Maybe it wasn't what Gru did but something he didn't do: not fulfill his promise. Breaking promises is a deadly thing. Just my theory

Maxime Lamou or however you spell his name looks a lot like Wild Knuckles so when Gru turned good, there’s a chance that he was mad because all the mentorship by Wild Knuckles (his dad) were wasted

I believe that this movie's new villain is secretly Vector. This is because Vector has always had a fascination with weapons involving sea creatures. Also, my biggest pieces of evidence is that the crab mech that the villain is shown to be piloting vaugly resembles the minion robots from Vectors bos fight in Minnion Run. Also it would give more meaning to the vector short shown last year. And although you may say that it's not a crab it's a bug. When yes this may be true this may be his attempt to not catch grus full attention so he can truely in act his revenge for his defeat all those years ago.
