Worth noting that Deep Throat's identity was kept secret for decades until former FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt came forward in 2005 and Woodward confirmed it was him (Felt had previously been theorized as Deep Throat's identity, but Woodward was insistent about not naming his source; in fact the way they cast Deep Throat's actor in the film was just that they had Woodward look at actors' headshots and tell them who would be best)

We now know that Bob Woodward was a CIA asset sent to oust President Nixon. He wasn’t a journalist. The same CIA that participated in the Kennedy assassination. This movie is part of the disinformation used to conceal the CIA's crime. Think this is fantasy? Just spend 60 seconds key-word searching "Bob Woodward CIA" and see what you get.

I agree. But in some ways, it was easier to find people and information back then because there was less paranoia about privacy. You could often call information for any city in the country, look in a phone book, call the Department of Motor Vehicles, etc. And if you didn't want to be traced, you could call from a phone booth.

23:53 that wasn’t anyone typing, it was the news wire service - a teletype machine. Essentially a robot typewriter printing the articles that go out. Since the internet wasn’t a thing yet, and the physical newspapers only came out once per day, you could subscribe to the “wire service” to just get a stream of news stories as they’re written. It’s how, say, Associated Press or Reuters sent out their stories, so other newspapers could print them, and how big newspapers sent out their own stories too.

"All the President's Men" was one of the 1970s greatest movies about the biggest scandal in 20th Century American politics. For many of us who had tried to piece together what was going on (and at the time, it was confusing) , this movie helped tie events together comprehensively. The direction and acting were first-rate ( and if you've seen "Twelve Angry Men" you might recognize actors who were in both movies) and was a must-see when it was released. Great reaction, Ms. Camilla. Well done.

The odd name of "Watergate" for the hotel complex came from a literal water gate on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, built in the 1830's. It was a reinforced wooden dam on the mouth of the Rock Creek as part of the first lock on the system. The remains of this dam became part of a National Park in 1971. (You will also find other claims for why the name, but these are mistaken.)

Great reaction of this classic film!! I so enjoy your channel!!! All The President’s Men won four Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Jason Robards as Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was nominated for four others including Best Picture. Spotlight (2015) is another investigative journalism film that won Best Picture at the Oscars. You should definitely react to it. 👀🍿

Wow, this was just a great film all the way around with iconic actors giving great performances and the writing of the film about all the little pieces being fitted together in detective fashion. it’s why the fourth estate of journalism was so important and it’s tragic that it no longer exists. Good for you for doing such an older film that nobody seems to bother about. Little bit chatty, but that alright.

I was twelve years old when the Watergate hearings were held, and I watched them through the summer with my mom who would comment. I didn't understand the nuances, but I felt that you don't have a case for impeachment if you need the President's tapes to prove it.

This was the incident that changed the public's perception of the Govt too. Before Watergate, there was a LOT more deference given to Politicians, and they were assumed to be acting in good faith. They got away with a nod & a wink. Nixon and Watergate blew that perception up. Ever since then, the public has seen the inner workings of how govt works, and how dirty campaigns get. Since Nixon, we now automatically assume that politicians lie to us.

I really enjoyed your reaction to “All the Presidents Men”. Bob Woodward still shows up on CNN now and then with their coverage of Trump. Anyway, just as fascinating is a mini-series that covered all the people that Bernstein and Woodward were investigating. The series is called “Gaslit” and stars Julia Roberts as Martha Mitchell and Sean Penn. I think you’ll enjoy it if you care to give it a watch.

Your age and you have never heard of Watergate. Woodward and Bernstein are both still alive and you see them on TV. Woodward has written a lot of books, a couple about Trump. This is a true story. It was very different before computers. It was a lot of work and you had to keep very good notes of everything.

I'd disagree on the ending. I can't picture anything more dramatic than seeing the announcement of Nixon's resignation come up on the teletype, which how the word would have been distributed to the other news affiliates. It essentially says in a clever and indirect way "Woodward and Bernstein did it."
