Jordan so smart man. He learned from getting shook that first time in 96 or whenever it was. He sits on his left hand so he has to go right. Iverson likes to wind up and take the ball way out wide in his left hand to cross and go right. If you sit on that hand, it's harder for him to do it. Then he knows he's going right. He might be a step late, but he's a lot taller so he can still contest. None of his teammates were playing him that way. He had it figured out and it looked like it helped considerably.

AI was one of the best (and my personal fave), and would shake anyone with his signature fake-left-crossover-to-right-then-drive move, but notice that Jordan (who learned his lesson from previous games against AI) is the only one that over-defended his right side and wouldn't give that up and forced him to drive with his left hand and settle for a lousy shot (both times). Two of the greatest talents playing their smartest in this masterpiece.

@1thug aka Hollywood Coke!! You can't possibly be serious by saying AI had one hand. Jordan played him to help side defense, which no one else received, in the end Jordan still got blown by and then fouled him on the other occasion. AI was something different, he was faster than anyone on the court at any given time. Jordan did have legendary quickness, but it meant nothing while attempting to guard AI. Only person that was able to guard AI was his poor shot selection.

Not in his defense is the fact that Kobe (R.I.P.) was a good defender from the middle to the latter part of his career. He was never the defender that MJ was most of his career. Also having watched both of their careers in total IMO Jordan was the better player. Kobe was darn close to MJ but no cigar. Those UNC fundamentals edge Kobe out.

Watching this, and remembering how good MJ was defensively at even 35 years old, makes me wish we could've seen him at 25-26 defend the younger generation. There were only really two players that gave him problems after his comeback with the Bulls, those being Penny Hardaway and Grant Hill (and he shut them down as often as they had success against him). Add to that the fact that at age 38 with the Wizards, playing on one knee, he shut down both Vince Carter and Paul Pierce for the entire second half of their matchups; neither player scored a point after halftime. So I think we can say for sure he would be a nightmare for all these young cats if they faced him in his prime.

Kobe's primary matchup was Jerry Stackhouse, and jordan only guarded him on handful of switches. Even the commentator says Stackhouse needs to find new strategy for kobe. MJ played mostly small forward during his wizard years, becuz he gained weight and was a lot slower. In a game against raptors, vince carter was match against rip hamilton and went for 23 in the first half. Wizards switched and put MJ on him in the second half and VC was scoreless. But that was during 01-02 season. In the 55 point game, MJ had turned 40 and they couldn't do that anymore becuz his knees were busted. At any rate, even if MJ did guard kobe, going big on a 40-year-old is nothing to brag about.

MJ didn’t guard him on all, but bottom line, MJ didn’t want none of that smoke. Nobody was gonna stop Kobe from getting his that night. I watched that game live and MJ got handed his as well. He couldn’t do nothing but take fouls and they needed his offense so the coach kept him at SF. If this was gonna be an easy matchup, they would’ve put MJ on Kobe, but everyone including MJ knew the business. Kobe was gonna get his that night.

He was fearless, driving to the basket getting knocked down after being played physically countless times for years, and KEPT COMING! He didn't dribble the ball for five minutes just to finally make a move, going to the basket UNTOUCHED! A.I dribbled not unnecessarily, but with a purpose, either to create space to get his jumper off, or to manuver his way to the basket! No wasted motion or energy. He also was in excellent shape and conditioning, wasn't injured while in college to where he missed significant time and didn't miss many games over his career in the league either..... Note the footwork (one leg refused) and spacing (set back enough to cut off any cut to the basket but close enough to disrupt his passing game and general ball handling) of MJ when he took him down. The hands swatting the ball away were set up by that overall frame, which simply removed all lanes and stymied all shots. He forced him to throw it up, which obviously proved ineffective as the great one had that game locked down to, where he forced a bad shot from the perimeter with time running down. It's textbook defense work. And it's an expert schooling an upstart in the fine art of defensive basketball.

I remember, watching this growing up, as Iverson got more and more popular, he starting taking more and more steps after he picked up the ball, up to 5 or 6 (rule is 2?), and the refs wouldn't call it "because he is a star". It's easy to get around people when you don't have to dribble. I remember Sports Illustrated explicitly calling out the NBA on this at the time.

I noticed the way Jordan stands while defending is pretty amazing. Obviously his skills and level of footwork and agility were unparalleled, but the way his stance is, is a good start to study good ball defense. His hard angled positioning in relation to which side Iverson's got the ball on allows him to read his movements a lot better to prevent being crossed over or trip over his own feet. And it also gives him a quicker reaction time to move to the sides and back while having the balance and leverage to do so. The rest of players guarded AI head on and mostly even in their stance, or only lightly angled, which makes someone so quick and skilled in ball handling like AI easily shake them and get past. Watching the way Jordan plays makes me want to pick up a ball and start practicing again. Nice.

yeah it was the first time jordan encountered something like that. and it became a controversy. a rookie just crossed jordan. but after that, it never happened again. jordan studied A.I. from head to toe. of course allen can still out pass jordan when it comes to speed. but tricking him "again" aint happening.
