Actually its a miss conception. The ss Charlemagne division defended the actual Reich Chancellery where it was used by thr gov. Where the Reichstag used to be the reich chancellery untill in 1933 when a fire broke out and was never reconstructed .

No only a group of SS Charlemagne from the 300 Man Charlemagne battalion whom with some Volkssturm Kreigsmarine honor guard 1st SS Leibstandarte also a group but it’s was mainly the 11th SS Panzergrenadier Division Nordic Holding ( that’s what the Charlemagne battalion was attached to mainly holding the Reichs chancellery building or the Reichstag )

This is literally just SS Charlemagne. They didn’t surrender because whether they surrendered or fought it didn’t matter everyone of them would be hung by French authorities.

Only 300 ( around a battalion got into the city and there was some who got out and were on documentary ) but no as the remaining Charlemagne members who didn’t get into Berlin surrender to the free French and also it was not just Charlemagne it’s was mainly 11th SS Panzergrenadier division, Nordic as they were attached to it most of them were at the Reichs Chancellory building instead of the Reichstag about 300 Leibstandarte Nordic Charlemagne Volkssturm and Kriegsmarine honor guard defended the reichstag for about 2-3 days

The honour guard fought till the end

The SS did not use black uniforms in this year. They stopped in 1939 to switch to better uniforms for camo.
