Allotment Priorities, Allotment Tour and First Early Potato Harvest - Better Late Than Never?

Full Allotment Tour (but have I got my allotment priorities right?). Then I finally get my 1st Early potatoes harvested, they've been in the ground a lot longer than expected - is it a case of better late than never? Same goes for my videos I guess!
Cheers

A great video Dave. Nice t-shirt too. I was lucky enough to have received some of your potato crop and I can confirm they were lovely. Enjoy.

Morning Dave good to see you back. My philosophy is I garden for my mind body and soul, harvesting fresh food at the end of the day is a bonus. I prefer a real garden not a perfect Queen Victoria garden 😂😂. Great update happy gardening 👩‍🌾, Ali 🇨🇦

Thankyou - you're right, that's maybe why I hadn't felt the need to do a video for a few weeks, the gardening was my focus and enough for me. Though I did realise I'd spent all my time maintaining and hadn't sown any seeds for a while, some last minute sowings and I think I've got the balance right now. Thanks Again

Hi Dave nice to see you back We grow for fun and enjoyment crops are bonuses which we takecand enjoy But main thing is us if we are happy plants respond i find as they been given that bit more care and attention, You take and enjoy your plots and grow how it makes you happy and thats what matters.

I think that's why I hadn't put a video out for a few weeks, the allotment was hard work but I was so pleased when I got it back on track, I had a sense of achievement, and a big grin, and any video I put out was a bonus, I knew the extra plot would take extra time but I'm finding its manageable (just) - cheers

Hi Dave, haven't commented before but hubby & I have actually watched you for ages love the fact you took on the extra plot, we garden from home lots of raised beds, really enjoy you videos, we've had sporadic weather here in Northern Ireland, had successes an failures, the potatoes we grow in 30ltr containers or bigger, we grow Navan, Maris Piper, we have had Nicola before an tried to buy them as they are a native Northern Ireland potato but with our supposed see border can't get them here lol, look forward to more videos your skin great.

Hey - thanks for taking time to drop me a comment, really appreciate the feedback. I always mean to try potatoes in containers as I always seem to leave a load behind in the ground, but never seem to find containers big enough. My wife's family are from Northern Ireland, and I've been there numerous times, but not so much lately, it's a lovely place, we always had a great time there. Cheers

Thanks for the plot tour Dave, everything is looking very good. Strawberries are taking over the front for sure. I noticed that you skipped over the grassy knoll. 🤔 IMO you can produce videos that rival the BBC but I don't think it will have the same "Dave quirkiness" if that makes sense. I enjoy watching your videos and it is like hanging out with a friend in the garden on the weekends. Always fun to see what you have been up to be it growing veggies or working on different projects on the plot.

Thanks for the support and kind words. The grassy knoll did not go to plan, we all know it, I'm now thinking if I can tweak anything to make it better or remove it completely. I'm glad I've got people watching who see it that way, I think your assessment is fairly close to my intention when I started making videos, the dial of quirkiness I feel sometimes needs turning up a notch , but it's a balance of welcome-ness and wow-ness I'm still working out. But so glad people "get it". Cheers

With the bit of a glimpse with the strawberry bed it does look like it has sunk some, have you poked around with a shovel and take a peek at what is going on or leaving it for 1 more year?

@@TheGeek365 I think I'm going to separate the strawberries from the knoll , have 3 separate strawberry beds distanced from each other so I can age the strawberries better in each bit, change the shape of the knoll into more of a hill, less long more high, and give it up to grass. I can then sit and ponder on the hill surveying my realm. That's the plan!

Yes you can chop the end of the pumpkin 🎃 vine

I think I'm going to - the pumpkins have really grown in the past couple of weeks, so hopefully if I do a bit of pruning the plant will still concentrate on the fruit it already has. Thanks

No the most ,important is the health of the soil. It should be full of nutrients, worms, bacteria and fungi. So once it has lots of organics in it, NO more digging. The compost heap is the most important factor in maintaining soil health. Cover each bed with an inch of home made compost before sowing. Then after sewing cover with mulch such as straw.

I only dig when necessary, I'm not one for digging over an area whether it needs it or not, the soil on my old plot is great as I have worked on it for years, I do have my own compost bins (which you see now and again) but they only produce so much, I'm going to be making a new compost area over winter so should be able to up production. cheers

Did you mention how much better home grown tastes compared to food picked to early and shipped from who knows where?

Good point, at least I know exactly where it's come from and the food miles are almost zero. Home grown you can taste the difference can't you. Thanks for the comment
