It's the fact that the main character is 300 years old and can basically travel around the world with no restrictions yet has only went to Western Europe (only London and Paris) and the US?? Where were the people of color?? And you're in NYC one of the most mixed places in the world yet we only meet one person of color?? Weird af to me. Also Addie was very boring and underdeveloped. For her to be 300 years old she has the mindset of a teenager which is also very weird. In all I didnt even get halfway through the book causs it was very underwhelming.

I'm glad more people had issues with Addie, I felt alone for a moment with my opinion but it was a 3 star read for me and that was me feeling generous. I really wanted to love the book (since everyone hyped it up). I felt very conflicted by it because there were parts where it felt like a 4 star read and parts where I felt like I didn't even care if I finished the book. Addie never owned the repercussion of her decisions. She kept blaming the darkness for everything until the end (when he was perfectly clear from the start). She just never learned! She lived 300 years and never got any wiser and stayed stubborn for the sake of being stubborn. She was even willing to sacrifice an innocent soul because she couldn't accept the fact that the person she loved also made his own decision... I don't know... There are teenagers wiser than that (Anne Frank wink, wink). Too many thoughts... but definitely an unpopular opinion.

I promised not to read any more of her books anymore because they just give me such a horrible reading slump. I couldn't read for 6 months after trying to read a Darker Shade of Magic. in “the invisible life of addie larue”, addie talked so much about her love for humanity and how she can make a mark in this world that i felt more interested in the rare few characters she’s met (which you’re right, is weird for someone who’s managed to live for over three hundred years) than addie herself. and that interest in itself was spotty because reading throughout all this, i knew there was a lot of things missing in the exploration of how much societies were affected throughout the years addie lived and the grief and hope different people have had to live through in their lives. it just seemed like addie was so focused on herself that it became hard to empathize with her because it felt like such a narrow perspective. i think that despite this book touching on some darker themes that were very well-developed, it still skipped out on a more diverse range of characters and their different experiences throughout history

I don't think I've seen a single person who wasn't dissapointed by King of Crows and it's no different for me. Most people find the middle part drags on and nothing happens, but I actually liked this part the most. Throughout almost the entire book I thought it would be my new favourite in the series. And then the ending happened and everything was so rushed and full of plot conveniences and the author breaking her own rules, which is one of my least favourite things in a fantasy book because it instantly kills all the suspense. So yeah, I'm sad that I didn't like this more, but I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it!

I’m so glad to finally hear someone having a different take on Addie Larue. I was so excited to read it but the characters fell so flat to me. Addie and Henry were just so boring to me and at times felt very whiny. I loved the beginning when we got to learn about her making this deal and I loved learning more about her dynamic with Luc, but those scenes were so small in comparison to the rest of the book. It felt like I was just being dragged through it and waiting for the small moments when it picked up. The beginning and the end I enjoyed but I wish the rest had the same pacing and faster paced plot. I gave it a generous three stars and definitely agree with everything you said about it! I’ve wanted to read her other works but this was my first YA/adult work I read from her so now I’m not so sure if reading ADSOM or her other books is worth it.

I feel like I lost 10 years of my life because of the stress and anger that I felt in chain of iron because of that damned gracelet. Slight chain of iron spoilers ahead! I'm so conflicted at the ending, I love jordelia but I also want Matthew to be happy and I also love fairstairs (probably because I just want Matthew to be happy 🥺), and I felt so disconnected with James, it felt like that gracelet was clouding my connection with him, just like it clouded his mind. Idk how I'll survive till chain of thorns come out. Also Cordelia is absolute queen! 👑

The only book from your list I've read so far is This Is How You Lose The Time War. I read it last year in our book club, and I just - uuuugh I loved it so much!!!!! I'm not really a fan of a very poetic writing style usually, but I thought it really suited the story that was being told. Having a group to discuss and dissect it with also made me enjoy it more, I think - because, like Hannah said, it's pretty sparse in terms of literal descriptions; it leaves a lot to your own imagination. So getting to expand on what I was imagining was happening, and hearing what all of my friends thought too, really helped flesh that out for me. I think I got a more full reading experience through that than if I had just sat down and read it in one sitting. (Which you can do, because it's a very short book. Basically a novella.)
