Allis Chalmers HD 5 G Tractomotive Track Loader
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I take a look how the Allis Chalmers HD5 crawler was modified, in particular how Tractomotive Corporation turned them into a front end loader. Then I take a HD 5G loader with backhoe attachment for a spin, and play in the dirt a bit.
I found this article one of the most useful for HD5 information, but its still wrong about the transmission... contractormag.co.nz/classic-m...

These classics aren't speed demons on any level, but they are COOL! Hats off to grandpa for knowing what he liked in a machine, and getting it in 3 flavors! 😂

Like the old Bucyrus Dyna Hoe. they were very slow but had tons of torque.

@@shabadoo24 I Love the old machines! I remember a Bucyrus Erie rusting away in our neighborhood in the 70's. I actually watched it being hauled away after seeing it almost every day for years. Sad. I am sure it was scrapped.
I think you're very lucky to have a bulldozer to play on, I'm pushing 65 years old and have never got the chance to play on a dozer, I rented a backhoe one time just to have the excuse to play on it but never a bulldozer, God bless keep having fun and keep the videos coming 😁
I wished i could have a hour there, be like a kid in a candy store exploring and drive cool old machines.
Learning a lots more about you with each episode. Where you grew up, how you grew up, and how you aquired your mechanical skills. Explains a lots. Very good to see you enjoying life.
Tons of fun playing with heavy equipment, especially with no electronics
Trminds me of my grandpa's 30 acre Iowa farm equipment...I loved going to grandpa's!
I remembered as a kid we used to leave the can on the exhaust of our flywheel start John Deere A. We'd compete to see who could launch it higher on a manual start. Closing the compression reliefs worked well, for anyone tough enough to start it that way 😂

They sure can launch one! The problem I have here is that they're easy to lose in the woods. Then you have to find another one before it rains...

I couldn't help but feel they both had friendly faces. Like cartoon doodlebugs. The one with the backhoe, when viewed from the side, began to look like a scorpion. They both looked like a lot of fun! I find no fault in how you operated either of them!
I am glad to see that the loader is involved in some kind of a self healing cult. I remember back to my first construction job in 1960. One of the machines that spent a lot of time on the site in the early days of the project, was a large, new, track loader. I don't remember the maker of the loader, but it was the perfect machine for the soft ground we were working on. I was familiar with the HD5, but that machine was at least the size of the D7 Cat (but not a Cat). What was unique about the loader, was that it had an automatic transmission, and could rapidly change between forward and reverse. It was the ideal machine for preparing a large construction site. I had never seen anything like it before.

Interesting to see a track machine with a backhoe, even more so one with outriggers that are not much wider than the tracks. Somebody out there wants to buy these machines and rehab them, finding the right buyer will take some patience. Thanks for doing these videos, I’ve really enjoyed them.

Your grandpa certainly had a collection of old iron! Did he use them in a business, or collect them for personal use/hobby? So many cool machines!
Thanks LBG, I truly enjoy you playing with your dads equipment. Boe
JAMES, your channel is the reason that Thursday evenings are my favourite time of the the week... and Grandpa's Backyard episodes are my favourite of all.
2:13 that's like Mother Fate tapping your shoulder and saying: "My boy, you didn't think this would be THAT easy?" XD
Love seeing allis chalmers anything and seeing them run and drive makes it better the orange hd5 is my favorite out of the 3 you showed here
running old equipment is always fun if they function properly
Nothing wrong as long as you are having fun playing in the dirt and playing on a old machine ❤
You're playing with the toys I dream of James, it just keeps getting better!!!!!
The crawler was probably made in Springfield, IL. Allis Chalmers was a big employer in Springfield when I was a kid. The whole factory complex is long gone now.
You forgot to put the can back on the exhaust! Great video thanks.
Came for the problem solving, did not leave disappointed.
Very cool old machines. I have an HD5G in my shop, that started out about 6 years ago as just being a steering clutch job, but turned out needing all the bearings on left final drive. Still isn't done 😢 Thanks for the great video ‼️
Love it when equipment self heals.
I really enjoy these videos James. The older stuff is most interesting...
We are so spoiled with the ease of modern equipment
Don't forget to put Grandpa's can back on the exhaust pipe
Great old machines! I would love to have old iron like that on my lot.
Lots and lots of toys to have fun with! Thanks for sharing…
Being your at your dad's u got a lotta seat time on all that stuff brother you were blessed
You have become one of my utube favorites Your approach and remedies have me laughing my Butt off at times. I love these HD5s with there 2-71 jimmy engines steering brakes were the biggest problems on these HDs when they sat for long periods of time ,your going to give Chris from Lets dig18 a run for his money ,Your Dad Has some cool toys for you to play with
❤ this Channel!! One of my Top favorites! Hey Guys and Gals and whatever else, if you like these as well, tell somebody! 😺
Good Job, not many of us can operate an oldie like that
Excellent info and really enjoyed watching. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Great video. Love all things old crawlers! 👍
That exhaust is dancing!
All I saw was lots of cool toys to play with.
I love seeing old equipment still used. A farmer not far from me that shells corn in an old gas powered combine its something to see. Great video as always.
These videos are utterly perfect.
What a couple of old sweethearts, I sure wouldn't like trying to work on those motors
I've always wanted one of those
As a suggestion. If it continues to miss on start up, you might want to check for a bad injector. We had a 6-71 Detroit that missed on start up. Washed the cylinder with diesel fuel and threw a piston right through the side of the engine block. It was a very sad day. By the way, I enjoyed the video very much!!
Remember L-B G, before attempting to operate the machine always READ THE MANUAL FIRST. Clause 1; Remove tea cup from top of exhaust stack. Seriously this is like watching dinosaurs being bought back to life. Absolutely priceless you tube entertainment !
I think you done a mighty fine job operating both machines James 😁👍. I really enjoy the videos you make and always look forward to when you upload. Can't wait to see what you do next. Take care and happy wrenching 🔧🔩

Great video I grew up with a HD5 dozer in 1978 I was 12 my father bought one we did a restoration on it and added a winch he said out of all the dozers made around the same time Alis had the fastest hydraulic 😅
Great video, I always love learning about older equipment.
Wow ! what a awesome collection of G series machines look so fun to run

Looks like you have plenty of awesome projects hiding around the property 😃👍
Yes, I'd have fun, too, if I had a woods filled with heavy equipment to play with.
As long as you're having fun and we get to watch.
Would love to have a machine like that. A cross between a dozer and backhoe. What a wonderful machine . I know you enjoy all that old iron . If I lived close I would make you a offer. But I'm sure it's part of your family and I don't blame you. God bless you and enjoy your life
Good stuff, James...as usual.
That is Pos ground to help keep the dust from accumulating on that beautiful Patina. 🤣
Don't worry about not knowing what each lever does, it happens to me all the time when I try to use a photo editing program 😅
I see what Dad meant about steering forward. I never really thought about the stress on the top of the track vs. the bottom. I operated an old Deere in the 80's in which only one clutch worked. It did fine turning by switching between forward and reverse but that was the only way to turn both directions. It probably wasn't the best for it but it wasn't mine! My boss was the one who had to keep it going. He never fixed it. That diesel twin may still be running today. Probably not but they are such tough engines no matter which company makes them. They have to be.
Really enjoyed these machine videos.
Congrats on breaking 40k subs man!
This is the best Track Type Dozer Video I have Ever seen Thanks so much > Your comments during the Video " Like don't try to turn when Backing with worn Tracks a example " That's Very good Info and so much more like that Thanks > Whats lacking is no mention of available Parts for these Year model's or not ? > are you SH** Out of Luck if you need Parts ? on them ? If only the EPA would allow them to be sold I'm sure they'd be quite popular.
loaders usually have the flat growsers and dozers have the higher ones for traction
I'm sure of this. You had real fun driving these around. I really enjoy using the bulldozer and back hoe. Never did get enough of it! Even enjoy watching someone else doing the work with them. Never get enough James. ( I hope my memory serves correctly regarding your name James?)
The heavy duty grill is a consequence of the "airplane" seating position. You can't see much of what's happening in the front, so in some applications, the owners of these (and by these i mean, all tracked vehicles of the era and before) kept bumping the nose into stuff on the ground. Roots, rocks and everything in between. So in an arms race, pretty much everyone put bigger and better grills. If you go back to prototypes and early units, they're thin sheet metal.
Don’t forget the can😌👌
You can level out a pile of dirt easier, with the buck, than with the backhoe. Tilt the bucket about 45 degrees down , drive passed the pile and drop the bucket to back drag, or do about the same thing keeping your cutting edge a couple inches above the old grade and drive forward. The bucket on your backhoe would be perfect for digging trenches or for cutting roots around a tree too big to just push over.
Awesome Video....
I love this channel !
I don't know but I think you are a bit of a fibber. You claim to not know how to operate it and just driving it around. Then you proceeded to operate it correctly plus the research done. This is why I follow you and your site plus I have a fondness for WWII rust! Thank You!
Excellent video Glenn :) also never did anything with dozer except tow out and not sure operator one ! But was cool how did operator both them and for orange on number 2 get fired up working maybe injector need bleed from fuel injection pump and injector to get air out it ! If not maybe head gasket need replacement or tighten up more maybe!
Like your toys fun to work with
Thanks for sharing
That's a ditching bucket need a material moving bucket for it you probably know already tho nice machine.!
Love your channel, I live in Maine and this looks like you could be my neighbor! This isn't New Mexico I suspect? I remember the Connecticut highway department truck, east coast?
Nice work
@ 10:19 It sure did! Thanks for the replay. You KNOW we all wanted that. Aren't diesels awesome? Do you think it was a "booger" on the injector that just got "ejected"? Or further back. (?) Zane? 😃
Yes I'm very cool Tonka toys adult size! 😎
i give this vid. 2 low-buck thumbs up!!😁

Yes interesting thanks
At least they are hydraulic instead of cable operation. Cable operation add a complete second second level of complexity, making everything Much more entertaining (for the operator).
When only one of two cylinders was working... Was it half running or half dead ?...
How many hd5 s do you have? I have 6 of them.great little machine
They have Detroit Diesels in them ,great engines.

What it’s going on at this property? Why is equipment being moved?
Am I seeing things, or does the red one's tailpipe spin? lol. Prolly just loose but, but it had me cracking up. Great vid as always.
Corn head grease in the bearing hole, it works like gear oil great for bad seals

My Dad saved it from the scrapyard, so it was pretty worn out when we got it. I'm not sure how it worked originally, but I'm glad is was slow for me so I could figure out what the levers did.
