Moesha-Jane E I think it’s possible that people also enjoy the context and meaning behind a song. I personally like listening to sings by people that I would aspire to be like as it gives me an impression that I really enjoy. Why would music videos be made if people really only cared about the song? It’s because the story told by the music video is a performance. It’s the same with the VMAs and music festivals. People don’t just enjoy the music, they appreciate the performance which demonstrates the music visually and shows personality. Not everyone has a universally appealing image and personality which is why not everyone is a universally loved mainstream artist. Its purely economics, music producers make what people enjoy and putting a face to a song that people can aspire to be like makes songs more appealing and thus more profitable. Also keep in mind that most songs are already prewritten before an artist is even chosen to perform the song and if you could choose Rihanna or someone with a dull personality who could sing just as well you would go with Rihanna every single time. But then again I don’t really know what everyone else wants so I stand by my original point which is that how could anyone assume that the rest of the world only wants to listen to anyone that could sing.
