this is a good example of building something using materials that are lying around and making something durable and effective. you do not need to spend a boatload of money but you do need some imagination. When I had my 70' VW Transporter, a good imagination certainly helped along with some sheet metal, misc. threaded rods, and my Lincoln wire feed welder. Allan has imagination. I even noticed that Keene sent a comment on the original video. Thinking "out of the box" and some engineering concepts works with so many things.

Thanks for the list. The 1st video was the best in narrative and hands on detailing. This one,not so much,but thanks for the video.

At first I didn't like using the arm on the wiper motor.. thinkin Love-joy connector etc.. But after some thought I began to appreciate just how robust this design is.. PVC frame, imperfect drilling of holes etc.. Good solution for the setting in which this little beast will be built and used.. Hey you can always upgrade (and spend a bundle lol) Thanks for the Trommel video's Allan enjoyed them all.

@@nicholassteichen4552 hummm? Honestly, I'm not sure. 🤔 My trommel is in the shed at the property (75 miles away), so I can't glance at it easily. I believe it didn't have a black wire to ground. In Chinese wiring, dark blue is also ground. How I configured mine was to take red and black wire from a 12v power source (battery). Connect the black wire to the one I think is ground. Use the red wire to individually touch each remaining wire. A quick touch for half seconded is all you need to know if it's the correct connection. Usually each wire represents a different speed. You'll just have to experiment. 👍

I really appreciate this series - great work! The feeder hopper seems seriously cantilevered with the PVC frame bearing the load- have you had to add bracing on that end of the trommel? Thanks 👍

At video 16:00 you will see how the hopper is mounted. Basically it is attached at three points onto the PVC pipe. One in the rear (base of bucket) and the other two on the rim (top of bucket). I have found that these three contacts are very sturdy in relation to the hopper. No need to brace. In my original wash plant video you get a glimpse of how the steel fence poles mount onto the PVC and support the hopper. Dumping 3-4" rocks into the unit doesn't appear to harm. Thanks for asking !

Your First Video had GREAT CARE and DETAIL I come from a background as a boiler room engineer doing every form of maintenance and repair also for the buildings in the campus. I later became an autoparts manager in old school when one had to know parts. I have welded and fabricated things as well. Today I am very handicapped spinal injuries and strokes and can do very little. However when i saw this project I was greatly encoraged So down to this second video. The difference between video 1 and video 2 is so stark as To begin with you show no measurements in the second video of anything. I am not worried about the connections between the shaft and drive motor. This was explained well. but the placement of the drill holes are not centered but oriented to the right side of your frame. QUESTION What is the reason it the motor to the drive shaft is not centered? You have done everything purposefully. So in the first video things you would do the reason would later be apparent. COMMENT looking sideways with the two legs one on the far end and one toward the middle front. In the view the plastic pipe is sagging. and putting in dirt and rock into the would cause flexture of that outlying unsupported front end of the frame. From this point after explaning and showing the connection of the motor. You become EXTREMELY VAGUE Example you do not show the piece you put in between the Hopper and Trommel. You offer a few explanations but the part itself is not shown. You spoke of a leak but the video is so dark at that point the reason for the leak is hidden, The Cowl that the trommel color is drained into These pieces are so important but again you do not show them by themelves or their joining. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT POINT Then to the back end was never shown. I was surprised with the abrupt end of the second video I can replicate in my diminished capacity video 1 But in video 2 to many things are not shown, not measured, and not shown how they were connected together This leaves me in doubt as having to guess and speculate on too much. This video is several years old so I would imagine that a number of people would have talked around all they could not see here. I really suggest to splice into this second video footage on the things not shown even ten minutes would be a vast improvement and would help emmensely Thank you for your time.

Hi Bo. Thank you for your critical analysis. However, you must understand I'm doing this tutorial for FREE !! What do you expect ??? Sounds like you have well rounded knowledge on things of this sort. So, where are your trommel instructional videos ?? In video 2 & 3 I purposefully left it this way because of unknown variables of the DIY users needs. It was easier to leave it up to them to finalize the project. I simply pointed them in a direction. Video 1 was critical to the success of turning a reasonably accurate circle with inaccurate parts. Hundreds of people all over the globe have copied my idea and built their own machines without issue. Many are quite impressive ! Unfortunately, once a video is posted, it can't be spliced. Wish it could though....

@@allansgoldmining I built a trommel the same way you did, only about 12 years ago . We must think the same! I've also have built a hybanker & 2 dredges. I'll be headed out soon for the gold when the hard water gets soft! Still like the hat!

Have you ever mounted a worm to feed the materials and assist the water flow?

Not really. The trommel angle (8 degrees) seems to work well for material and water flow. However, I use augger flights on the dewater trommel for that purpose. See Tommel Build 3 video.

I built one too. I used a belt from a laundry dryer. Worked ok, but would stall if trommel had moderate amount of material. The wiper motor seemed far better. Good luck with your build !

@@allansgoldmining actually I was going to use a wiper motor to do the belt drive I was thinking about. Belt or chain. Listening to the build videos at work I had a idea for using a mountain bikes rear tire for bracing bearings and drive gears as a all in one. Mount the Rim on the outside of the bucket and thread the spokes for the tire through the bucket into the Rim. As I'm writing I think I figured out how to keep the derailer from the bike a bit of speed control

Why not take the arm of and mount the motor direct

The purpose of this mount is to eliminate binding. Direct drive will experience binding due flexure of PVC frame and off center loads.

Hi Jeff. Unfortunately, I don't have a web site. If you're working from a desktop or laptop computer, you can view the video on full screen. Pause it on the material list, then press the key "Print Screen" on your keyboard. The image will be saved on your harddrive. You can print from there, or paste it on a blank page in MS Word or Adobe Photoshop, then print it. Hope this helps. Good luck on your trommel build !

Great trommel build series. You lost me when it came to the motor speed. I'm no electrician. Would like to have seen how you wired the motor to get the low rpm. Can you explain that part in more detail? Thanks a bunch.

Hi Geno. Good question. This is a 12 volt DC motor. On this particular unit, the black wire is the ground (negative -). The white and blue wire are the source (positive +). Attaching the white wire to the positive (+) pole of the battery, it will turn about 60 rpm. Attaching the blue wire to the positive pole will turn about 30 rpm.

No one trommel ive seen from gold rush to home made has an axel. They all sit on and run by sitting on rollers out side the cylinder. The only time the inside of one has anytime inside of it is bull bars and a secondary wash set up. And everyone of them has a steeper incline than you have made.

Hi, when you made your drive system with the collar and washer, did you use those self tapping screws or through holes with nuts and bolts?

Hi Jacob. I used standard 8-32 bolts and tapped holes on the collar. You could run the bolt all the way through and lock it with a nut as well.

Hi Allan I finished my trommel and after testing it here at home with the garden hose and a low producing well it wasnt near enough water volume. what size bilge pump gph and brand do you recommend? And how long does a deep cycle battery run with the motor and pump? Thank you

Hi Jacob. If you are using a 10" sluice with standard Hungarian riffles, I recommend using a SeaFlo 3700gph 12 volt pump. Buy it on eBay for $80. There are cheaper ones that I've tested, but have longevity problems. The SeaFlo pulls about 16 amp/hr. A single deep cycle will last about 6 hours. I combine two so there's enough amps for the trommels and pump. Recently, I have converted my riffles to a new system developed by Snake River Products called a "Picklepuss" mat. It does an amazing recovery job, yet requires only 1500-2000gph pump. I even like it better than Hog Matting ! Plus my batteries last longer. Pulls only 8 amp/hr. SeaFlo makes a 2000gph for about $50 on eBay. Hope this helps ! Allan

Hi Allan I have an older sluice with standard riffles and its pretty small. Its the 10" and only 30" long so I'm thinking the 2000gph just might work....I think lol.. Plus a bigger flare on the box would help and after cutting up all these buckets im sure I could make one haha. A longer lasting battery with a lower amperage pump would be nice. I mounted toggle switches on the trommel so I can turn it off if I have to dig longer than expected. I'll get er goin here at home correctly and hit the hills as soon as the snow melts here in N.E. WA! Thank you for your help

I really think people are trying to hard to come up with something that everyone must have... plus y’all are use 5 gallon buckets which is really driving me mad... if I offer a suggestion would you give it a try or would you try to sell the idea. What would you say about using porcelain washing machine tub, I think it would be a older model you put the material in the front, you cut a decent size hole maybe 5 inches long for the average size material to exit, and for the larger material , just stick your shovel inside and catch them and toss it.the holes are perfect
