Almost perfect: The SOG Powerpint Re-review

Ойын-сауық

This is just a re-review of the SOG Powerpint re-review. Now with less blurry camera angles and a more straight-to-the-point approach to my thoughts on the SOG Powerpint.

I bought one from ali express a couple months ago and I'm really happy with it. Easy to carry in the watch pocket of jeans with the clip, and really handy especially when traveling. We just went to the beach and I don't carry all my tools obviously and I used several tools while there. I like that the tools lock. I always hated that the swiss army stuff mostly doesn't lock. To me a blade that doesn't lock is useless.

Locking blades are illegal in a lot of countries so people have no choice. It also depends on what you’re doing with the blade.

Solid review. I enjoy carrying a SOG PP around the house to fidget with but its never the first choice outside the house because of the reasons you stated. However, the 3rd best thing about it (after pliers and bit driver) is the side tool density. I think the "solution density" is exceptional, maybe even the GOAT! Yes they all are mediocre at best but will all do their job "in a pinch" and they will solve more problems per size/weight than maybe anything else. How many serrated blades and decent files exist in anything close to this size? Also the locking mechanism is great. I think its funny when people hate on that. Yeah its janky and not terribly strong. But everyone compares it to much larger tooks. The fact that they acheived ANY sort of locking action inside that footprint is impressive.

I would love to replace my PowerPint scissors with the package opener from the Wingman/Rev, which is universally loved. Do you think it's possible? How hard would it be?

No idea! But the perfect multitool would be Powerpint with Victorinox side tools :P

I got the PowerPint for the pliers, bit driver and file. I pair it with a Roxon KS2 Elite which has an awesome knife blade, saw and scissors as well as great side tools.

I checked out the Roxon KS2 Elite too. It technically has a great toolset but I found it had 3 different locks, one would lock one way, another would lock another way, I wish it just used the same lock. I think one could get used to it but I wish it was just one uniform lock :P

@@Dracomies Thanks for the prompt reply! The knife and saw have liner locks of course. The scissors fold in and out. And the three side tools are deployed with the push of a button. That same button unlocks them. I'm OK with it.

I was SO excited to buy the PowerPint and thought it would be the perfect EDC for me, then was immediately disappointed when I got it. The majority of the side tools suck as you mentioned. It’s hilarious to me that you straight up removed them (well played, sir!). The scissors suck and dig into your thumb when using them. It’s like pushing your thumb on a raw edge of a metal sheet. The can opener is a joke and unusable, and the bottle opener sucks too. The pocket clip is extremely strong and has a very aggressive ramp that will quickly destroy your pants. The knives are the only decent side tool as they’re razor sharp. My thumb gently touched the serrated blade (and I mean GENTLY) and was instantly sliced open. I’ve never seen a cut happen so quickly before in my life. Finally, the pliers are good and the magnetic bit holder is a neat feature, but I never use it. The only thing I use my PowerPint for is the small flathead because it fits a Torx T8 perfectly. I keep it next to my knife collection and use it to gently adjust pivot screws because it’s quicker than getting my screwdriver set. I love my Gerber Dime which is enough for my EDC. If I ever needed more, I would skip the PowerPint and get a full size multitool like a Leatherman Skeletool or P2, or get a Victorinox 84mm or 91mm model + Knipex Cobra XS pliers.

We're the same people!! :D Yes!! That's what I thought too!! I also love the Gerber Dime too, I swear to God if they made it with GOOD steel, I'd be freaking stoked. But they never well. But that is almost the perfect size for everything for me! And yeah everything about the side tools of the Powerpint was very disappointing. They don't have good peripherals and many of them are actually DANGEROUS.

Try turning the scissors over and using your index finger. They work better that way. Still not perfect but they do work for basic stuff, cutting fishing line for example. I got that tip from you tube BTW. It turns out they are left hand scissors so you need to use them upside down.

How did you remove the unwanted tools? Did you need to put spacers in?

  • @Dracomies

I did it very crudely :P But I basically put zip ties and cut off the ends to serve as spacers because it would wobble a bit. Ironically I find I actually don't use the SOG powerpint. Its side tools really bother me. But the pliers are ace-tier on these.
