defending for his life. DRS has killed this type of action, DRS would have rendered both these races down to as easy pass. Shame these races were not on the current imola layout without the final chicane.

That is true but with the amount of dirty air last gen cars were producing made the DRS very important tool. But with the new gen cars if they are able to solve that dirty air problem to some extent then probably as soon as next year onwards the DRS might be ditched completely...

I remember watching this race live as a kid in 2006 and it was a happy race for me, to see Schumacher back to his competitive best, after not being able to fight against Alonso and Räikkönen for the championship in the previous year and win a race on merit, rather then that farce at the 2005 US GP.

when was the last time ANYONE won a race on track in normal circumstances??? lando won because he got a “free” pit stop, he would finish 6th or 5th if it wasn’t by that pit stop. Sainz won because Max car broke. Watching the same guy win all the time without being challenged by anyone is, at least for me, extremely boring.

I actually had this kind of battle on f1 game. I was ironically driving a ferrari but in this case hunting down verstappen. I was literally behind him for about 10+ laps and even with drs i couldnt get past cos of cars straight line speed Anyways on last lap i got within 4 tenths before the main straight and as i approached turn 1 i pulled out to the right to try an audacious move around the outside... But guess what? A backmarker was there so i went straight into the back of him and retired from session. The backmarker was an Aston martin driver. I wont need to tell you which one it was lol

Those Ferraris were insanely quick. I cannot believe Kimi and Fernando took as many wins as they did against them. Just shows that having so many variables such as Different Tyres, Refuelling, , broader design rules really could make the racing interesting both on/off the track. On a side note Mercedes won a race now as I predicted in April - I knew the design has potential in it and it would be criminal to throw it all away for 2023.

I remember this race schmi has comfortable lead by 20 secs over alonzo. But he slow down letting alonzo get close to him. And he did what alonso did to him a year ago..

Seeing this battle,I remembered the 2010 Italian Gp where Alonso and Button had an amazing battle which included everything.

@@ciaronsmith4995 All the races back then had a physical flow.Refuelling and tyre war provided less overtakes on track but battles between teams and drivers were much more intense.And this battle was on track purely,not on FIA's office like it is today.Then the championship was decided between teams and drivers.Now it is decided by Merc who had a 3-4 year advantage going into the Hybrid era and destroys the sport.

Probably 2005. Alonso made a lot of little mistakes in Imola 2006 when following. But these battles are slightly overrated because it's almost impossible to pass in Imola and in 2005 they weren't the fastest.

But hey I still never asked is, I always compare F2002 to F2004, plus RB7 to RB9, and then W05-06-07 to W11 and maybe soon RB19 vs RB20( I hope it won't be like this thought), but I never asked this: Which Renault was better between R25 and R26 and more comfortable to win the title on pure pace?? Was R25 compared to Mclaren better or R26 compared to Ferrari??

these battles prove why DRS is the worst thing to happen to F1. If DRS existed in 2005 then Schumacher would've just blasted past Alonso at the first opportunity. The lack of it meant that Schumacher was having to invent different ways to overtake and it meant that Alonso had the chance to defend his position. The argument for DRS is "it aids overtaking". But what stunning overtake in the last 5 years lives long into the memory? None. These battles between Alonso & Schumacher featured, ultimately, no overtaking. But they are remembered because of how fierce the battles were

Só foi aparecer um piloto acima da média como o Alonso que Schumacher parou de ganhar mundiais na fórmula 1. Schumacher ficou de 1994 a 2004 sendo campeão e batendo todos o recordes contra pilotos medianos.
these battles prove why DRS is the worst thing to happen to F1. If DRS existed in 2005 then Schumacher would've just blasted past Alonso at the first opportunity. The lack of it meant that Schumacher was having to invent different ways to overtake and it meant that Alonso had the chance to defend his position. The argument for DRS is "it aids overtaking". But what stunning overtake in the last 5 years lives long into the memory? None. These battles between Alonso & Schumacher featured, ultimately, no overtaking. But they are remembered because of how fierce the battles were
Alonso head and shoulders above Schumacher.
