Allen & Heath Qu Series - USB Streaming

Музыка

Qu mixers feature an integrated audio interface for USB streaming to / from a computer. Qu is Core Audio compliant which means no drivers are required on a Mac -- it is fully plug 'n play.
Windows ASIO drivers are available on the Allen&Heath website and supported on version 1.4 of the Qu firmware or higher.
Patch the sources to be recorded using the Setup / Output Patch / USB Audio menu. Up to 24 channels can be streamed to USB from Qu-16, and up to 32 channels from Qu-24. Select the sources by touching the buttons on screen and scrolling through the options.
Select Qu as the audio device in your DAW and patch the track inputs before recording, and you are ready to go.
Audio can be returned to the mixer and patched to one or multiple input channels. Route the tracks to the required USB outputs, for example 1 for Mono Input channel 1.
Use the Preamp screen Function key to access the source page, make sure you have set USB B Streaming as the global USB source, and select USB for the required channels. For applications such as virtual soundcheck you can set all channels to USB in a matter of seconds.
If you are using iTunes, QuickTime or similar for playback to the mixer, you can change the OS X default routing of the stereo output in the Utilities / Audio MIDI Setup / Audio Devices. Select the Qu mixer and click on Configure Speakers, then assign stereo Left and Right to the required USB output, for example 17&18 to play onto ST1 on Qu-16.

I'm looking to pick up a mixer, and was advised to check out a few digitals, Qu-16 being one of them. I'll be looking into this mixer some more, but have a question about this streaming with usb. Can I record the "raw" inputs coming into each channel, and then later mixdown after the fact to make a recording? I am talking about recording while also mixing for a live performance.

+New St. John Fellowship Church Hi, you can choose under Setup > I/O Patch > USB Audio, toggle CH/ST/GRP Source: to Direct Out if you want to include processing in your recorded channels. If you push the 'Routing' button followed by an input channel 'Sel' button you can choose where the direct out taps the signal. What you cannot do is record one channel with processing and one without, the setting is global so it's an either or scenario, Mike.

Hi, I purchased the Qu-16 a few months ago. I have watched all of the videos you have produced on how to use the different features of the Qu. However, I'm having trouble getting my usb streaming to work properly. I have a MacBook Pro, using Adobe Audition as a DAW. I have made all of the changes to the custom layer to accept MIDI signals. I have made the changes to the preferences to audio hardware to accept the Qu-16 channels and downloaded the DAW controller. The MIDI channel & DAW controller channels are 1 and 2 respectively. I loaded a multitrack into my DAW and set the appropriate ins and outs in the DAW. The signal comes thru the first layer and not thru the custom layer, therefore I cannot control the DAW from the mixer. Please help, what am I doing wrong. I am getting a signal in the first box on the bottom right of the DAW controller window when I move the regular layer fader not the custom layer. I am a novice at audio mixing and still learning the process. I will appreciate any help you can provide. Please publish more videos for novices like me. Thanks.

Hi Cassandra, the custom layer is only used for MIDI control, not for audio. You won't see the meters move on the custom layer, only on the upper and lower layers as applicable. We haven't actually tested Adobe Audition with the DAW Control app, we currently support Mackie Control and HUI on OSX so you'll need to check if Audition supports these MIDI protocols.

I may want some mics coming in a little louder on the live stream than the PA and others not coming on the PA at all (e.g. drums/ambient room mics)

The WDM drivers use the stereo channels on the Qu, so no, on a PC you cannot configure these to use the mono channels in the same way as shown here. Cheers, Keith.

Hi Kuuuks, The Qu provides WDM and ASIO inputs and outputs for use with computer applications. For WDM input, Line is available from the Qu, and this uses USB 17 & 18 in Setup > IO Patch > USB Audio on the Qu. If input and outputs devices cannot be configured in your program, you may need to set these as the device for Windows in system settings. Please go to support.allen-heath.com to start a ticket you'd like assistance with this. Thanks! Alex

How can I use the effects (e.g. delay or reverb) from my DAW? My DAW is Reason 10. I can create an "Audio Track" within my DAW and can hear the monitor-sound of my microphone, and I can record into the DAW - but the signal is dry. I want to apply the DAW-effects and listen to these in realtime - how is that possible step-by-step? (I have a Qu-16)

  • @AllenandHeathUK

    @AllenandHeathUK

    4 жыл бұрын

Hi Olectrix, This would involve sending the audio out of the Qu mixer over USB B and then returning the effected signal to an input channel. Depending on how you want this set up, you could either use a spare mix bus to route audio to the DAW, or you could stream each input channel individually and choose the inputs you would like to effect in the DAW. This is configured in Setup > IO Patch > USB Audio. You would then assign the output of the DAW to an input on the desk (1&2 for CH1 & CH2, 17&18 for ST1, etc) and source those desk channels from USB B. This is done by pressing the Sel key of an input channel, followed by the Processing key. You can then press the Fn (Source) key to view the input channel source page. I hope this helps and please start a ticket at support.allen-heath.com for further assistance. Thanks! Alex

Would anyone happen to know if the QU-16 USB interface will work in this fashion with *any* USB 2.0 enabled computer or does it need to be an intel machine with a recent OS? *update* I'll be using OSX 10.4x (Tiger) Thanks for any assistance. Attempting to connect the main mix from the USB-B audio out to a live stream on the computer. In the software (Elgato) it shows the 32 different channels. The USB sends on the soundboard are all default. When I select channel 17 or 18 (in Game Capture HD) for the main mix, I get nothing. When I select a specific channel just to get one mic, I get nothing. Most tutorials and videos show that this should just work, so I must be something different. Am I missing anything? (I understand the problem could be with Elgato, I'll try to get it to work with a different program...) Just wanted to make sure I haven't missed something obvious.

If your original sources are coming from the mixer, you could send either your L&R or a Mix output into whatever streaming software you are using. I'm not quite sure what role is Logic playing in your setup. To send a stereo channel from the mixer to your DAW, simply go to Setup - I/O patch - USB Audio, select the USB channels you wish to use and scroll until you find the mix that you want to send. On your streaming software, you will have to patch this same USB Channel as your input channel. If you need further assistance, please submit a ticket on our support system, and I would be happy to troubleshoot this further with you. www.allen-heath.com/where-to-buy/ Thank you, Rafael

Hi! It's possible to patch any input channel direct out/insert point or mix output to one of the USB output channels. This is done in the 'Setup > I/O Patch > USB Audio' screen. You'll need to select the USB channels you want to use, then turn the touchscreen rotary to select the MTX output (as you're using stereo, select an odd-even pair, and patch both L and R outputs of the Matrix to these individually). Then on the computer you're connected to, using a program that supports ASIO, just select these same USB channels from the Qu as your inputs. Hi Robstafarian, having done some basic tests with an average spec. 2010 MBP, we've achieved around 6-7ms round-trip at 24/48kHz. 64 sample buffer, with Qu series. A faster computer may perform better. :)

Hi 1ELiMusic, are you talking about audio or MIDI? On the PC you have ASIO drivers for the audio and there is a MIDI driver to allow Qu to communicate MIDI via USB, the only thing we don't offer is the DAW Control app for PC which translates our MIDI in to the HUI and Mackie Control protocols.

Hi Abhishikth, The Qu -32 has a USB B interface on the back which can be connected to a USB port on your computer. If you're using a Windows computer, you'll need to install the Windows ASIO/WDM driver on your computer. You can find this here: www.allen-heath.com/key-series/qu-series/#tab5 Mac systems don't need a driver. Once you are connected and have the driver installed (if required), the Qu should appear as an audio device. If you need further assistance, go to support.allen-heath.com to start a support ticket. Thanks! Alex

Hi, We are small church with very limited time and resources to setup the Qu24 sound system. We stream using an iPhone on KZread. Currently for the audio we are routing Mix 9/10 on ALT out and using the following cables: 1. Dual TRS to single 3.5mm cable 2. TRS to TRRS patch cable 3. Lightning to stereo adapter. While this setup works we have some buzz noise coming out of it. We would like to switch to Digital audio and use the USB-B port with an iPhone. I see that we will need a "Lightning to USB adapter" and USB-B to USB-A cable. On the Mixer, are there any specific settings that I should change to make this work seamlessly? Hello Kirubakar Santhanam, We do not officially support this type of connection as we do not test the products with it. You are welcome to give it a try by using a USB to lighting adapter, but unfortunately we cannot ensure its proper operation. My only advise would be to make sure you use an official Apple adapter for this., such as this: www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MK0W2ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter Patching and process should be exactly the same as for when integrating with a DAW: support.allen-heath.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4403019846033-Qu-How-do-I-route-audio-to-and-from-my-Qu-mixer-and-a-DAW- My recommendation would be to connect to a computer system instead, with the USB B port. Thanks, Rafael

Pro Tools only works with protocols such as HUI, Eucon etc. We don't supply a utility for Windows that will convert the Qu MIDI to a protocol that Pro Tools wants so you'll need something like Bomes MIDI Translator to bridge the two together.

Hello, Any channel streamed back from the computer/DAW into the mixer needs to get into a new available channel (This is patched from the DAW by selecting as the output any available channels of the QU). On the QU mixer you must select what is the signal source of any particular channel, which in this case will need to be USB B. You can find details of this at the user guide (Page 29), as well as the following article: support.allen-heath.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4403019846033-Qu-How-do-I-route-audio-to-and-from-my-Qu-mixer-and-a-DAW- Thanks Rafael

Hi Marek, It's possible that this is simply a metering mismatch. If the DAW is metering in dBFS, then 0dB on the mixer will correspond to -18dB in the DAW. If you would like to offset this, you could do it using the Direct Out trim. Go to Setup > I/O Patch > USB Audio and change the CH/ST/Grp source to Direct Outs. Next, select a channel and then press the Routing key. You can now boost the Direct Out trim up to +10dB. Please note, this trim is per channel, so you will need to select each channel and boost the trim individually. Thanks! Alex
