Awesome job! I build most of our own cabinets for our home and my shop. That display really shows in detail exactly what hinges I need to buy for the new floor to ceiling storage cabinets I’m building for our garage. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this info. My knowledge of spraying is limited to water based products. We get good results with Sayerlack waterbased products. The top coat is code AT99. Purchased from Movac here in the UK. I know a lot of people doing this sort of work using PU products with good results though. Waterbased needs extra sanding down after the first cost due to grain raising but after that you can get a flat finish with a normal amount of denibbing. It depends a lot on the quality of the board; Medite Moisture Resistant MDF is better than most

I ungraded my normal hinges to Softclose Hinges - but had to use Hetich as the existing holes in the doors (cup side) were 52mm centres. Most of the Blum are 45mm centres. If your carrying out an upgrade - make sure you check the existing door side screw positions/centres. The Hetich hinges also come with a multidue to options - like arm covers and cup end covers.

This is great! Just started working in a furniture company as a constructor and now I know what everyone is talking about. Thanks! So do you choose the mounting plate accordingly to the thickness of the sides or the door overlay?
@Alastair_Freebird
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikolai, glad it was useful. The mounting plate does affect the overlay, and therefore you should consider the choice based on side thickness - a zero height Blum mounting plate gives a 16mm overlay suitable for an 18mm side. A 3mm height mounting plate gives a 13mm overlay suitable for a 15mm side. Bearing in mind also that the overlay is adjustable a couple of mm either way on the hinge
I'm building understair storage with inset doors so they go flush with the wall above (staircase is on the other side of the wall). A double door cupboard and a smaller single door cupboard. We are doing a self-build and I'm not a fine carpenter! I installed hardwood frames straight into the structural opening and managed to get everything square and plumb, then bought Blum hinges after watching this video. I made a quick prototype of the top door and found immediately that where the door goes to a point, it binds on the inside edge. So I had to remove a section of the top of the frame to flatten it out and it worked great. Installed the doors but hadn't realised the same problem in reverse exists: the OUTSIDE of the other double door binds against the frame when it opens to near 90 degrees. So I contacted Blum, who were excellent and told me the exact correct product, but unfortunately it needs a mounting plate with additional screw that sits further back in the frame, something like 85mm back as the door is inset. Unfortunately my hardwood frame is only 75mm deep. Ugh. Now I'm wondering if I should ditch the whole frame set and replace with a deeper one. Or if I should make some kind of radius or even notch the frame (ugh) where it binds. It's my own home, so not a customer project... and my levels of care are decreasing as there are so many other aspects of the build to complete! If the former then that's a week of work down the drain :(

@@Alastair_Freebird First I purchased 70T3790 (inset hinge without spring, as I was planning on using the tip-on spring), with mounting plate 174L6100. Everything fits fine except the left door of the double set. (the shorter door.) Then they recommended I go with 71B7960 (155 degree hinge) with 175H7190 (9mm mounting plate). There are a few problems with this solution: (1) my original mounting plate (already installed) has the knock-in fixings but the new mounting plate only has two options, system screws or chipboard. I was planning to test chipboard screws mounted into the knock-in plastic dowels already installed, which I hope will work. However problem (2) is that this new mounting plate part number states "Fix with additional screw if used with wide angle hinges". As I *am* planning on using these wide angle hinges (I guess 155 degree counts as wide angle?) that screw should be installed. But it looks like that screw is set back an additional 26mm according to the Blum catalogue. As these are inset doors, we also need to account for 18mm + 1mm tolerance. So that's 18 + 1 + 37 + 26 = 82mm back from the front edge of the frame. My hardwood frames are only 74mm!

Very useful video! Do you have to have the soft close on both hinges or can it only be on one of the hinges for full size door applications in say a kitche? Thanks
@Alastair_Freebird
Жыл бұрын
you can turn them off and on until you get the right level of soft close. We find that 3 out of 4 hinges is enough soft close on a tall door, and we usually just use one on a 2-door small cupboard door. So we actually substitute the other hinge for a slightly cheaper sprung hinge without blumotion at all
Another great video, bookmarked for future reference - thanks. Have you done anything on dealing with out of plumb cabinets ? I have to retro install / rework a flush MF door in an understairs space where the hinge wall is out of plumb and the hinge plates are screwed directly onto a piece of MDF fixed to the wall. The customer wants a minimal parallel gap between wall and door, so the whole door is going to end up rhomboid.. I am sure this will be achieved with a lot of faffing, but what hinges have the maximum adjustment capability ?
@Alastair_Freebird
3 жыл бұрын
Richard Keith just say no, sometimes customers need expert direction. Always make the hinge edge plumb so the door swings well. Either do an overlay door and use hinge adjustment to overlap the edge to plumb. And/or add a cover strip fitted flush to the face of the door to create a neat vertical gap, all covering the existing wonky structure.

Do you mean the mounting plates for fitting on the inner edge of a face frame. They are much more widely used in America than in the UK. Example: www.handlesandmore.ca/face-frame-adapter-plate-0-mm.html
I have to compliment Blum on that Technical Catalogue, it’s not your normal catalogue and is well produced and a luxury as far as trade catalogues go 😅
Hi, very clear explanations. I have angled under-stairs doors to fix as overlay doors on the dividing panels but inset under the frame above it. The high side with the 45 degree point which has the hinges on it is going to catch on the flush frame above which is sloping down if using a standard concealed hinge. Is there a hinge that will move the door out horizontally at the same time as opening so it doesn't move across? Hope that is clear. and many thanks if you can help.
@Alastair_Freebird
3 ай бұрын
Yes I understand. The 155degree hinge throws the door outwards as it opens more than other hinges however you will still need to cut a bit of a back bevel on the top sloping edge of the door to deal with this issue. Or redesign it so that the door finishes with a bit of a flat top above the slope, and fill that in with a small fixed triangular panel.
@Alastair_Freebird
3 ай бұрын
An alternative solution that requires no back bevel on the door top would be the Sugatsune 'Lin-X' lateral door opening system
@ColinLloyd-eg6oo
3 ай бұрын
@@Alastair_FreebirdHi. Thanks so much for thinking more about this. I did come across lateral opening hinges myself and made some enquiries. Jet Press also do a similar system. They are definitely something that would solve the problem but the cost is prohibitive. For a large door the Sugatsune hinges would be about £350 each so while ideal the the cost is not really affordable. I am still looking. One Utuber built cupboards to the same design but on questioning him he admitted he had to chamfer the back of the apex of each angled door until it would clear the surrounding frame. Regards
Thanks for the video. Could you explain why Blum Tip-On or push can only be used with unsprung hinges? As far as I know Blum also sells a buffered version which they claim is intended for sprung hinges. Has you tested those by chance do you know what is the difference? Or is it just the same Tip-On with magnetic and rubber tips.
@Alastair_Freebird
2 жыл бұрын
Hi sorry I missed this comment first time around! If a sprung hinge is used with a push latch, it just means it will open as far as the latch travels and hold there until you get your fingers in and pull it open. Personally I think it’s a nicer effect for the door to swing freely open after the latch has released and given it that initial push. I’m not aware of the specific rubber tipped one you’re talking about but… come to think of it I can see some benefits to it because it wouldn’t need to be magnetic (the door will hold closed due to the hinge springs) and it will be a much quieter operation without all the clicking and hard contact.
Thanks for sharing. What hinge would you use if you had internal pull outs drawers is there a hinge to allow for 12 x 450mm drawer slides which would make the drawer 25mm shorter then carcass opening but will the hinges be protruding enough to affect drawers. Thanks Dave ,
@Alastair_Freebird
4 жыл бұрын
david osullivan I normally set the drawers back inside the carcase about 90mm to be well clear of the hinge arms, and make the drawers in their own sort of sub carcase within the main one, with fillers either side about 40mm to keep the drawer fronts well clear of the hinges as they open past them. I hope that makes sense. 12mm clearance either side will not be enough

when using pull out drawers all hinges of this kind are a pain as they limit the size of the drawer box. For inset doors use butt hinges and there is almost no restriction on the width of the drawer. They are also not the kind of hinges found on melamine covered chipboard furniture which is a plus quality-wise.
Very usefull Alastair thankyou. Would it be acceptable to use any of these hinges on 18mm mdf carcasses as opposed to ply?? Will the screws hold ok?
@Alastair_Freebird
Жыл бұрын
Hi Giles, way back we used to make our internal carcases from Medite 'premier' MDF and we used mounting plates with simple 17mm long 'hospa' screws (pointy self tapping screws - not the stubby euro screws that require a 5mm predrilled holes). Then we had a call back to a job where the mounting plates were pulling off and I decided the material was not strong enough. This was one of the reasons for switching to birch plywood carcases (prior to us having an edgebander or CNC). However now our standard internal carcases are made from melamine faced MDF, from Finsa's '12-Twenty' range. We use the euro screw type of mounting plate, and i am confident about the fixing. This particular range of Melamine faced MDF has a pretty good core. I still wouldn't use the hospa screwed plates in it though.

Hi A complete explanation of the correct use of concealed hinges The 170degree hinge is mainly used to obtain cero protuding of the door into the case from only 90degree of opening, used with rool out drawers. That is the reason why it only come in full overlay. Half or inset makes no sense saludos Gerardo
