ALOHOMORA! Make a magic wand that opens a magic box.

ALOHOMORA! Make a magic wand that opens a magic box. My wife really loves the Harry Potter franchise and I really love my wife. For Christmas I thought what better gift than a hand made mahogany box and hand made walnut wand. Then to step it up a notch, how about a wand that magically opens the box! Well, in this video I show you how I made both. I use Mahogany for the box, which is #3 on the Godric's magical scale. I used Walnut for the wand, which is #2 on the Godric's magical scale. I had such fun building this project and hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Nice magic box. I thought about making a wand this year as a gift but my dog keep eying various sticks I contemplated for use. Right then and there I realized it wouldn’t last 5 minutes in my house. To us, a wand. To our dogs, a stick.

Used springs in my prototype but liked the magnets on reverse pole to push the lid open a bit better. Fire me was easier to hide but both work great.

Can you show us how to make the box they have at the Cauldron in NYC? I have a video of what the box does that I can share with you.

Not really knowing anything about Harry Potter, is ALOHOMORA kinda like ABRA-CA-DABRA? Looks like even in your temporary workshop your still have a bit of room to work. Are the cars kept in there also? That's a great saw. If I'm following correctly, the end magnets are always pushing but the drop hinge is holding the box closed. The when the wand magnet is applied to the hinge the opposite pole end magnets push the lid open? Loved this build.

Alohomora is the unlocking shell l spell. You have it correct. Magnets in back groove and sliding to push. Magnets in want pull the hinge up out of the way. Cars are 100% outside now. Garage would not fit our vehicles well at all.

@@BronkBuilt Poor cars. Are they not considered part of the family?! I used to make small jewelry boxes when in Antarctica. We hand an amazing carpenter shop. It was always interesting to me that the smaller box projects take more time and effort that some larger projects. I'm with you on the voice overs. Much easier to narrate after the project. You can control the sound environment much better and it's easier to edit. Good job!

What is the measurement for the wood

  • @BronkBuilt

Sorry for the delay. - Sides are 10.75" long and 3.75" tall - Front and back are 3.75" wide and 3.75" tall - Groove in top starts at about 3/16" from top, then 1/4" groove. That is 3/16" for thickness of wood plus about 1/16" so the top will slide easily but not have too much wiggle room. - Goove in bottom starts at about 3/16" from bottom and is 3/16". This should allow for a nice fit for the 3/16" thick bottom. - Top and bottom pieces you should measure yourself and cut to final size AFTER you have cut all 4 of your side pieces and the grooves. That way you can measure against the exact depth of your grooves for the perfect fit. Hope this helps. Please come back and let me know how yours comes out. If you are interested, I have another video where I make different magic wands for a Harry Potter birthday party we went to last year. In that one I borrowed a friends lathe for my first ever lathe project. I also made some with same technique as I did in this one, as well as one wand shaped with a wood rasp.
