The instructions say to remove the threaded piece and the sleeve that it screws into when not using it as a tension rod. That may help with it catching if you remove those pieces.

You are nicer then I would have been on this review. Worst curtain rod I've ever used. Got the same one and the allen wrench lock stripped immediately when trying to lock it. Plus all the issues you pointed out. Would not recommend.
