Island hopper here since the '80s! A slow ferry is the ideal way of traveling to the Greek islands! You need to have a jacket or a sleeping bag or something with you. If you stay inside, the ac kills you. When we were young we used to despise the people who sat inside, let alone those who rented a cabin , because you can have a cabin in slow ferries. If you sit outside, though, the wind at the open sea can be feezing. Thus, extremely important on slow ferries is the spot you're going to reserve for your trip. It takes some experience to know beforehand where the wind is going to be annoying. Back in the 80s I either followed my Greek friends or watched the islander passengers lay their blankets or sleeping bags in order to decide where my spot would be. For me is absolutely fascinating to watch the different "tribes" of passengers on board. The locals, the families, the tourist groups, the delightful teenagers in early July! People think that the ferry time is wasted time, but for me is the most valuable traveling experience! So many stories from the 40 years of island hopping!

As an experienced Greek ferry user for many decades I still avoid the highspeed ferries (except the 2 Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans). For example to go from Santorini to Milos I rather spend 5 hours on the Dionisos Solomos than 40 minutes on one of those small Seajets' puke buckets (Seajet2 and Superjet). Not to speak about the price of a ticket. 16 Euro for a leisurely cruise sitting on an outside deck compared to 70 Euro (or more) for being locked up inside in a small tub.

Schedules for the "summer season" are mostly published between November and March. Schedules for May are normally availble around New Year. Allthough there are some exceptions like companies that are always earlier and other companies that are always late to publish their schedules. And then there is Seajets that publishes schedules early to change them afterwards without giving any notice.

Thanks for another informative video. As a seasoned ferry traveller to the Greek islands for many years I think it would be useful to mention a couple of things. First is cost. Long ago in my teenage years travelling by ferry was really cheap but these days with the global economic crises and the sharp increases in the price of oil the ticket prices have shot up and if you are travelling on a budget you need to factor these costs in. Secondly it may be worth providing further information on the pros and cons of the respective ports particularly Piraeus versus Rafina.I guess your videos may be aimed at those people new to ferry travelling in Greece. I am a grown man able to take of myself but I find Piraeus intimidating especially in the middle of the night. If I was a lone female traveller I would be concerned although in fairness I have never experienced any trouble. There is no problem with the street area adjacent to the metro where the Blue Star ferries tend to berth- plenty of people around but last year my boat ( not BS) was berthed at the furthest end of the port almost adjacent to the cruise ship terminal so a walk of a good half mile along the quiet dockside. On another occasion our Blue Star ferry was being taken out of service and berthed next to the Blue Star offices not far from the harbour wall. At least they provided a shuttle bus. It is not easy to describe how vast Piraeus is especially for the first time traveller searching for their boat. It is worth mentioning that it can take an hour to get from the airport to the port and in my experience the bus drivers have no idea of where a particular boat is berthed ( and why should they) but it is easy to alight when he / she shouts Piraeus and you find yourself with a long walk. Every year I use the bus it seems to go via a different route sometimes via the motorway type toll roads other times not. This year buses were at 30 min intervals in the 2.00 am to 5.00 am period. If you are unlucky to land at the same time as other planes you may find yourself standing for the journey or having to wait for the second bus. ( As an aside cannot fault Athens airport. Compared to the disaster area that is London Heathrow it was straight through a fully manned passport control and the luggage arrived straight away so thumbs up to all working there). For these reasons I much prefer Rafina. It is small, you can see all the boats lined up ,a few cafes to sit at and an under cover rest area with plenty of seats. Although bus frequency is a bit longer (can be up to an hour) the departures do seem to tie in with the boat arrivals. Last Friday I was off my Sea- Jets boat at 14.30 ,on the bus at 15.00 and in the terminal at 15.45. I recommend it if you are travelling to Milos/ Tinos / Naxos. Only issue is that I think it only caters for fast boats not the slow boats. Finally as an aside I wonder how long the slow boats will last for ? Blue Stars Naxos/Paros/Delos/ Chios are all now old boats and the company has not introduced a new slow boat for years. I doubt they ever will letting these old favourites slowly rust away. Apologies for the length of the post hope it provides some useful tips or stimulates comments.

Thank you! I did not talk about prices as they have changed so much that I am afraid it might be out of date quickly plus those are easily looked up online on the site I mentioned. I have never left from Rafina or Lavrio so cannot speak to the differences. I have never had any issues at Pireaus and have even arrived late at night. Taxis are always available even at the far away gates. As far as the bus, you should always get off at the last stop. It is at the center of the gates and near the sign that gives the gates for the ferries on a board. I don't think the slow ferries will go away as the have to keep them running in the winter for the year round island residents.

To Greek ferry standards, the Blue Stars Naxos/Paros/Delos/ Chios are not old. They are just 11 years old. Compared to some others (Seajet's Aqua Blue &Superstar, ANEK's Prevelis and some others theose Blue Star vessels are just kids. I agree that Rafina can be a good alternative allthough only for a few destinations (Andros, Tinos, Mykonos + Paros & Naxos in summer) due to it's proximity to the airport. And no, Rafina isn't just there for fast boats. The big majority of ferries out of Rafina are the conventional ferries. Only in summer you will find 1 or 2 highspeed ferries going from Rafina.

As someone who lives here and takes the ferries monthly, I would never recommend showing up 10 minutes before. Trust me, it doesn’t always work out. For the best seats, you want to get there early. You were lucky to get a ticket if it was a week ago during high season.

@@agirlandherpassport Yea sorry meant for the seats, tickets I did a couple of weeks before for the longer distance ones and all the others I bought in the morning at the port same day, like aegina, poros and agistri. But in terms of seating, people always walk around a bit and on none of the ferries did i have to stand for the whole trip... Only on the one to Paros which was a miserable little worthless fast ferry where everyone was suffering on seajets management as they closed the outside deck... That ferry sailed here in the baltics many years and outside deck was always open so, that was a miss in experience. But sure if you have a plan to not go around and explore anything on the ferry and just want to be at one place for 5-7h then yes go early, but as I said, never had a problem finding a seat because people moved around on the ship and spots were open all the time even on the crowded larger ones. =)

But I have been on most of the ferries so I don't explore much. I would still advise getting on early for a seat so you aren't constantly looking but that is just me. This is also what most Greek people do. They find a spot and sit there the whole ride.

(slow/fast categories) I consider "flying dolphins" as their own category for short/fast trips. However the larger ferry boats can indeed be separated into slow and fast with massive differences in speed and overall travel experience. For example Piraeus to Rhodes with Blue Star takes about 12hrs and in contrast with Prevelis the duration is 34hrs.

It should indicate how many beds and if there is a window. Two beds is right. Some ferries will have a double bed cabin as well. For checking the cabins, I suggest you look at the ferry lines website directly as it should give you an idea of the cabin options.

We are so disappointed at Greek’s Ferry service. We need to go from Athens to Paros. We could not get a early time ticket. This is May, we will arrive Paros at 10:00 pm. But 4 hours later, we got a notification, our tickets had changed to 11:30 pm departure form Athens. We will get to Paros 3:30 am. Our Airbnb is not refundable. Frustrating to say the least. We wonder if they sold our afternoon tickets to someone else for a higher price. Worse, they want to charge us 25 Euros for the change they made for us. If we need to talk to an agent. There will be another 25 euros. What a rubbery.

There are all year round routes and then there are the seasonal routes. The latter usually start around Greek Easter and end mostly by the end of September or in October. Secondly, there is also the system of government subsidies for routes that include small (barren) islands. These subsidies can be for a short period (10-12 weeks) or a long(er) period (6 months or 1 year). A ferry company can also decide if they do more runs on a subsidised route then they are required to. However few will do that because the subsidies are mainly there because some routes are not realy viable for the ferry companies.
